Does anyone know if any of the hotels in Humen provides WIFI in its lobby areas at all?

Hi, Hyatt Regency Dongguan has wifi in its lobby (http://dongguan.regency.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/services/internet/index.jsp).
I'm not sure if this is close enough to Humen for you...

Crackdown on prostitution?

edit

Multiple arrests reported in Dongguan. This bears watching and, if it is the start of a real crackdown rather than just a bit of theater, the article needs a warning for travellers. Pashley (talk) 19:55, 10 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Prostitution is illegal in China, is available pretty much available everywhere and police do launch crackdowns now and then.
Although Dongguan has a stronger reputation than most places in China, I think if you want to warn people then probable do so at the country level in China.
As with the recent contention over vice on WV/signpost, definitely be careful not provide advice about how to procure such services. Andrewssi2 (talk) 02:29, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
OK, maybe I didn't appreciate the gravity of the situation. http://www.asiasentinel.com/society/hong-kong-flee-from-china-sex-raid/
It seems 10% of the city is involved in the sex trade (between 500,000 and 800,000 people). The Baidu heat map of people escaping is very illuminating. Andrewssi2 (talk) 04:06, 13 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Split?

edit

Like some other prefecture-level cities, Dongguan includes a number of distinct towns with their own identities that to some extent function as separate destinations. I think it might make sense to follow the example of Jiangmen and make Dongguan into a region article covering a number of towns.

We already have a separate article for one of the towns, Houjie. The Dongguan article currently has clusters of POIs in Humen and Changping, so I think those two can fairly easily support city articles (a new Humen article would be at usable status; Changping would probably still be an outline). A "Central Dongguan" article could be started, similar to Central Jiangmen.

I'm not sure what to do with outlying attractions like Lianhua Mountain in Chang'an. If we turn Dongguan into a region as I'm proposing, should we split them out too, into barebones city articles? (Chang'an is big and distinctive enough to support its own city article, but currently it would be an outline with only one listing.) Or would it be better to leave attractions like Lianhua Mountain in the Dongguan region article until their towns are fleshed out with more POIs?

Pinging STW932 in case you have an opinion on any of this. —Granger (talk · contribs) 01:59, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

It's messy to divide only part of a region into bottom-level articles. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:56, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Chongqing (municipality) shows how this can be done in a non-messy way, that is by listing POIs in the non-districtified areas under 'Other destinations'. I agree, however, that this is not exactly ideal. STW932 (talk) 04:59, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see there are 5 "See" listings in outlying areas. Are there any places to stay, restaurants, stores, etc. in those areas? I don't think 5 listings is too bad, but if a "Dongguan/Outlying areas" article could be fleshed out a bit, it'd be good. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:18, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree it's not ideal (though neither is the current situation, with Houjie alone split out as a separate article). Chongqing (municipality) is a good example to look at, thanks.
After taking a closer look - two of the outlying "See" listings (Songshan Lake and the nearby Huawei campus) seem to be in Dalang, where we also have two hotels and a "Do", so that could more easily be its own city article. That would leave us with five "homeless" listings: Guangdong Memorial Hall in Dalingshan, Lianhua Mountain in Chang'an, Yinping Mountain in Xiegang, Guanyin Mountain in Zhangmutou, and Dongguan Basketball Center in Liaobu. Each of those towns could probably support its own city article in principle – they each have over 100,000 people and I imagine they all get plenty of business travellers – it's just that we don't have people with enough local knowledge to flesh out those articles. We could combine them in an "outlying areas" article, though that would be an odd-shaped, somewhat arbitrary, and possibly non-contiguous area. Or we could lump Changping in with the other outlying towns, giving us five bottom-level articles (central Dongguan, Houjie, Humen, Dalang, and outlying areas). I suspect in an ideal world each town would have its own article.
Another idea is to split out central Dongguan, Humen, Changping, and Dalang, list each outlying mountain as an "Other destination" in this article like in Chongqing (municipality), cover Guangdong Memorial Hall in the article for nearby Dalang, and lump Dongguan Basketball Center in with central Dongguan. That would account for all current listings. —Granger (talk · contribs) 09:09, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
That sounds like a solid plan to me. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 09:34, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
The "outlying areas" as we currently define them are indeed a "an odd-shaped, somewhat arbitrary, and possibly non-contiguous area" even with Changping included, so I'm inclined to support the last option, but the proposed positioning of the Guangdong Memorial Hall and the Dongguan Basketball Center also seems somewhat arbitrary. Would future listings close to those two places also go under Dalang and Central Dongguan? I'm going to try to add a few more POIs to this article in the not-too-distant future. STW932 (talk) 14:02, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
My suggestion about the basketball center and memorial hall was mainly to avoid creating new city articles with only one listing each. Maybe it would be better to start new articles for Dalingshan and Liaobu too, especially if you think you'll have more POIs to add to them. Or we can keep those two listings here in the region article with the mountains, at least for the time being. Regardless, we can always create new city articles for other towns in the future when we have information to put in them. —Granger (talk · contribs) 14:39, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
To answer your specific question: I think if we put the memorial hall in the Dalang article, we would still have the option to split out a separate Dalingshan article sometime in the future if we get more POIs there or otherwise decide it makes sense, and likewise for Liaobu. —Granger (talk · contribs) 14:47, 19 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
By any chance, are you able to make a rough map? (feel free to make a rough one using geojson.io or the Wikivoyage Districtifier) --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:56, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
There's a map in Chinese here (maybe not helpful if you can't read Chinese), or you can use the maps in the Wikipedia articles about each town to get an idea of where they are. In my mind the region article would follow the official administrative boundaries of Dongguan, and the city markers would go approximately in the central urban area of each town. —Granger (talk · contribs) 11:26, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
My zh-0 does not help, but using official boundaries will massively help when creating the map. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 20:24, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
