Hello, Danapit! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here.

Thank you for helping out with the photo hunt! --Peter Talk 19:17, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Peter, Thanks for your welcoming message. I have some experience with Wikipedia and joint WT recently only to swiftly convert to WV. I enjoy editing and improving as I read and will surely continue when I have a little extra time. --Danapit (talk) 18:52, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for cropping the picture of Na'in Naintours (talk) 14:50, 5 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Users with (WT-en) edit

Hi there. It likely won't do any good to leave messages on talk pages of users with "(WT-en)" after their names -- those users were contributors on Wikitravel before the fork to WMF, and have likely never visited here or at the very least have not claimed their old user name on our new site. Just a heads-up. Texugo (talk) 16:12, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ups, I see. Thanks for letting me know... Is there anything I can do now? --Danapit (talk) 16:16, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, the image that the user had uploaded to WT can be found on various sites such as [1] and [2]. If you can absolutely confirm that the image is compatible with our license, etc. you could upload it to commons yourself, but my guess is that it is not and probably shouldn't have been uploaded to WT in the first place. Texugo (talk) 17:35, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
OK, I somehow expected it to be the user's original work, but more likely it isn't, so we just skip the map for the time being. Thanks for advise. --Danapit (talk) 18:25, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

page banner edit

nice page banners! I especially like Westfjords, keep up the good work. Lumpytrout (talk) 13:23, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

thank you! Danapit (talk) 14:11, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Nice job on Xiamen too. Could you also do something for Gulangyu? The current banner there is moderately awful but it appears to be the only thing on Commons that is the right size & shape unmodified. Pashley (talk) 13:12, 31 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks and yes, I'll see what I can do. Danapit (talk) 13:15, 31 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'd like one for Shanghai/Jiading and found some nice Commons images of the Chinese Grand Prix which is held there, like [3]. Looks like they are too small, though. Is that fixable? This is not at all urgent; the article is only an outline and the area is a fairly unimportant suburb. Pashley (talk) 00:14, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Can you find one for Retiring abroad? That is a favorite of mine, the only star article that is mostly my writing. Pashley (talk) 12:28, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
How about On the trail of Kipling's Kim? Could this one be trimmed to make a banner? Pashley (talk) 20:54, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Or this one for On the trail of Marco Polo? Pashley (talk) 21:22, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for both of those. Pashley (talk) 19:16, 9 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Not urgent, but could you look at the other Shanghai#Districts? Some have banners, others none, and a few like Shanghai/French Concession have ugly generic banners. Pashley (talk) 18:41, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I started with cropping the Shanghai banner to the correct ratio and I will have a look what I can do with the districts banners. It's a tough one for me - I am more familiar with Mars than Shanghai. Danapit (talk) 07:39, 17 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Nice work on those. Thanks. Pashley (talk) 14:58, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Could you do a banner for Three Parallel Rivers National Park? The area is famously scenic so there should be something good somewhere.
On Commons, there is a Category:Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas and its subcategory Category:Meili_Xue_Shan is correct.
The other subcategory, Category:Tiger Leaping Gorge ir wrong; that is not in the Parallel Rivers region. On the other hand, our Tiger Leaping Gorge article could probably also use a banner. Pashley (talk) 14:58, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Tiger Leaping Gorge done, but in Category:Meili_Xue_Shan there is no image with sufficient resolution. Neither Flickr shows any CC content. Except when I search for "Rivers of Yunnan", then the result shows this. Might any of those pix be suitable? I could upload it to Commons and crop for a banner then. Danapit (talk) 21:21, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have found something for Three Parallel Rivers National Park, does the picture belong there? And does it look good? Danapit (talk) 21:58, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
yes, yes & thanks. Pashley (talk) 23:35, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Here is today's picture of the day on Commons:

To me, this just begs to be used as a banner somewhere, though I am not sure where. I thought first of Silk Road but that already has a nice banner. Full resolution ‎is 4,525 × 1,932 pixels, so it is large enough. Pashley (talk) 18:09, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

