Hello, Ji-Elle! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. New users are also welcome to post any questions or concerns to the arrivals lounge. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. If you want to contribute with information about the place where you live, see Wikivoyage:Welcome, locals.

Thanks a lot for your edits to the Algeria article! As a point of style, this site recommends what is called "minimal use of images". If you click the link, you'll see that doesn't really mean almost no photos, but it definitely means not to crowd them together, and left-linking is usually avoided by custom and guideline.

However, if more content is added to the article, so that it becomes longer, it could eventually fit more images.

Thanks a lot, and don't worry about style points right now; just enjoy editing and let us know if we can be of any help in any way.

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:53, 4 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Ikan Kekek:. As my native language is French, I am not sure to understand everything. I am a long-time Wikipedia and Commons contributor (15 years), some practices here seem quite different and disturbing to me (no galleries, no left-linking, though this option is open). Well, I will try to take into account your point of view. But please listen also to this : pages on most of the 54 African countries are extremely poor here (Algeria seams relatively better off). So when the annual Wiki Loves Africa contest collects pictures, almost 17,000 in 2020 : [1], we try to have all projects benefit from it. Of course it would be more relevant to have nice pages in the first place, and add a few pictures afterwards. But in my experience new (good) pictures are also inspiring, some content is often added at that very moment. But OK, you are the boss here :-) -- Ji-Elle (talk) 12:29, 4 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
No, no-one is boss on a Wiki; we do things by consensus. I totally agree with you that most articles about Africa on this Wiki are quite inadequate, and we need many more articles about Africa. My suggestion is for you to please feel free to replace mediocre photos with better ones and add more images where there is some blank space on a page, and thank you! Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:49, 4 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:52, 4 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Merci @Ikan Kekek: ! -- Ji-Elle (talk) 04:32, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Videos edit

Hello again, and again, thank you for improving articles here!

A word about videos: I haven't checked French-language Wikivoyage's policy, but we do not allow them here. Please see Wikivoyage:Image policy#Other media. If you'd like to argue for a change to that policy, you should read through the existing Wikivoyage talk:Image policy#Proposal to allow video files thread and post your argument at the end of it, or at least referring to it if you would like to start a new thread at the end of the page. (Also, a very small thing: As a matter of style, we normally don't use periods at the end of image captions.)

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:36, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for telling me. It is really hard to contribute here. I was careful not to insert pictures on the left, but then many pages are quite empty with huge maps or infoboxes on the right, so you cannot do anything. About videos, I am afraid that my English is not good enough to explain that a few years ago there were no videos. Now we have many good ones [2] and I always carefully choose them for their educational quality.. As far as Africa is concerned, many African contributors leave WP, preferring Facebook, YouTube, and so on. This policy does not help. I had not come to Wikivoyage for a long time but seeing it now reminds me of the early days of Wikipedia... Not your fault of course. Ji-Elle (talk) 13:29, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
To clarify, videos are also not allowed on French Wikivoyage. I would be open to arguments for including video content if you feel like starting a conversation; I'm not sure it'd be helpful to continue the previous seven-year-old discussion whose participants have largely moved on from the project (present company excluded!), but skim-reading through it would certainly help. Nice job on adding all those photos.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:20, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I just discover this new message and not sure to understand everything. What do you mean ? Ji-Elle (talk) 13:29, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
No worries. Which bit don't you understand? --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:38, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
the previous seven-year-old discussion whose participants have largely moved on from the project (present company excluded!), but skim-reading through it would certainly help. ???? . What does that mean ? -- Ji-Elle (talk) 16:49, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Il est prêt à participer à la conversation si elle est ouverte par tes soins ( I would be open to arguments for including video content if you feel like starting a conversation). Anthere (talk)

(edit conflict)Sorry, I should have been clearer!
The discussion which user:Ikan Kekek said you should read through is seven years old. In my view, that is a long enough time to revisit the issue of videos in articles, because a lot of the people who participated in the older discussion have now left Wikivoyage. If you want to start a new discussion, it will help your argument if you quickly read (=skim read) the old discussion.
Does that make better sense? --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:58, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Anthere: En effet, sauf que c'était Ikan Kekek qui a assisté à la dernière discussion ; moi je n'en avais pas l'habitude à cette époque-là. Merci :-) ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 17:02, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
-- Ji-Elle (talk) 18:07, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
-- Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:36, 7 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I think also we should start writing in English again, or at least translate what's being written in French, for the benefit of others in this community. So I am also of a mind to open a new discussion, having read the previous one last night. It won't be today, because it's a bank holiday and beautiful sunny day, so if one of you posts before I get round to it, I'll support you; if not I hope to have your support.--ThunderingTyphoons!
