Stolen page

Hi Andrew, first I hope you had a nice new years eve and are didn't a sip too much as I ;-) I will be very busy in the next months and therefore I have withdrawn my docent status for Berlin. Prosit Neujahr! It is a violation of the CC-by-SA 1.0 license for two reasons. One, they haven't fulfilled the ShareAlike clause which forces them to relicense the work under the same license. Secondly, they haven't attributed any of the authors, though the MediaWiki software forced a 'This content was taken from (http://www.en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/pagename)'. Fairfiled (Ohio) - "Get Out" Section"

Hi Sapphire I was editing the Fairfield (Ohio) page and found that in the "Getting Out" section, there was the hyperlink to MiddleTown, Ohio. Any specific reason for adding this city in the Fairfield page?

That section serves as a place to suggest alternate destinations for travelers to visit. If you look at the Cincinnati guide that shows a good example "Get out" section. You may also want to look at Project:Small city article template. Also, I've restored some of the information you deleted, because it contained a lot of information we use for geographical mapping within Wikivoyage. -- (WT-en) Andrew H. Myanmar

So does not believing in the "NPOV" policy is one thing mean Wikivoyage believes in the WMBPOV policy: The White Man's Burden Point of View policy? The site set the goal of being traveler oriented. I am following that policy. Americans who support cultural imperialism are not the only people who travel in the world. Being as traveler-oriented as possible means articles should be useful to as many travelers as possible, and this includes people from Asia, Africa, and Latin America who don't have an axe to grind against countries on the hit list of the Bush administration. -- Akhilesh M.

Iraq, Security

The main agency I'm familiar with having used them twice is a firm called GENRIC based near london, http://www.genric.co.uk is their website I believe. Taipei101 has many entrances. So you can enter from each directions. If you take a shuttle bus from MRT city hall station, you will reach west side. I think the east side entrance is the biggest. Street Signs in Asia

You were interested in English street signs in Asia, so thought you might like to check out these images. They are not very exciting, but will give you a better idea of the street sign scene in Asia than mere descriptions. Minnan phrasebook

Climate data

Found a nice tool and data that we can use to source values for Template:ClimateCelsius. Dive-GIS provides a free (MS windows) tool where one can click on a map and get the corresponding climate data. I have checked that data against SAWS data and temperatures correspond nicely, rainfall figures are a lot higher so I'll be ignoring those for South Africa as I don't know if it is SAWS or this data that is suspect. The data originally comes from the US Energy and Environment Directorate and as far as I can tell it license free. --(WT-en) NJR_ZA 07:21, 20 February 2007 (EST)

I did a little bit of checking on that this morning and I suspect the data is actually a result of several different nations (including those that copyright government materials) coming together and providing various data about various topics, which may have been used compiled then distributed. I don't have any conclusive proof that the data is copyrighted, but be careful... As a preventive measure I might stagger the data. As an example, if the data says that during the month of April the mean temperature in Cape Town is 69 degress Fahrenheit, change it to say 69.2 or something. -- (WT-en) Sapphire 20:31, 20 February 2007 (EST)

Bogus copyvio claims

It's not bogus. I'm restoring the copyvio banner and vfd'ing it at Shared. The person who uploaded it to Commons is not a trustworthy source of information. Look at his log book on en:. Most of his image uploads were deleted for being copyvios. He claimed the images were either CC-by-SA 1.0 or public domain, which was normally wrong. True, that doesn't make him wrong every time, but I'm more inclined to believe the woman who claims to have taken the photo and stamped a all rights reserved on it. -- (WT-en) Sapphire • (Talk) • 14:28, 2 March 2007 (EST)

Maybe we should hire a private investigator, just to be sure... Seriously though, I think it's going too far. First of all, this photo was uploaded to Commons in Dec 2005, but only in May 2006 to the site you linked to, so it couldn't have been appropriated from that other site. And even if this woman is the author, she may have agreed to release it into the public domain in a private e-mail or even a conversation -- this we can never find out by googling.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but if we're discussing probability, then if this image has managed to stay intact for so long in the Commons, which are full of copyright Nazis, then it's fairly probable that there was nothing to pick on. Also, due to this DMCA thing you have in the US, it's not a legal problem too until someone complains. That's why I think it is wrong to deprive a few articles of a great photo just because there is a remote possibility of licence problems.

Warsaw DotM discussion follow-up

I didn't want to be confrontational with the revert -- the thing I was missing the most was the graphics. My only goal is to make the article better and I want to do it through consensus, not controversies or conflicts. In particular, I don't want to undo your work, because you are a valuable contributor to the article.

Also, as you have a broader perspective by looking on the whole project, it's likely you have a point this time too :) Still, I think some deletions should be discussed, but such discussion could be postponed without harm as long as there's more important work to do.

