The national parks expedition is a Wikivoyage expedition to improve Wikivoyage's coverage of national parks worldwide. Although the name of the park says "National Parks Expedition", other types of parks such as state parks, provincial parks, marine parks, wildlife reserves, conservation areas, or anything that's a park article is well within the scope of the expedition.
Article stats
editRationale
editOutside the US, some smaller countries in Europe, New Zealand and only recently Canada, most countries don't have park articles for even important parks, including those that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There are many instances of a country's most important parks not having an article, or one that is plain stubby outline that provides little to no information to the traveller. Unlike the issue with our coverage when it comes to city articles, a case of "English speaking, and developed or not", park articles are often given less overall attention outside North America and Oceania.
What more, our coverage of parks hasn't improved much either. This shows that there were only 47 guide parks in 2013, the early days of Wikivoyage, while there were 386 guide cities. Compare that to 2021, where we had 624 guide cities, almost double the amount, while yet only 71 guide parks, which is only 24 more. Even getting just 100 guide parks would be a massive milestone for the English Wikivoyage. The same goes with total park articles; 1,223 in 2013 and 1,451 in 2021.
The hopes of this expedition is getting good coverage of national parks worldwide, but also state/provincial parks as well as conservation areas, wildlife reserves or any park article.
When this expedition started in December 2021, the number of total park articles sat at 1,451. Less than 3 years later in March 2024, the number sits at 1,711. The number of new park articles created in this timeframe is greater than that between the creation of Wikivoyage and this expedition's founding.
Goals
edit- To have an article for all major national parks in every country on every corner of the globe and ensure they are good outline or usable articles.
- To improve the stubby outline parks and try to get most national parks to usable or higher.
- Make all UNESCO World Heritage Parks a high-quality usable article (similar to Wikipedia's B class) or a guide article.
