Welcome, Mvdz1998!
editHello, Mvdz1998! Welcome to Wikivoyage.
To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. New users are also welcome to post any questions or concerns to the arrivals lounge. If you want some practice editing, please do so on our graffiti wall. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. If you want to contribute with information about the place where you live, see Wikivoyage:Welcome, locals.
Thank you for contributing London on foot. How did you manage to develop such an extensive article so quickly? I went ahead and added a page banner with image. Are you planning to do much more work on this article? If so, I'll hold off on further major edits for the time being. Nelson Ricardo 2500 (talk) 13:55, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
Walks...
editDo you have waypoint files? For some walks having downaloable waypoints for them on a mobile device is now a thing :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:01, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
Hi, I've just added waypoint files for most of the walks, especially the long distance walks, which I've added from Google Maps. However, there are a couple of small issues: 1) For some of the shorter walks, although they do have waypoint files, I have them stored on an app called Viewranger, which I know works for iOS and Android devices, but I'm not fully sure if they'll be compatible on Windows devices. 2) If I were to try and transfer some of these walks into Google Maps, for example the Tower Bridge to Paddington walk, I'd be restricted in how many times I can edit a walk by Google, and so these walks wouldn't be as accurate as I've described on the page. Mvdz1998 EDIT: Because Google can't be linked here, it'll be easier for me to link the playlist where the videos are.
- Your work is most appreciated, but as noted below, Google can't be linked on this site. Please have a look at Wikivoyage:Map and the links at the bottom of that article, such as Wikivoyage:How to use dynamic maps. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:36, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for letting me know. Mvdz1998
- Sure, but YouTube also can't be linked (again, you could argue for an exception on the article's talk page), and we have no external links sections in articles (but you could put those on the article's talk page). Please read Wikivoyage:External links. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:34, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
Another suggestions for London Walks...
editYou don't happen to know someone that's done "The Knowledge" do you? Whilst those are essentialy vehicle routes, some of them might be adapted into short walks? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:06, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
ShakespeareFan00 If I have to be honest, I've never heard of it before you mentioned it. I've just looked it up, and it does look pretty good. Mvdz1998
- w:Taxis_of_the_United_Kingdom#The_Knowledge for context. - The official book is 300 routes or so. Some suggestions in terms of London Walks to consider (that might not necessarily also be Knowledge Routes.)
- Albert Hall to The Electric Ballroom.
- Parliament Square to The Law Courts.
- Stratford to the Globe Theatre.
- National Theatre to The Pit.
- Madame Tussaud's to London Zoo.
- V&A to British Museum.
- Camden to Covent Garden Plazza.
- Cenntential Park to Edgware Station.
- Lords to The Oval.
- Bouncing off this list, I've already semi covered some of these as per below:
- I've integrated the route from the V&A to the British Museum as part of The V&A museum to the National Maritime Museum in the Long walks section, specifically walk 6.
- Lords to The Oval. - The route I've created starts from Wembley Stadium before joining the route you mentioned at Lord's, and then it continues from The Oval to the Olympic Stadium via London Bridge and the Hertford Union Canal, which forms walk 9 in the Long walks section.
- And just to clarify, when you say Stratford, do you mean the High Street, Olympic Park or Shopping Centre? Aside from that, I'll definitely consider the other routes as well, maybe even combine some of them together! Mvdz1998
If you wanted to be really good, I suggest a format per walking route along the lines of:-
- General location (Such as transport hubs at each end.)
- The route. (Note: Points of interest for the traveller, such as attractions, venues, shops etc.. but defer things like contact details to destination articles.)
- Points of interest near either end.
- With the last two points, I semi do this already for some of the walks (E.g. Paddington station to Camden Market via Little Venice), but I definitely could expand this to more walking routes. Mvdz1998
You might also find :- https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/111942/response/275411/attach/3/Knowledge%20Book2008.pdf?cookie_passthrough=1 useful in terms of matching London attractions and venues to nearby stations. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:39, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
- In terms of Stratfors I meant either the Intrernational Station, or the Bus Station. Stratford to the South Bank (via The Pit and Globe seems feasible.)
- Suggestion, Split the longer walks into sections based on tube stations. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:34, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
Metroland
edit- I would suggest taking another look at the Little Chalfont, Sarrat, Watford section of this as comparing to OpenStreetMap the directions did not seem that clear. Portions around Chenies are not necessarily the route I'd use, and the main Amersham/Chalfont main road here isn't nice to walk along.
- On a related note, I would have susggested Watford->Uxbridge as the Canal towpath, and Ebury Way to Btachworth Lock, and then London Road-> Rickmansworth Road , to rejoin your route around Northwood. (I've done a walk through the Back streets of West Watford and it was nothing special, unless the recent redevelopment of the print works site is something notable.). A more rural alterantive from Cassiobury is to take the Canal Towpath all the way to Denham Marina (nr Uxbridge), where you do a right, and left up the steps and follow the footpath round via Bridge back over the Canal, Crossing Sanderson Road, follow the pavement around until you take a left into the High Street, and resume the existing route.
Not technically London, but I'm looking into which Metroland Walks I'd recomend... ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:34, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
What not to link to on this site
editHi, Mvdz1998, and thanks a lot for starting and putting so much content in the article on London walks! Unfortunately, Google is one of the sites that can't be linked here, per this site's what not to link to guidelines. Please have a look at those, and feel free to argue for exceptions on Talk:London on foot or for a change in policies at Wikivoyage talk:External links, but in the meantime, the Google links have to be deleted. Sorry about that.
All the best,
Date and time formats for England
editHi Mbdz1998, and thanks for your work on London on foot. However, please note we use the 12 hour format for articles about the UK, with the exception of Scotland. I noticed you changed it from 12 to 24 here, which I've switched back to 12. If you want to make a proposal to change it, make it on Talk:England or Talk:United Kingdom, although there have been long discussions on this, and it was agreed to use 12 for England and Wales, and 24 for Scotland. And also, use 12 even if it was displayed in 24. Most Australian timetables use 24 similar to London's public transport, but to keep consistency, we have chosen to stick to one. Thanks!
