Hello Osenibabalola0! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.

If you are a Wikipedian then you may notice some differences in policies and the style of our articles. These include:

It may also be very useful for you to check out Wikivoyage:Welcome, Wikipedians. If you need help, take a look at Wikivoyage:Help, or else post a message in the travellers' pub or on my talk page. Thanks for contributing!

Also, please read Wikivoyage:Copyleft and Wikivoyage:Small city article template.

Search results appear to show that your stub article on Oke Ila Orangun is plagiarized from another site. Can you refute that? If not, we will have to delete the article.

Thanks,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:45, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Ikan Kekek for calling my attention. I believe, according to my understanding, that the article could be rightly said to be plagiarized as you tagged, based on reason that i did not accord proper attribution to the source of the information. But its not all my fault as I learnt that Wikivoyage style does not accommodate citations and references section, otherwise, I could have include the source as appropriate. You may please offer suggestions for improvement to avoid possible deletion. Thanks Osenibabalola0 (talk) 16:55, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Osenibabalola0, you cannot copy text from another site, other than Wikipedia. You cannot copy it and provide a citation either. If you are using information from another website, you mustvre-write it in your own words.
You can use text from Wikipedia if you put this tag {{Wikipedia}} on the article's talk page. This gives appropriate credit to Wikipedia. But be sure that the text that you are copying from Wikipedia is appropriate for a travel guide. Sometimes people with good intentions copy large blocks of text that are appropriate for an encyclopedia (a long history of thebplace), but provide too much information for a travel guide.
I hope this helps you. I will watch your talk page and try to answer your questions. Administrators are not paid staff, and we are not always able to respond quickly. Thank you for your contributions to Wikivoyage. Ground Zero (talk) 12:35, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Ground Zero for your concern and response. Together with SHB2000, you both have certainly helped me regarding this and have enlightened me more. I really appreciate your interest.
May I ask here again that does re-writing in ones word (as you mentioned above), information from external website other than Wikipedia, necessarily entails total changing of words and entire structure of the text from how it is presented in the source? If it requires total modification, then does that negate the need to cite the source? And if doesn't negate the citation, what referencing style could then be used in such case. Thanks Osenibabalola0 (talk) 14:55, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
There is no magic formula for re-writing something. Information is not subject to copyright. The history of a town is its history, and anyone can write about that. But when you use someone else's words, then you are violating their copyright. As long as you change some words, andvthe order of words, you should be okay. We usually don't cite sources, unless there is an authority we want to mention, e.g., "UNESCO has designated this town as a World Heritage Site". But we don't cite other travel guides as authorities, because we are writing our own travel guide here. Ground Zero (talk) 15:12, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
My practice is that whenever I get information from another site (such as by summarizing a much longer passage), I say where in an edit summary that I write in the "Summary" box below my edit screen. That's my citation, and I would recommend following that practice. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:26, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Ground Zero and Ikan Kekek for your insightful responses. You've really resolved my concerns. I think I now have a more better perspective, than I had before this, about article's copyright issue. You both are most appreciated. Osenibabalola0 (talk) 15:55, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

A new "expedition" has been created to support the fantastic work of the Nigerian team. Please see Wikivoyage:Nigeria Expedition. Ground Zero (talk) 02:26, 20 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

The opening of the Nigeria café edit

Dear Osenibabalola0, we are exited to open our new Nigeria Café, open to all. It is a place for the users of the Wikivoyage:Nigeria Expedition users to collaborate, ask for help, make announcements, make initiatives and most importantly celebrate article related celebrations. It is also a place for you to ask general questions, and an experienced user or an admin will be sure to answer the question and possibly teach more on how Wikivoyage works.

This is also meant to be on top of the Wikivoyage:Nigeria Expedition, which is also meant to help us improve our Nigerian destinations. If you haven't already joined, feel free to join, and it is never too late.

So be sure to check out Wikivoyage:Nigeria café

Thanks! SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 14:54, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

That's pretty cool! It's indeed a nice initiative that should foster our collaboration. Osenibabalola0 (talk) 06:04, 30 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
