Talk:Trail of Tears National Historic Trail
Black slaves owned by the tribes
editWhile I understand that this article is meant to commemorate the Native American victims of the Indian Removal Act, it is also known to historians (but not so much to the general public) that the "five civilized tribes" (Chocotaw, Seminole, Cherokee, Chickasaw and Creek) owned black slaves, and brought their slaves with them on the Trail of Tears. While I do not deny that what the Native Americans were put through by white people was horrendous, they didn't exactly treat their black slaves well either, so in many ways, the black slaves owned by the Native Americans are the forgotten victims of the Trail of Tears. Therefore, I was wandering if we should make any mention of these slaves. While I understand that people would like to have simple labels for historical figures as either "victims" or "oppressors", this example shows that history is often complicated, and people can simultaneously be victims while oppressing others. Per the one year rule of itineraries. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 11:30, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- This article mainly lacks information on the route + preparation which is just as bad as not having this article at all. It could be merged into a future United States Historic Trails. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 12:46, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- I've merged the article to the newly created United States Historic Trails. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 13:01, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- Keep as a famous trail that certainly merits an article. The one-year rule specifically exempts famous marked trails. —Granger (talk · contribs) 13:09, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- While I think stubs shouldn't be created even on famous trails, this does have enough information that it is a much better starting point than what would fit into United States National Trails System. –LPfi (talk) 13:52, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- I'm working on expanding it. Please stand by. Ground Zero (talk) 17:23, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