That's a really nice photo! I've parked it with Jerusalem/Old_City for the time being. Danapit (talk) 06:47, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Can you please crop the banner at Shanghai/Huangpu? Pashley (talk) 18:09, 17 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  Done Danapit (talk) 19:25, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Kunming has a destination of the month Wikivoyage:Destination_of_the_month_candidates#Kunming nomination and may be scheduled soon, but it lacks a banner. Pashley (talk) 15:08, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I was very happy to find a beautiful picture of a bridge near Kunming lake, but then I found out it was in Beijing ;) There are really plenty of pictures of Kunming at commons, but I failed to find one exceptionally suitable for a pretty banner... I will try again later. Danapit (talk) 08:39, 12 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for letting me know on banner width. I changed them to ~1800px but don't know how to crop to 7:1 ratio. Shikuesi3 (talk) 03:07, 1 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Shikuesi3, there is a short manual on how to trim the photos in GIMP in the Banner_Expedition site. But the exact method varies depending on which software you use. If you can't do it on your own, other editors including myself can take over the task once the wronly sized banners are marked. Danapit (talk) 06:51, 1 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Northern Lights November vs. January edit

I moved Northern Lights to January to avoid it being featured the same month as Churchill. Peter indicated in his comments that the Northern Lights was also one of the two major attractions in Churchill, the other being polar bear season (Oct-Nov). Thus, Churchill and the Northern Lights are too similar to each other to be on the Main Page simultaneously. Placing the Northern Lights on the schedule in January - arguably a better timeslot than November, given that nights are longer - is a far better alternative than moving Churchill away from a spot that encompasses both polar bear season and the aurora. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 16:29, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am not buying the argument about longer nights in January (21.1.-20.2.) than in November (21.11.-20.12.). The picture shows the night lengths in the middle of each monthly FTT featuring period (that means practically the 5th day of the following months) at 60° N (for example Helsinki).
For the same reason I am not convinced about the featuring period November to March, either. September (featuring period) for example has just as long nights as February and August as March. Usually late October - late December are more cloudy at least in European higher latitudes, so arguably not ideal for observation.
To be clear, my (and Pashley's) argument for featuring Lights in the start of the aurora season is that travellers have still time to do some bookings for the late season, as discussed in the nomination.
I don't think Churchill and the Northern Lights are too similar to each other to be on the Main Page simultaneously, on the contrary, they are perfectly complementary. Danapit (talk) 07:43, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'd actually be in favor of waiting a year on Churchill rather than bump the Northern Lights feature so far back in the season. The main point of my nominating it was to alert our readers to the fact that they should start booking their long-planned trips now for this year's season, since it will be the best for viewing the lights for the next dozen years. --Peter Talk 08:03, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Would it be a problem to feature in September and keep Churchill for November? (Teaching English and Silk road can be shifted, right?) As far as I am concerned, the problem was we didn't have a strong consensus for featuring OUTSIDE of the suggested period. Maybe we can change this based on the argument with the day length? Danapit (talk) 08:12, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
That would certainly work. September if anything would be better, I think, since it's earlier notice of the best in a decade+ opportunity to see something amazing. --Peter Talk 08:17, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm actually really surprised to hear that nights in January are shorter than in November, the solstice being in late December. Thanks for posting that chart, Danapit, which really put the issue into perspective. I'm on board with this arrangement. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 16:57, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Andre, part of the trick is that the FTT featuring period starts towards the end of given month, so larger part of it is actually in the next month. Slightly misleading. Danapit (talk) 17:59, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have been adding maps to numerous pages. You can have a look at Kolkata/Maidan and Kolkata/South. You are welcome to post your comments on my talk page. Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 13:20, 17 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