Here's what I think we need to do to focus on what's important:

1. You remove all the information you deem useless in the article, but put it back on some temporary page (say Talk:Warsaw/Removed so it is not gone forever but convieniently stored somewhere for future consideration.

2. We (I) work on the resulting compacted article and improve it to make it Good™.

3. When everything's tip-top and there is no more important work to do, we can optionally go back to what was removed and see if it's still relevant.

Tell me what you think about this.

Sounds like a good idea. Before we do a lot of the rewrite I think we should start a page (preferably Talk:Warsaw/Collaboration) and get ideas/suggestions/comments/criticisms about how the article can be improved and how to go about this. Also, I don't want to merge the districts, at this time, because I think we should focus on how to best improve the articles (districts including). Then, once our guides have been improved, discuss the possibility of merging districts. By the way, I think we should use "Russian market" as the "main name", because for whatever reason it's more well known amongst English speakers than the more official name. As for the "Russian Market", it seems you are right and this name is prevalent [11]. I changed it back, sorry for the confusion. The problem I have with it is that there are hardly any Russians there nowadays -- most of the sellers are Vietnamese. But it's really not that important anyway. Add this template: {{FromWorld66|continent/country/state/city|~~~~}} to the bottom of the page. Where "continent/country/state/city" is type in the part of the url from World66 that you want to use. So if I were to use something from World66's Cincinnati guide I would type: {{FromWorld66|northamerica/unitedstates/ohio/cincinnati|~~~~}}. There is a disclaimer I need to add. Don't use any images. Apparently W66 uses a script to search for and use any images it finds, which means some, if not all images are copyrighted and may or may not be licensed under CC-by-SA 1.0. Also, you'll need to be careful about any text you take because W66 used to be licensed under GNU FDL, but later switched to CC-by-SA 1.0. black list

Mexbound was placed next text regarding purchasing online mexico insurance. It was taken off and not been replaced. However you decided to blacklist it as spam. It is a legitimate website that sell Mexico insurance. Which is just like other sites on here that have a hotel or a vacation rental in mexico. The section was driving and the information provided by me was regarding driving in mexico rules and ways to purchase mexico insurance. I dont see why it was needed to be added to a spam list. I understand if you want to take it off, however to blacklist a sight that is not a porn sight is bad judgement. You should always contact that member first before you just blacklist them.. Also cancunmexicoinsider is also a website providing information regarding hotels maps in cancun. Just like www.cancuninfo.com does which is currently on the cancun page. this site has been removed several times, however it is not in the spam list. Please remove these sites from the spamlist. They will not be palced back on wikivoyage.com, however being in the spamlist is not good for the search engines, and we all have businesses we need to run. Please in the future contact me first before just blacklisting a business. I supply tons of info both to wikipedia and wikivoyage. that will increase tourist information in mexico.

There's simply never been any discussion about a "read" section. Past discussions have shown a strong preference that we don't like to promote other travel guides, unless they cater to something that falls outside of Wikivoyage's scope. As of now, no template makes use of a "read" section.

Cincinnati

Nope, sorry, never been there. I've looked over the guide and it mentions the few things I've heard about (theme parks, concert venues). My parents have a few friends down there and visit them every month or so. They're out of town this weekend, but I'll ask for their input when they get back. You're probably thinking of "Jungle Jim's", which incidently I recently removed from the Cincinnati guide, since it's not that famous and it's actually in Fairfield (Ohio), which is about 30 miles from Cincinnati. Trust me

I came to know about the GFDL/CCSA business when I copied a large piece of text from wp (thinking that it was perfectly legal) to Shimla. Ryan put a copyvio notice and explained to me about the whole stuff, it is still there in my talk archives. Anyway, since all of you don't trust me (and judging by your statements never will), I'll probably quit wikivoyage after setting up the hi:wt and giving it a solid base.

It's no good contributing to a project if others don't forgive you for past mistakes. You people still treat me as if I'm a boy who likes to copy-vio stuff and nuke images. (except for Ravi, Tim and Windhorse, that is).

I think you misread my comments. I've forgiven the transgression because if we don't then we actually do more harm than good. The reason I'm able to move on is because generally you've been active in and helpful in a lot of fields.

I probably would support the nomination, but the one thing I was most worried about (the last question) was your response to a negative nomination. I.e. if it didn't go the way you wanted to were you going to quit? I've been frustrated about the way some things have gone, but I've never let myself get so frustrated over something to the point where I quit.

