Actually, Canton refers to the city of Guangzhou, not the province of Guangdong.

Revert

I just reverted an edit changing this from a redirect to a disambiguation page. We already have Canton (disambiguation) & it seems to me "Canton" historically referred to the city not the province.

"Canton" can refer to either the city or the province, and I have seen it used to refer to both. My hunch is that "Canton" is an English mispronunciation of "Guangdong". The dog2 (talk) 13:40, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Either way, the phrase "Guangzhou [...] is the capital of Guangdong Province" comes early in the article (first sentence of the real lead), so clicking on the province there is nearly as easy as clicking it from the disambiguation page – and those trying to reach the city don't have to bother. I've only ever seen Canton referring to the city. There are cities named Canton, such as one in Ohio, but I agree with the redirect to Guangzhou, as that's overwhelmingly the most common meaning for Canton in English. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:00, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

I've seen Canton used to refer both to the province ("Canton Province") and the city ("Canton City"). It's an old-fashioned term for both, though – "Guangdong" and "Guangzhou" are much more common nowadays. I'm inclined to think a disambiguation page (including the Cantons in the US) makes the most sense in this case. —Granger (talk · contribs) 15:17, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
