Gateshead is a town in Tyne and Wear in the northeast of England, situated south of Newcastle upon Tyne on the banks of the river Tyne.

The nearest airport to Gateshead is Newcastle International Airport, which is located around 9 miles (14 km) away by road. Teesside International Airport and Carlisle Lake District Airport are located around 35 and 50 miles (56 and 80 km) away by road, respectively.

From Newcastle International Airport, the Tyne and Wear Metro is the cheapest and most convenient way to reach Gateshead. The journey takes around 25–30 minutes, and costs £3.60.

Carlisle Lake District Airport is located around 5 miles (8.0 km) away by road from the nearest station, Wetheral, and 8 miles (13 km) from Carlisle, where connections can be made to and from Newcastle.

The network is divided in to three zones, with ticket prices ranging between £2.00 and £3.60 for a single journey, and £3.20 and £5.30 for a day ticket.

The nearest National Rail station is located at Newcastle, and is served by CrossCountry, London North Eastern Railway, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Gateshead is well served by bus services, with a number of routes serving Gateshead Interchange. Most bus routes in the area are operated by Go North East.

 Quaylink  is operated by Go North East and links Gateshead with Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside and the Quayside, with buses running every 15 minutes (30 minutes during the evening and on Sunday).
