Old shopping arcades

edit

I think old shopping arcades, the 19th century equivalent of the shopping center, would also fit in this list when they have the same "feel" as a department store of the same time. Comments? Ypsilon (talk) 16:34, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

It makes sense to have a section for them, especially if they're active like the gallerie in Milan and Naples. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:09, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Possibly we could broaden the topic as legacy retailers or similar. Including every corner shop with a rich history would of course be impossible, but old and famous market halls, auctions, and bazaars might be considered. /Yvwv (talk) 20:40, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
We should probably change the name to reflect the broader scope, since quite a number of historic shopping arcades are included. We could also create a separate article for shopping arcades, since there's quite a number of nice ones in Australia as well. The dog2 (talk) 16:47, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hudson's Bay

edit

Is the Hudson's Bay Company worth a mention here? Does it have a flagship store we might link to? Pashley (talk) 19:51, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I think only the Calgary and Vancouver stores are original. The Winnipeg store just closed down in 2020. The dog2 (talk) 22:32, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Now covered at Legacy_retailers#Canada. Pashley (talk) 15:52, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Geo

edit

This is a really great idea for an article! But I don't think we should use geo. I think we should link to the relevant local articles. Maps showing the whole world with points on it are not convenient for anyone. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:02, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I think we should wait before removing geo. At the moment the stores are all in very major cities and geo may not be required. But if later additions include stores in lower profile cities, then readers may want to zoom in on the map to see where about the store is. For example the oldest department store was established in 1734 in Derby - can we assume that everybody knows where Derby is? AlasdairW (talk) 22:13, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
No, but if we link the Derby article, they can find out. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:50, 3 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Having looked into the Derby store, I don't think it is worth listing here as it is in a shop which only opened in 2021 after being online only for a couple of years - there won't be anything historic to see. I did add a listing to Derby.
I think listings in travel topics should always link to city listings for the details of street address, opening hours etc (unless the topic only covers a city or small region). AlasdairW (talk) 23:07, 3 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

New York City

edit

@Ikan Kekek: Do you think the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman should be listed as well? The dog2 (talk) 23:03, 5 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Inspired from Grand old hotels, the recommended age limit is pre-World War II, but exceptions can be made. NYC certainly has plenty of legacy department stores. /Yvwv (talk) 23:10, 5 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'd say yes. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:27, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Bazaars?

edit

Should the great bazaars of Asia & North Africa be listed here? Given their own section? Pashley (talk) 03:29, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure about that. I feel like they fit more with a topic on farmers' markets and big indoor markets like Pike Place in Seattle and Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:48, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
The Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne is also a major tourist attraction. It has multiple buildings and sheds, some of which are in a Victorian architectural style. I included it here, but it may not be as grand as some of the historic food halls in Europe like La Boqueria in Barcelona. It's not only a tourist attraction though. Locals go there to buy groceries too. The dog2 (talk) 16:30, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Possibly, bazaars focused on food can be described with market halls and fish auctions in an article such as legacy food markets. /Yvwv (talk) 20:09, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
