While working on a banner for the Hakka phrasebook, I came across a nice image that might be better than the current banner here. It depicts an attraction in Huizhou (the pagoda mentioned in "See") rather than the skyline. What do others think? —Granger (talk · contribs) 00:25, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

I haven't been to Huizhou (yet), but my strong impression is that it's a place people go to for natural attractions (beaches and mountains) more than urban attractions. That's one thing I like about the second banner. A few minutes ago I asked someone who has relatives in the city – she said she's been to where the pagoda in the second banner is, but her reaction to the first banner was a surprised "That's Huizhou?" I'm not sure if we have any active editors who've been to the city, but I can ping User:Pashley, who used to live in the Pearl River Delta too. —Granger (talk · contribs) 09:17, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Hakka pronunciation

@The dog2: Are you sure about the pronunciation you added? My friend who speaks Hakka natively pronounces it something like "Fěizhū" (that's my best approximation with hanyu pinyin). wikt:惠州 seems to give a similar pronunciation. So I just want to check—are you sure about the pronunciation "Fui4ziu1"? —Granger (talk · contribs) 23:40, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

@Mx. Granger: Come to think of it, it may well be the case that the local Hakka pronunciation differs from the Mexian pronunciaton. If your friend is a local from Huizhou, please correct the pronunciation as you see fit according to his/her pronunciation. If you are interested, there is actually a video on YouTube where a Hakka speaker from Hong Kong and a Hakka speaker from Malaysia want to Taiwan and tried to communicate with the Hakka speakers there. Even though they were all speaking Hakka, you will notice that they did encounter some difficulty in communication because of the dialectal differences. The only catch is that there are no English subtitles, and I'm not sure whether your Chinese is good enough to understand the Chinese subtitles (in traditional characters). My friend is from Meizhou, actually. I searched online for videos of people speaking 惠州话 and found that their pronunciation did sound more like "fui" than "fei", so maybe the pronunciation you added is indeed the local pronunciation. —Granger (talk · contribs) 23:49, 6 September 2019 (UTC)

The lede

So to start, my wife is from Huizhou and I've been there many times. With that out of the way: What on earth is this lede talking about? This is not some weird anomaly of a city full of glitz from crime bosses; it's an ordinary 3rd tier city in China. Yes, it's probably a bit wealthier than most thanks to its relative proximity to Shenzhen and to a lesser extent Guangzhou and Hong Kong, but it's a normal city. This lede sounds like a novel, not a travel guide. Heimstern (talk) 15:49, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
