Hi

Create Account rejected

My choice of username "Loby" was rejected because 'there is already a user with that name'. I went to the User list page and put in "Lobx" in group '(all)' to search from. The first given is "Loby52". Can you think of a reason why this got rejected? 49.178.200.93 04:49, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No, I can't think of a reason. There is no User:Loby on this wiki. Are you sure you tried to register that username on Wikivoyage, not another wiki? Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:54, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Am about to try again in case I got the wrong one. Will let you know. 49.178.200.93 04:58, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is Wikivoyage. I went to top right of this page for 'Create account'. Got "Username entered already in use. Please choose a different name." from the first field before going to Password. A 'bug' somewhere? 49.178.200.93 05:03, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Usernames are checked against all SUL-connected wikis (e.g., Wikipedia), not just this one. Special:CentralAuth/Loby says there is a User:Loby at the Greek Wikipedia. You could create an account (i.e., with a different username) and file a request at m:USURP to change your username to Loby. This process would take at least 30 days, and they might not agree to it, but it is possible that they would approve the change. WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:17, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. Will give that a go. Will invent an alternative in case they say no. 49.178.200.93 05:23, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do I edit the 'Related Pages'

How do I get to the links at the bottom of the Articles Adelaide/Belair National Park and Adelaide/City and North Adelaide. I want to downsize "mountains". Catterns (talk) 09:26, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Catterns: It looks like you can override the related pages with syntax like {{#related:Desired Article Name}}. More information here: mw:Reading/Web/Projects/Related pages. I've never tried this before, so please let me know if it works. —Granger (talk · contribs) 17:09, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by "downsize"? WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:57, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not mountains but hills Catterns (talk) 20:56, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Catterns, what is "not mountains but hills"?
When I look at one of the articles, I get nine boxes containing links and Wikidata descriptions for the following articles:
Are you hoping to change the third one to say "Blue Hills National Park"? The word mountains does not appear anywhere else in the entire list of related articles. WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:28, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The 2nd one: Adelaide Hills: mountain range. The use of the plural is because it occurs more than once. Catterns (talk) 03:18, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. You would need to make that edit at Wikidata, not here. The link is d:Q353992, and you want to edit the English-language "Description" in the first section of the page. These descriptions are shared across all the projects, so whatever you write needs to work for everyone. WhatamIdoing (talk) 06:14, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have made no edits to these pages but the Related Pages portion has gone from my view. I think this is the best solution as the suggestions were dubious (tenuous) at best. I looked at those mw:.. pages, they give install instructions but not removal. I was looking through the History, found no mention of when they were added and then they disappeared! I would prefer them to be disappeared permanently. Catterns (talk) 21:06, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And now they are back! They really are not useful. They just demonstrate the failings of an AI generated list. Adelaide/City and North Adelaide seems to be 'related' to Moree (NSW). Really? Please get rid of AI generated Related pages. I will do some minor edits to these eg The Ghan does not only travel between Port Augusta & Adelaide. Catterns (talk) 21:42, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, the automatically generated ones are not very good. Probably another case of a tool that was designed for Wikipedia being applied to Wikivoyage regardless of whether it makes sense. Our editor-curated "Go next" sections tend to be more useful. Please feel free to override the related pages with more relevant articles in the way I suggested. —Granger (talk · contribs) 22:27, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
At first reading of mw:... it seems that I could put in 3 entries, the 'Related' seems to put 9 entries out. There are various warnings about not modifying the database. I do not yet understand where the database is or where I put the . I think I am in need of more assistance. Catterns (talk) 22:44, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
RelatedArticles was developed originally for Wikipedia on the mobile site, but it is here because we asked for it.
All it does is pre-load search results using the morelike:Article_title feature, for whatever the page title is. WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:40, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Or you could just use {{related}} which also overrides the AI generated list. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 22:47, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Have put that at the end if Adelaide Hills. As the Related list goes and reappears I will wait a while to see if it is permanent. Catterns (talk) 22:57, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is permanent – I put several of these at the bottom of Mungo National Park back in 2021 and they still remain 2 years on. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 23:03, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good thankyou Catterns (talk) 23:06, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to look at Mungo again. They are back! Catterns (talk) 23:44, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake I understand Catterns (talk) 23:45, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Used {{related}} but it gave me an incomplete box. Trying related followed by "|". Seems to be working better (so far) Catterns (talk) 00:08, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
