Some of the terminology used here

edit

I apologise in advance if I'm being thick, but there are a couple of lines in this page that are unclear in their meaning to me. I am admittedly not the sharpest when it comes to wiki-terms, but I have been on WV for three years so I'd worry that less-experienced users may be put off contributing to this project when they read this page.

Particularly, what do these phrases mean?

  • "either all or nothing" - the explanation that comes up when you mouse over the 'check' heading on the Articles needing a little work to get to usable table (which by the way is a lovely little table that will be very helpful)
  • Under the Articles needed heading - "to complete regions".

I realise, Traveler100, that you've launched this project single-handedly and created this page from scratch, and you've done a wonderful job in doing so. These queries are in no way critical, just a bit confused! --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 19:15, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yes difficult to come up with a short phrase to explain a complex topic.
  • "either all or nothing" - this column are article that need to be checked. The green box are outline city articles that have enough listings to be technically a usable status article; need checking however as the content of the listing may not be complete or the article does not have a good "get in" section. The red box are articles that have no listing templates at all; need checking to see what can be added or even delete/merge the article or it could be that it has enough information but not using the template listing syntax.
  • "to complete regions" - towns that are important enough to have an article before the region could be considered for usable status.

Please feel free to suggest better descriptions and text, it is always difficult to know what is not clear to others when you have been working on something for some time.--Traveler100 (talk) 19:51, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, that's much clearer now. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 10:07, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Updating the table

edit

My paltry contributions to the project so far consist of adding sleep listings for Amble and Axminster. I'll be continuing, probably rather slowly, down the list of articles needing sleep listings in that order. I don't know how to update the table, so for now I'll leave a record of my activities here.

Sorry that I'm not as active in the project as I ought to be. I haven't got much time and I'm quite a slow editor. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 20:46, 11 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

The numbers in the table have to be sdone semi-manually. On other project I have done it every couple of weeks (I will do it this weekend at some point). However clicking to get the list is updated automatically, although there is sometime a little time delay after a new edit. --Traveler100 (talk) 22:11, 11 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you :) Yeah, I've noticed the list updating itself, that's good. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:06, 12 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wanted article(s)

edit

I would suggest creating an article on Intercity buses in Britain (or in that case maybe Intercity Coaches in Britain) similar to the article on Intercity buses in Germany as I gather the phenomenon has existed there for quite a while and is a way to get around for many people - locals and visitors alike. Sleepy articles

edit

Currently there are 207 English articles that do not have an accommodation listing (see has no sleep in table on project page). Many are good sized towns so need to check on sites like Google Maps and Tripadvisor as well as local tourist websites to get some suggestions. There are also number of small locations with only one attraction that could maybe merged into a neighbouring town. Anyone willing to help? --Traveler100 (talk) 07:03, 19 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

That is what I have been doing for the project so far. Progress has been (very) slow because I'm currently doing a lot of travelling myself and am also busy with work. But you can rely on me to continue helping, at least in a limited capacity. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:57, 19 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Merging away Sherwood Forest

edit

I am not quite sure this is a good idea. I don't know how big the forest is, nor exactly where it is, but surely it is a household name all over the world thanks to the Robin Hood stories, people will more likely be looking for that than some hamlet they have never heard of, right? Hobbitschuster (talk) 20:58, 21 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Do not think it is like a German forest. Most trees were cut down during world war one and never replanted. It really is just a few outcrops of trees. Agree the name is know world wide because of Robin Hood but really is little more that a few small tourist attractions. Thinking about it, maybe we should create a Robin Hood legend travel topic and direct there, can then mention other places of interest in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. --Traveler100 (talk) 08:05, 22 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Time and date formatting

edit

I've asked at Talk: England which format to use for articles about England - 12-hr or 24-hr clock. Ground Zero (talk) 15:26, 13 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

The conclusion of that discussion seems to be that the 12-hr format (9AM-noon, 7PM-midnight) format is preferred for articles about destinations in England. Ground Zero (talk) 18:13, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Statistics Update Date

edit

Am I right in thinking the stats have been updated more recently than the stated 10 April 2017? Or is it an update that is still underway? PsamatheM (talk) 22:59, 8 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

It's entirely conceivable that I only half updated it. Do check whether the numbers check out... Hobbitschuster (talk) 19:48, 10 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I have updated it, should really do the whole table in a single update. --Traveler100 (talk) 02:44, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
