Like Beaver Island, this is being held back from guide status because of the lack of a custom pagebanner. Should we upgrade to guide anyway or not? Selfie City (talk) 22:18, 26 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

I see a banner has been added, but I think we can do better. What do you think of these? Alternative 1 shows some of the scenery on the route, and alternative 2 gives a sense of how the road got its nickname. —Granger (talk · contribs) 10:53, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Numbers #2 and #3 are both fine with me. Probably, #2 is slightly better, although #3 captures the spirit of the road better, IMO. For me, I guess it's a tie. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 13:42, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Which is #3? They are labelled #1 and #2. Ground Zero (talk) 17:17, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'd go for Alternative 2, because it shows so clearly just how lonely a road it is. And it also has scenery, it's just that the hills are in the distance. Maybe Alternative 1 could be used somewhere else? It's very pretty and iconically Western. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:29, 15 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I like the new banner! --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 18:22, 18 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Capitalization edit

Loneliest Road in America or Loneliest road in America? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 06:30, 11 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

According to the article, it was given this name as a proper name by Life Magazine. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:07, 11 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it is a proper name hence its capitalization. --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 16:34, 12 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

What image? edit

From the article: "For example, what you see in the image is the record temperature reached for each month in Ely." I don't see any such image. Was that text just copied and pasted from an article that has such an image? Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:01, 22 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

It used to have this chart, but it was removed in December 2018.

The revision removing it said "This climate chart is really wrong. Is that the records or something?" despite the fact that the text around it clearly said "here is the record temperature reached for each month" and "Obviously, these are records".
A few of the records have changed since then. I'll add an updated version back to the article. —The preceding comment was added by 2600:1700:e670:850:863:f5f0:e264:e837 (talkcontribs)
Thanks for doing that. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:40, 15 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
I changed the title of the chart, to make clear it is about records from Ely. But what about the wordings in the running text? The itinerary mentions mountain ranges and a few passes, but it says nothing about how high the road goes. Do extremes in the passes differ significantly from those of Ely?
The article says that "if your car broke down and it was even close to the record lowest [...] you will probably die within a very short period of time, especially if you left your vehicle." The record, −35 °C (−30 °F), is quite common in Finnish Lapland in midwinter and people do live there. Schoolchildren might not go out for breaks in those temperatures, but life goes on (we did have -34°C even in Turku once – bitterly cold, yes, but I walked the 3 km to school; a few of my classmates went out to buy ice cream, just for the weirdness of it).
In Nevada, you have mountains and plains, so wind chill can make matters much worse, but I think we should have (a link to) a discussion. If you go there in winter, you shouldn't be equipped for the comfort of your car.

FTR, the IP was referring to Special:Diff/3677931. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 09:58, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

To Guide edit

What work is needed for this article to get to guide level? This would be a nice itinerary to feature someday (hopefully when it is reasonable to drive this using an electric car, a tall order for such a remote road, with existing technology). Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:29, 23 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Yeah I’ve done the route and I think taking it using an electric car would be difficult. This may change as Tesla, for example, increases its network of charging devices. However, that was about 5 years ago so things may have changed since then. I remember enough of the route that I can probably add more information. --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 02:05, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
