Name

Why "East Slavic nations" instead of "Eastern Europe", which is (a) a much more commonly understood term (even if definitions vary), and (b) the term we use at Europe? Ground Zero (talk) 12:59, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

I prefer East Slavic nations. The term is probably one of the most ambiguous terms geographically, where sometimes the Baltics are considered eastern europe, and sometimes it's not. Greece, Turkey and the former nations of Yugoslavia is also sometimes considered Eastern Europe because, they're literally, in the east of Europe. Why use an unnecessary ethnic moniker when there are significant non-Slavic (e.g. Turkic and Moldovan) populations in the region? Presumably because East Slavic languages dominate? Your continued attempts to divide Europe along ethnolinguistic lines that don't have much, if any, relevance to travellers baffles me.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:36, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Lots of regions lack clear definitions, but we define clearly what we mean by them.

And while parts of Russia are in Asia, we have that problem with including it in Europe, not just in Eastern Europe. Almost all of Turkey is in Asia too, but we include it in Europe because we are usually commonly understood meanings, rather than technical ones.

Given Europe's terroble history with wars caused by those seeking to define nations by ethnicity, I think we should avoid doing so in our travel guide. Ground Zero (talk) 18:41, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Eastern Europe is, I think, a better name for the article. It is the easternmost part of Europe. Also, we should include just the European part of Russia here, which shouldn't be a problem given that this is an extra-hierarchical region. Ypsilon (talk) 19:16, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

This region is coherent when it comes to cultural and political heritage. It would complete the European geographic hierarchy, including the less recognized territories. If there are issues with the name, please suggest a renaming. /Yvwv (talk) 22:21, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Is there any evidence that anyone else uses East Slavic nations to describe these countries? As I suggested above, if Russia can be in Europe, it can be in Eastern Europe, a simple term that can be understood by travellers, not one that we have made up ourselves in Wikivoyage. While the term Eastern Europe has its deficiencies, it seems to be a slightly less controversial term than East Slavic nations. As our established regions Balkans and Baltic states have more clear definitions, the term becomes more clear. /Yvwv (talk) 23:42, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
