Regions

Hi, Daniel. You seem to know a lot about the Catskills and the Hudson Valley, and we could really use your input on how to define the border between the two regions. Pagebanner Dimensions

Thanks for all of your work on page banners! However, please be aware that dimensions on page banner images should be 2100x300 - see Template:Pagebanner - so that banners are consistently sized from page to page. -- Ryan • (talk) • 04:08, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

re: User talk:Wrh2#Pagebanner sizes, there is some additional information at Wikivoyage:Banner Expedition#How do I help?. While 2100x300 is recommended, as long as the image has a 7:1 width:height ratio and a minimum width of 1800 then it should work. Photo on left / banner

If there were abundant photos in the article such that we needed to do that, I might consider it ok, but to have just a single one on the left and all the others on the right is strange, and to have right and left across from each other bottlenecks the text in unpredictable ways. Wikivoyage's preference is generally for right-alignment unless there is a clear need to do otherwise. Also, I removed the banner you placed on that article. It's a nice image, but it does not meet our minimum size requirements of being at least 1800px wide -- banners do not scale up/stretch to meet larger screen sizes. Maybe you could remake it at least the right size, or make a new one? Texugo (talk) 17:23, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

I will yield to you on the pictures, since I can see your point about it looking odd to have one picture all there on its own, but that results in the pictures being out of sync with the grafs they are meant to illustrate. Oh well, I suppose I will just have to find (or take) enough other pictures to overstuff the section.

As to the banner, I have upsampled it although I suppose I will eventually take or find one at a preferable size. Daniel Case (talk) 17:29, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. I would encourage you not to "overstuff" the section just for the sake of having more pictures, as we generally try for minimal use of images:

Don't get overexcited adding images to articles. Travellers may be using Wikivoyage from networks with very low bandwidth. In some countries, an internet café with ten computers connected to a single 56k modem is still fairly common. Even travellers in developed countries can often be limited to 10k mobile GPRS access.

This doesn't mean no images, just no more images than are necessary to make the article beautiful and informative.

New pagebanner

Hi, Daniel. The normal procedure when replacing an existing banner is to seek a consensus on the article's talk page before acting. You deserve a little leeway because you gave a specific content-related reason for replacing the banner, but for a point of reference, have a look at the edit war that's been going on in the Iran article and the related discussion at Talk:Iran.

Ikan, if that's the case, it's a recent development. Wikivoyage:Banner expedition says "Banners may be replaced by more appropriate banners. ... Leave an edit summary explaining why the new banner is more appropriate. If anyone disagrees with a substitution for reasons other than correct sizing or image quality, temporarily replace the banner with the appropriate default banner and get consensus on the article talk page." I very much enjoyed your helpful new sub-section with practical advice; it's exactly what is helpful to travellers rather than academic treatises. A word of warning, though: I fear that your helpful external links to explanatory articles and videos will be deleted shortly.

PS: I hope you'll forgive my pernickety copy editing; I thought you'd finished editing for the day. The reason I substituted Al Jazeera is that it seemed offensive to conjoin the BBC with the lightweight and US-centric CNN - did you know that Qatar is for practical purposes an English speaking country because of all the Filipina maids and Indian labourers (never mind British car salesmen)... --222.127.76.207 06:36, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Forbidden City

Thanks for your kind words! I look forward to seeing your further improvements on Forbidden City.

I still think some of the other areas that have close spatial and historical relationships with the Forbidden City should all be put together in article - e.g. to carve Beihai and Zhongnanhai out of Xicheng. It seems odd that, for example, Beihai, Jingshan and the Forbidden City are not covered in the same article, since most visitors will most likely be covering them on the same trip. What do you think? Any appetite in creating some sort of "Imperial City" or "Forbidden City and surrounds" article? --PalaceGuard008 (talk) 21:54, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