When people do that it actually kind of brings more distrust against their name. A certain person, who used to work on Wikivoyage gave up over several times over pretty stupid stuff (I won't go into details so to keep his name unknown). Anyhow, he came back several times and would do some things, but his stature went down because he'd quit over ridiculous indifferences he had. Now, he's finally left (presumably for good). The problem I have with his quitting, especially the way he went out was that he all he did was criticize and call people names.

I guess it comes down to this - I don't want you to quit because of a failed nomination. I'll bring up the forgiveandforget philosophy on the nominations page(though not at this moment. Time for sleep). It's likely you could become an administrator one day, even if it's not in two weeks from now. Well, it's best done on a temperate spring day or a breezy (not windy) summer day. I prefer sitting and if you pick one out of the bunch that's the best way to watch.

The thing that I realized is pigeons, though they're birds, hate to fly. Watch a kid chase a pigeon around and the pigeon won't take flight immediately, which seems contrary to bird nature. Robins will take off as soon as it detects a potential predator, while the pigeon tries, at first, to out run the threat, then when it realizes it's claws weren't made for running it will take flight. Sapphire, I refactored Template:ClimateCelsius into Template:Climate and modified it some. Feel free to examine it and adopt any parts of it that you like into Template:ClimateCelsius and or Template:ClimateFahrenheit. I did the refactoring to make it easier to read, understand and work with the script and I did it as a separate template because I didn't want to tamper with your work. I'm learning this stuff as I work on it.

• Wuhan page now shows Template:Climate used with a short description of the climate at the bottom of the info box (inserted via optional parameter 'description').

Spam blacklist update

Hey - it looks like you removed a pattern from the blacklist that has been useful in blocking spam before [14]. That particular pattern is also used in a few of the language files, so there has been some discussion about removing it temporarily while language files are updated. I really appreciate your invitation, but, you know, at the moment I really enjoy editing at WT and hope my efforts can help some traveler, but perhaps part of the fun is that I don't feel any responsibility. Obviously, becoming a volunteer admin is not like accepting a high pressured job at Microsoft, but somehow it changes the atmosphere. Furthermore, later in the year I'm going to be in some very remote regions for several months where there are few places with electricity, let alone internet connections. Yes, I did take the incriminated photo and placed it on Polish Wiki under the PD license. It was than re-upploaded by a co-Wikipedian to the WikiCommons with the same license. Don't know the legal stuff so have no idea if any rule was broken by placing it on that site the way they did it. I personally do not care much unless they claim it is their picture.

I wasn't able to email you, as it appears that you have not enabled the email feature on any of the versions I'm registered on. But one thing that is really grating on my nerves is that the direct left toolbox links to wikipedia, dmoz, wikihow, etc. are not working (hence the weird collection of red links at the bottom of ru:Заглавная страница. I have a hunch that being the technical wizard you are, you know how to go about fixing that.

I just remembered that I forgot to answer your question about working as a State Dept Courier. I didn't ever get to meet any of the couriers, so I can't tell you much anything specific to the position, but I do know a fair amount about the general perks of overseas State Dept work. Overseas employees get a good amount of time per year for their vacation and get their vacation travel expenses paid for(!), because it is intended for going home and curing yourself of America-sickness. But a lot of the State employees use the $equivalent of a flight home to take really nice vacations in the opposite direction. One friend of mine in Georgia spent 2-3 weeks in Vanuatu, without having to go into his own savings! And there are a lot of excellent benefits for health care and pensions as well, although we're both still too young to care too much about those things I suppose ;) --(WT-en) Peter ^Talk 01:46, 30 July 2007 (EDT)

Spring Grove Cemetery

Translation attribution template

One thing I noticed, though, is that it has the IsIn-style problem of requiring underscores for spaces, special symbols to represent parentheses, etc in the link to the original article. Printed travel guides

Hello Andrew, I hope you have successfully installed yourself in Warsaw. Just wanted to ask you one question concerning policies. I couldn't find anywhere any guideline towards mentioning other existing books or even travel guides that describe the same region as the one of the article. I think it's generally helpful if you can go to library or bookshop and ask precisely for the book concerning the very region you are planning to travel to, however I am afraid it can counter goals of Wiktravel. The reason for my question is that on pl:Wikivoyage we have a user of large contribution that keeps adding list of books to country and region articles and he uses to insert additional section ==Preparation== for such purpose (which is not in the article template). Most, if not all, Wikivoyage versions have decided against including such information. However, that's not to say it can't be ever be useful. See Chernobyl#Read. I include this book because I found it fascinating and offered insight into Chernobyl that can't really be found elsewhere. Occasionally, it can be appropriate to include information about some books, but I think it's inappropriate to tell someone to read the Lonely Planet guide to Polska, especially when that book is probably out-of-date.

