Hello Evrik! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.

If you are a Wikipedian then you may notice some differences in policies and the style of our articles. These include:

Copyleft

edit

Hi. I've had to revert the listing for the Baden-Powell grave that you helpfully added to the Nyeri article because it is directly copied from Wikipedia without crediting your source (such as in your edit summary), a violation of both Wikivoyage's Copyleft policy and Wikipedia's Creative Commons license. Please recreate the listing, but with appropriate paraphrasing and summarizing, rather than verbatim copying. And you can leave out "are in Nyeri, Nyeri County, Kenya" from your description, because in the Nyeri article, a location in Nyeri is the default. Sorry for the inconvenience.

All the best,

Double redirects

edit

Hi, Evrik. You helpfully created a redirect from Père Lachaise Cemetery to Paris/20th arrondissement. When you link Paris/20th arrondissement in another article, you've posted a link that is a single redirect. If you instead link Père Lachaise Cemetery, you've posted a double redirect. If you'd rather not simply revert this edit, you could do this (please view in "edit" mode): Père Lachaise Cemetery. The reader doesn't see "Paris/20th arrondissement", but it redirects there directly when s/he clicks on the link. You could even make the redirect go directly to Paris/20th arrondissement#See. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:29, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, good job on the redirect, though I'd still use the direct link in other articles. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:44, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Père Lachaise Cemetery has its own entry in wikidata. Evrik (talk) 23:47, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure how that helps, but I'm not seeing a "redirected from" message when I click the link, so I think there may not be a double-redirect anymore. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:54, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
I have deleted the page Père Lachaise Cemetery, I do not think we can start having redirect pages for every attraction on on this site. --Traveler100 (talk) 05:25, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure I agree with the deletion. This is a major cemetery that takes up a lot of land and would be a normal search term, many people might not know which arrondissement it's in, and redirects are cheap. I would tend to support reinstating the redirect. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:55, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
rediects are not cheap. I have a bot running for the last few ours checking for redirects that have templates in them causing false with categories. Also I do not see the advantage of overloading the automatic suggestions as you type in a search term with the names of every attraction in the world. If you type Père Lachaise and enter in the search field it will suggest Paris/20th arrondissement as the first result. Added redirects for every large acreage attraction would soon get out of hand. --Traveler100 (talk) 07:21, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
I didn't understand that. What problem are the redirects causing? Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:34, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Maybe we should move this conversation to other place; but when I type in Pete into the search field I would like the automatic suggestions to be destinations like Peterborough and not be clogged with every building, park or cemetery that starts with those letters. Wikivoyage is a site with pages on destinations, it is not Wikipedia. For attractions you can type enter and get search results or go to Wikipedia to find where something is. The other issue are pages that are in categories used by bots to clean-up articles and by statics. Pages with tags in like this create false positives. --Traveler100 (talk) 07:51, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Traveler100: If someone on wikipedia reads an article, and sees a link for wikivoyage in the external links, this will increase the number of visitors to wikivoyage. The redirect causes no harm and sends people to the corresponding article. Check out [1] Evrik (talk) 14:27, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I just want to say I really hope my edits aren't annoying you too much, and I really want you to stay here and keep contributing, not leave. So having made a few edits, I will now back off for a while and give you some latitude to try stuff. And on one particular point: Allowing more links to sister sites like Wikipedia has been a topic of considerable controversy on Wikivoyage, but we've been nearing a consensus on a particular proposal on the Wikivoyage talk:External links page.

OK, enjoy editing and feel free to read the links you've been given at your leisure, but they're less important than the content you're adding. See you later.

Thanks and all the best,