There usually are too many eateries in a city and when coordinates are added to too many of them the map becomes too cluttered. I am adding coordinates in exceptional cases for eateries, as for example for China Town in Kolkata/South, because it is a relatively less known place, particularly for tourists. Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 13:47, 17 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the late response - I've been away. See Wikivoyage:How to merge two pages. Once the content has been copied over you can just change the old page into a redirect. Another banner request edit

This is not at all urgent, but a banner for Lake Tai would be nice. The lake and countryside are rather pretty, so it should be possible. Some stuff at [4]. I like the sunset photo and it is 2800*2100 so might be possible, but it might not look good if cropped enough. Pashley (talk) 01:25, 13 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sure, I'll see to that. --Danapit (talk) 08:06, 13 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Pashley (talk)

On the list at Wikivoyage:World cities/Large, there are only about half a dozen cities left without custom banners. Could you look at those when you have time? Pashley (talk) 13:14, 22 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Done. Hope you like them, in case you are not happy with some, let me know ;) --Danapit (talk) 18:40, 25 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
They look fine to me. Thanks. Pashley (talk) 22:34, 25 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

How about Quanzhou and maybe Chongwu? I think this one might do for Chongwu after cropping; that is not a big deal; it is quite a minor place. Quanzhou, though, is large & quite important historically. To my surprise, I do not see much for it on Commons. Pashley (talk) 20:37, 8 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Pashley, sorry for the delay. I haven't been around much recently. I will have a look at these two banners asap. The one you suggested doesn't look too good when cropped though. Danapit (talk) 08:41, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

How about Montreal/Old Montreal? That area is very scenic, so there should be some good ones. To right is firs one I find on Commons that is big enough. Pashley (talk) 21:57, 6 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Have a look at Talk:Montreal/Old Montreal, I selected 3 images o choose from. Btw, the pic you suggested, doesn't it by any chance show Qebec, not Montreal? I am not sure about this at all, as I've never visited neither of them. I didn't find the picture nice when cropped 7:1 though. Danapit (talk) 10:22, 7 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Re the banner. There is a 476kb version of the photo at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Aqua_Claudia.JPG. If you could use this to restore (and improve:-)) my previous banner I'd be very grateful. Thanks Roundtheworld (talk) 20:14, 23 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I have uploaded a new file at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aqueduct_Rome.jpg This is 2100x300px. Unfortunately, as far as I can work out, during the uploading process Commons converted it to a different size file, so it does not work in the banner. What did I do wrong? Thanks Roundtheworld (talk) 07:39, 16 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I added the banner to Rome/South, and it looks good. Roundtheworld, it looks like you wrote out the file name including "File:" as one has to do when adding photos. When adding a banner one should omit that (the banner template is constructed that way, don't ask me why). ϒpsilon (talk) 11:23, 16 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Roundtheworld, that's a very nice banner. Thanks for fixing the problem, Ypsi. --Danapit (talk) 08:15, 18 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Pagebanner sizes edit