The <see>, <do>, <eat>, <drink>, <sleep>, and <listing> tags are still very much encouraged. Take a look at Project:Listings. Kind of peculiar that it's not mentioned in the Project:Attraction listings, but I guess that's just waiting to be updated. Updated. Correct if necessary. As you might have guessed I asked about the tag for I was planning to translate into pl the relevant section of Manual of style. And I wonder whether it is possible to translate the "parameter" part of the tag into pl, i.e. to have the tag with the same output but composed from words (eg. see, address, etc.) in local language. This would much simplify its usage for non-Eng speaking contributors. However I am doubtful, as local versions of WT use the tag in English. Any idea who could answer this question? Ok, so there are two responses that I have heard. 1. It's possible to translate the parameters and it's kosher. 2. It's possible to translate the parameters, but we shouldn't because it makes it difficult for some people to "parse" information from. Being a fairly non-technical person, I don't understand much about parsing. The person who has the only (?) and biggest concerns about translating the listings is (WT-en) Jpatokal. Personally, I understand why languages like Polish, Russian, Czech, or Georgian should be allowed to translate the listings, however, I think the parsing issue mainly stems from easing potential problems for projects like Wikivoyage Press. I was asked a similar question about translating the listings to Russian and my own opinion is that translations should be allowed to happen, because not everyone understands English and translating will help those casual users to other language versions. For the German language version, we gave up on the idea, which wasn't really a hindrance since the majority of Germans can understand a fair amount of English. Burma (Myanmar) Warning

Sapphire, thanks for making the warning succinct. Just a quick note to explain my use of Burma/Rangoon rather than Myanmar/Yangon in violation of the wikivoyage preference. At a time like this, I think it is important to make an exception to the policy in support of the NLD's (National League of Democracy, the Burmese party headed by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi) position on naming. If the protests peter out and the warning disappears, so will Burma. If the protests succeed and the military government disappears, then we'll see what happens. Of course, I've scrupulously included Myanmar/Yangon as alternative names in the warning to avoid all confusion! (Note: The protests continue to be peaceful, it is the government that is being violent. This is the reason I am studying International Relations. I hate repressive governments with every fiber of my being (the American in me demands this). If I could, I'd be in Burma alongside the monks. I wanted to be in the Ukraine for its Orange Revolution, which has produced mixed results.

Unfortunately, I wasn't sure what to do with regards Burma/Myanmar. I didn't even know "Myanmar" existed. I have always known the country as Burma and only learned about "Myanmar" when I got redirected to "Myanmar" on Wikivoyage. Feel free to substitute the name, if you wish. Also, I know the reports are still of protesters are being peaceful, but the protests now have been threatened with violence, hence the warning about violence and danger. Hopefully, no one will give up the fight and democratic countries will fight for Burma, but I won't hold my breath. If the EU will let Darfur go essentially without challenge, then I don't have much hope for the EU standing up for Burma. Maybe I am unfairly knocking the EU, but I am impressed that President Bush (a President I have rarely agreed with on matters of international relations) declared Darfur "genocide", which is something no other nation has done, if I recall correctly, and he came up with new sanctions against the junta fairly quickly. -- (WT-en) Sapphire • (Talk) • 19:12, 27 September 2007 (EDT)

I my opinion of soccer was quite similar... a sport for people who were too "sissy" to make it in other sports, however, the 2004 Euro Cup changed my mind about the soccer. Football might be the same way for you. It really is quite fascinating and takes a lot more skill than Ms. Beckwith seems to understand. It's about finding the weakness of your opponents and taking advantage of those weaknesses. It could be compared to war because of the intense training and strategic thinking that's involved. Warsaw

Are you staying in Warsaw permanently, or will you get back to Ohio after a bit. And why've you removed the tequila section on your page, caught the culprit?

The current plan is Warsaw indefinitely, or until time and finances permit. Warsaw is a lovely city (if you know where to look) with women who look as if they are angels. My roommates, especially. Hopefully, they'll read that. ;) Anyhow, I hope to go back to Cincinnati a couple of times, but it's expensive. Cincinnati is home, though. I lucked out with having such a great hometown, even though many people fail so see its treasures. If you're ever in Cincinnati and I'm back home, you'll have to let me know, especially if you're studying in Columbus, but that's probably a while off, right? ;)

Template:ClimateCelsius

I noticed you reverted a small change I made to this template recently. Not sure if that was intentional, if it was, please let me know if my change caused a problem, if not I would like to add it back. Cape Town is one example why I would like to have the clear:right included in the css. I added a comment on Template talk:ClimateFahrenheit#Reverted about this, but Template:If should no longer be used and went through the VFD process. I understand why it was undeleted, but we really should be using the Mediawiki parser functions instead. Can you point me to whatever was broken by #if, and I'll try to fix it?
