Regency vs City

There is also an article about the Semarang (regency). I am not sure if these two articles should be merged, or if the regency is something different, such as a region that contains the city. -- (WT-en) Huttite 06:38, 15 December 2009 (EST)

Revising

Felix suggested that this article needs a good deal of help and asked if I'd be willing to take a stab at it since I lived there for 6 years in Jatingaleh. I think I'll first try to go through and clean it up, then go through again and make it more substantial by adding more meat to it. I hope that if you find something objectionable, you will please first raise it with me here in talk rather than reverting it as I find that most rude, and I have no desire to get into an edit war with someone - discussion is slower but more productive. My knowledge is not exhaustive but I have consent from someone I met to make indirect use of his knowledge posted on another site to improve things here, and he has written extensively on touring Semarang. Getting Around and transportation in general

I have made some revision in the getting around section, especially regarding bus routes. I have also added the bus information to the airport part (Get in/ by air) section. I have the feeling that the listing of bus routes might be unnecessary (the listing of places passed by the minibus routes most probably is). In other articles the get around section normally only give a brief description and then refers you to a map or the official transportation website or some journey planner for the exact routing and fares. However, in this case official websites does not exist so I'm not too sure whether the routes should be listed. I have a self-made map in progress, but it is not yet 100% finished. Another thing is with regards to the use of roman vs arabic numerals. Officially the bus uses roman numerals, the display boards will say 'Koridor IV', but I'm not sure which numeral should be used here. Buses changed to roman numeral. List of places where bus routes pass are pasted here as I don't think they belong to the 'Get around' section, probably to be pasted to relevant sections (e.g. Get in/by bus if it is about the local bus route to the bus terminal)

Some popular places in Semarang that can be reached by mini bus/bus are:

• Pasar Johar, you need to board Daihatsu with the route Johar-Sampangan.

• ADA Siliwangi Supermarket, you need to board Daihatsu with the route PRPP-Klipang

• Tawang Train Station, Damri No.1 Terboyo-Banyumanik.

• Poncol Station, Daihatsu Semarang-Salatiga.

• Terboyo Bus Terminal, Damri No.1 or Damri No.2.

• Undip (Diponegoro University), Damri No.1 or Damri No.5.

Airline route list

Is the airline route list really necessary? From what I see in other good pages normally less detail is provided, mostly just on the destinations served and the airlines operating on the airport only.

Further to that, there is no point keeping a super-detailed list as airline routes come and go so in my opinion it's better to outline the general destinations and link to respective airline websites with more up to date information. Ditz (talk) 20:00, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Ok. Here I tried rewriting the Get in- by plane section. Some sections of the 'airport walkthrough' might be excessive, as is the mentioning of flight connections available. I agree with you on detailed lists of this kind. They're more information than any one traveler needs (and therefore encyclopedic), and schedules are subject to change at unpredictable intervals. I added 2 2nd-order subtitles and bolded the airport's name. I think the section is decent now. Thanks for helping! Semarang seems like an interesting place to visit, so it would be good to polish this article and make it a stronger guide, then nominate it for a front-page feature. Boundaries between budget / mid-range / splurge accommodation

Is Rp 250k ($25 (or 20 these days) USD) and Rp 500k ($50 USD) a good benchmark to follow? I note that Jakarta uses Rp 500k and Rp 1 million, but Semarang is in general a cheaper city. Ditz (talk) 23:53, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

I do agree with User:Ikan Kekek idea. I do recognize that Jakarta's standard of living is different (more expensive) compared to other Indonesian cities. If you can see a trend of what is cheap and expensive to Semarang's standard, you can indicate your own range. Feel free to look at how different cities in a different country stack up for a reference (e.g.: Bangkok vs Chiang Mai in Thailand or London vs Manchester in the UK). OK, purely looking at Bangkok vs Chiang mai, the budget limit is about 1:2, so I'd think 250k and 500k should be good. So more or less, the maximum is 9 per listing category same as elsewhere, correct? Ditz (talk) 18:15, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

OK. Have added some budget accommodation options which were previously lacking. Added with some spread, some hotels in the street with cheap hotel clusters, some in the city centre, one interesting chinese-style in the Chinatown, one old hotel in the old dutch town, one near the bus terminal, one in the 'upper' hilly part of the city. You get the idea... if I put all similar hotel along the same street maybe won't be that beneficial. I guess the ranges I'll just put later once I got the time to see that other than 'Budget' the hotels listed more or less belong to the correct section. Ditz (talk) 01:05, 21 December 2014 (UTC)

To set category budget, mid-range and splurge accomodations now become more difficult mainly for boundary between budget with mid-range, because today many hoteliers make many budget hotels, the price is between budget and (low) mid-range. One budget hotel even can categorized both, if someone not use any aircon and also the towel and the amenities (all are optional), it should be categorized as budget hotel, but if someone use 24 hours aircon, towel and the amenities, sometimes the price is in mid-range category, although the budget accomodation category have more weight than the mid-range hotel category. And 2 stars hotel usually is categorized as budget hotel, but some 2 stars hotels are boutique hotels with price very very high. So, I think to categorized accomodation should be in domestic price bracket, but can be translated to foreign or dollar value, because some currencies are fluctuating. Myself usually categorized hotel (whatever kinds of hotels) as a budget hotel, if the price is same or lower with many 2 stars hotels, 3 stars and 3+ stars as mid-range, and 4 and 5 stars hotels as splurge, but please consider that 4 stars hotel can be categorized as mid-range accomodation, if the price is relatively same with many 3 stars hotels. Yes I think it is important to have the infobox. I think mostly the benchmark price used is the cheapest double room in that particular accommodation, whether it is a fan room, air conditioned room or otherwise. Mostly I think if I look at this section of the article I just want somewhere decent and basic to sleep for a cheap price, whether the bathroom is outside or it is a fan room is OK. It's true that if a room upgrade to a higher grade is needed then for some places the price will bring it over the budget category. But if the hotel offers the possibility to stay at several different price levels, I am more inclined to consider the lower range as a base for consideration. Listing - 'go' category vs general 'other listing'

For things in the get in section (stations, terminals, airports, ports, etc), which kind of listing is appropriate, using the 'go' listing (saw this on a star article although not an option at the editor)- maroon red icon, or the general 'other listing' - green icon? Or no listing at all even? Slightly confused about this. Sorry if this should've gone to the pub instead Ditz (talk) 18:35, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

I don't know the listing types of which you speak, but in general, if listings don't fit into the "See," "Do," "Buy," "Eat," "Drink" or "Sleep" categories, they are given general "Listings" tags. You can produce a "listings" template by clicking the "i" icon that's the furthest right in the group of icons you see above your edit window. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:37, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Formatting like this: The depot is at the {{marker|type=go|name=Alvarado Transportation Center|lat=35.08203|long=-106.64798}} The marker colour is green for general listing, but maroon red for 'go'. Yeah, that's the "marker" template. I haven't used it, but it can be useful in situations in which a full templated listing isn't needed. I don't know enough to care about what kind of "marker" color is used. I'd say, just put in the code, and then if someone wants to change it, they can.