I believe some of the banners I added were within that 7:1 ratio already and didn't/don't need to be cropped. Or is the idea that they shouldn't be much more than that? The guidelines currently state that as if it's a minimum ... if it's a range, the page should say so more clearly because that was the assumption I was operating under. Daniel Case (talk) 21:38, 31 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Daniel Case, I'm sorry if I marked some of banners with a correct (7:1) ratio, which ones were they? Many were approximately 7:1, like 6.5:1. However there is no reason for not sticking to an exact ratio. Nobody is going to remove the banner just for that reason (although it says so on the template), but once they're marked, I or someone else who works on banners can synchronize them with WV standards. As far as I know there is no problem with large size, its only minimum size that has to be kept. Danapit (talk) 06:37, 1 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
None of them really lost much in the cropping ... but most were at about 7.x:1, based on the dividing the x pixel axis by the y. Is that the criterion we're using? Daniel Case (talk) 21:01, 1 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Daniel Case, that's the criterion. Like 2100:300=7.0:1. Those that I cropped so far (for example Wadi Rum or Beijing/Dongcheng) were quite a bit off. And yes, my hobby is nitpicking :) Danapit (talk) 21:20, 1 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
OK, I'll keep that in mind when creating future banners. I would say that we shouldn't be going much further than, say, 7.1? (keeping in mind that with the cropping tools in most image-editing programs, it's kind of hard to be that precise). Daniel Case (talk) 22:06, 1 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
We prefer exactly 7:1; the idea is to make sure all of the interface elements that are associated with the banner remain in the same place on every page. Powers (talk) 23:55, 1 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, but what if I can't crop down to 7.0 exactly? What's the tolerance? 7.0what? Daniel Case (talk) 00:13, 2 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
I believe that in most editing programms there is a tool for cropping in a fixed ratio, which you can preset, in our Banner expedition there is a mini-manual how to do it in GIMP. If you for some reason don't use that, take the most precise that division of x pixel axis by number 7 allows. This is probably what my editor does when I select a width that can cannot be divided by 7 and get an integer. Danapit (talk) 07:18, 2 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Or just shave one to six pixels off the long dimension to make it an even multiple of 7. =) Powers (talk) 18:09, 2 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Falun maiden på svenska? edit

I noticed the picture to the right, also present in the Falun article, was taken by you. I've never heard about these statues before, but wanted to add a Swedish name to the Falun article to help visitors who want to buy it, but Google didn't turn up anything useful. Can you maybe remember? Falufröken? Faludam? Faluflicka? Falutjej? Falufru? Or is it something with only an English name and they put up on the shelf when non-Scandinavian tourists are approaching? ;) ϒpsilon (talk) 19:15, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi ϒpsilon! Actually, I didn't know what they were called at all, I was simply correcting a red link in the Falun article (for some reason the file was not transferred from the other site to commons) and I happened to have a similar picture I took myself which I could upload to commons and use it for the article. I can have a look in my photoarchive later if I have some more pictures from that visitor center in which some kind of sign might be visible by a chance. But I'm not very optimistic. Sorry! --Danapit (talk) 11:28, 9 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
ϒpsi, I might have an answer for you ;) Falujungfrun - when you google that, you get a couple of pictures of that kind. Danapit (talk) 11:47, 9 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I've added it to Falun's Buy section. ϒpsilon (talk) 14:34, 9 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Caves banner edit

Hi Danapit. The banner you added to the Caves and underground works article looks really great! However, I'd just like to remind you before slapping a {{crop}} onto it, it is smaller than 1800 pixels in width as recommended by WV:Banners, and (at least on my screen) falls short of stretching over all width of the screen. Any possibility that you could re-crop it? Vidimian (talk) 15:31, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

It's weird that the banner looks perfectly okay now at my own personal lap-top. When I posted the message above, I was looking at the much larger screen of the computer in the workplace (I don't have much sense of these computer technicalities, so don't know what caused the problem). Vidimian (talk) 16:21, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Vidimian, you are comlpetely right, I have overlooked the size! Thansk for being alert. I'll take care of it... Danapit (talk) 16:25, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
On my screen the banner looked (I had a look at it when you added it a hour or two ago) and looks entirely normal — not too wide, not too narrow. Only the file's page reveals that the size is 1,512 × 216 pixels. ϒpsilon (talk) 16:32, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the same here, that's why I didn't notice. It's fixed now, I've found another nice pic. Danapit (talk) 16:43, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Too bad that we couldn't keep that extremely pleasant hands banner. Vidimian (talk) 20:17, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
All right, Vidimian, if you like "hands" better, I have found similar, but larger picture at Flickr. Danapit (talk) 18:38, 13 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Great! The hands banner contrasts better with the top picture (Slovenian cave) of that article as well. Not really sure if picking the right banner between the alternatives should depend on my opinion alone, though. Vidimian (talk) 20:55, 13 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

When missing links from Wikipedia are done edit

As per the instructions at Wikivoyage:Search Expedition/Missing links from Wikipedia, when links are done, please remove them from the list, rather than flagging them as done. It is easier to scan the list if they have been removed. Cheers. Nurg (talk) 10:51, 18 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Makes sense :) Thanks, Nurg. --Danapit (talk) 13:04, 18 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Main Page banners for Nuclear tourism edit

Hello!

In less than a week, Ruta del Tránsito goes on the Main Page and Wikivoyage:Destination_of_the_month_candidates#Next_change will need a new banner in the FTT slot. Incidentally, the next FTT will be Nuclear tourism which you've contributed quite a lot to. So I thought you'd maybe like the honor to make a couple of Main Page banner suggestions for the article too. ϒpsilon (talk) 16:51, 15 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, ϒpsilon! I'll come up with some suggestions tomorrow :) --Danapit (talk) 20:10, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Winter in the Nordic countries edit

Hi there!

There's a little project going on aiming to developing Winter in the Nordic countries during this winter to feature it as FTT in late fall 2018. I figured you could be interested. Anyways, Merry Christmas and happy travels! ϒpsilon (talk) 16:24, 18 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi ϒpsilon, Hyvää uutta vuotta! I am very busy in real life these days, so I only noticed your message now. Looking through the article, I could maybe try to expand the Sleep session, because those ice hotels and glass igloos for observing Aurora are surely something special. Driving through Jukkasjärvi last August I was suprized the ice hotel is open all year round now, crazy! --Danapit (talk) 07:24, 10 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
It must be an interesting experience to visit the ice hotel on a warm summer day.
If there's some stuff/phenomenon worth including that us who live in the Nordics have become so used to that we don't come to think of it as something special, feel free to add it too. Anyways, no rush, and have a great 2018. :). ϒpsilon (talk) 08:17, 10 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
It might be an interesting experience, indeed, but we skipped it anyway. It wasn't a warm day either :) --Danapit (talk) 08:27, 10 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Good evening! edit

Nice to see you back and happy easter!

And I have to ask for a little favor as the only admin who's been around here for the last hour or so. Some nutjob from two IPs has had the energy to vandalize Khon Kaen for a whole hour now and it gets a little tiresome reverting them. Thanks ;) ϒpsilon (talk) 19:08, 1 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Good evening ϒpsi and Happy Easter to you too. Thank you for pointing that to me. As you know I'm rather an infrequent guest here these days and copmpletely out of practice. Hope I took the right step blocking the 2 IPs for 2 hours initially. I will lift the protection of Khon Kaen next. --Danapit (talk) 19:24, 1 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
No problems, probably they will have come to think of something better to do by the time the block is over. ϒpsilon (talk) 19:37, 1 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Page banners edit

Thank you for your great work on page banners, especially for the Canadian national park articles. Ground Zero (talk) 21:29, 1 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Administrator status (Official Notice) edit

Thanks for your service as a Wikivoyage administrator. As you may be aware, our Wikivoyage:Administrators policy indicates that administrators who have not edited on the English Wikivoyage in over two years should have their administrator flags removed. This is for account security purposes, not a reflection of a loss of trust or any disappointment.

As such, we will be removing your administrator flag on December 1, 2015. Should you wish to retain your status, simply come on back and make an edit! That resets the clock. And if you ever decide to return to Wikivoyage as an active editor, your administrator flag can be restored by request.

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.

Your removal is along with several other admins as discussed here.

--SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 10:12, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Your status has been changed to autopatroller. If you'd like to resume work as an admin any time, just let us know and we'll be happy to restore your admin flags. Either way, I hope you're having a wonderful life! Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:11, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Ikan Kekek. I spend too much time on computer for work these days, and in my free time I'm trying to catch up with real life ;) I sometimes miss the WV community though. Hope to come back at some point and work on some topics that I'm into these days, like scuba diving or freediving. Danapit (talk) 10:44, 4 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good to me. I miss having you around, but I'm glad you're enjoying life! Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:47, 4 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
