Hello, Kdm852! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. New users are also welcome to post any questions or concerns to the arrivals lounge. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. The wikitable you just posted is not very comprehensible and doesn't help the traveller. Please clarify. Wikivoyage-style article naming and other differences from Wikipedia edit

Hi, Kdm852. You're doing a wonderful job adding content to this site! Much appreciated, and I look forward to whatever else you add in the coming days, weeks, months, etc. That's what's really important, so I don't want to overemphasize matters of mere form, but I do want to mention them because they inform the followup edits I and other experienced users are making to your work.

There are small to moderate but consistent differences between Wikipedia and Wikivoyage style, and one of them is on naming conventions. Please have a look at Wikivoyage:Naming conventions#Hierarchy when you have a spare moment. Specifically, note this:

The shorter we make our URLs, the easier they are to remember and the more likely people are to pass them around. For place names, the basic name of the place, without a whole bunch of localizing addenda, is the best.

In other words, Denver is all you need to find the city of Denver in Colorado. Avoid using [[Denver, Colorado]] or [[Denver, Colorado, United States of America]]. The place of Denver in the world should be clear from the Denver page, or from the Colorado or even United States of America articles. The Breadcrumbs should resolve any remaining ambiguities.

If, and only if, two or more places have the same name, and each also needs a separate Wikivoyage article, then the article titles should be disambiguated by adding a disambiguator.

I'm going to leave out the discussion of how to disambiguate, because so far, the place names you're creating articles for haven't needed it. If we have only one article for a place name, the name of the article is simply that name, not "That Name, The Next Step Up In The Hierarchy" - and in fact, we don't use commas in article naming at all (you'll see at the link that disambiguation on this site, when and only when it's needed, is by parentheses).

Another thing that came up in one article was an inline link to Wikipedia. We normally don't use those except in listings, and you can read about that at Wikivoyage:Links to Wikipedia, or at the general external links page that addresses the lack of inline citations for facts on this site.

If you're confused by edits anyone is making, don't hesitate to ask for the policy/guideline basis or reasoning for them. And please keep on adding that content!

Thanks and all the best,

One other thing is those locator maps showing the position of a town in a county are normally not used on this site. If you think about it, few readers will know what the county looks like, and a dynamic map is quite sufficient for people to find out the position of the town relative to other places in the country: All they have to do is click on it and zoom out. I will probably be removing the locator maps shortly, and then in some instances, there will be enough room to add another image to the articles in question. Ikan Kekek, much obliged for the info, will bear it in mind. Kdm852 (talk) 00:08, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot. And if you have any ideas on how we could make this site more self-explanatory on things like how to start a new Wikivoyage-style article, we'd love to hear about it in the Travellers' pub. I often regret that there are a lot of style points that risk cramping the style of great new content providers like you. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:00, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Addresses edit

Hi. Another style pointer: In the article for Changhua, addresses should exclude the default of Changhua City, Changhua County. Because every address in town has that as part of its address, we give only the street address and geographic coordinates. Perhaps Wikivoyages in other languages have different policies on this, and I don't know if this Wikivoyage's policy is the right one, but it's the one we continue to use with few exceptions (e.g., postal codes are included in British addresses because they truly help in locating a building). Ikan Kekek, Noted, will amend. Kdm852 (talk) 06:42, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
That's great! Just to be clear: The name of the city and everything following that is omitted. So, for example, in the guide to Manhattan/East Village, "New York, NY 10003" would be left out. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:02, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ikan Kekek, Noted, I've removed the city and county from the addresses

Districts edit

Again, magnificent work! Thank you very much for everything!

On districts, though, normally, only Wikivoyage:Huge city article templates have "Districts" sections, and those articles are actually overviews, with detailed listings moved to district articles. Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Taipei are a few examples. Smaller cities do have districts, of course, but we usually don't mention all the names, don't provide a districts map, and don't use a "Districts" section. That said, you should always feel welcome to (a) put an "Orientation" subsection in "Understand", mentioning the names of districts that are important to visitors and what the landmarks and/or main roads or public transit lines are that help them to know which district they're in and how to get from one to the other (though some of those details could also be in "Get around"); (b) propose a district division of any article. Normally, though, we divide cities into districts for the purposes of Wikivoyage only when there are too many listings in the city article and a reasonable division will distribute those listings between the articles. If almost all the attractions are in a single district, as in Karachi, we're usually stuck not "districting" the article even if the city in question is one of the most populous in the world.

This is complex stuff and not self-explanatory. Districting proposals always require some discussion on a city article's talk page. Please feel free to ask me any questions that come to your mind on this subject.

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:51, 18 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

By the way, having said all that, I think Keelung#Districts and the district map on that page are very helpful, so I don't want any of that deleted. The traveller comes first. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:53, 18 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ikan Kekek Thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind in future. I just updated the districts for New Taipei before I noticed there was already a discussion underway about that, but the discussion seems to have come to a bit of a stall over a year ago, so I just kept the district grouping the way it was and grouped the districts accordingly. It should be fairly easy to move them around in future if the consensus goes a different way. I'm fairly confident that there are enough different settlements in this area to qualify for the district grouping as you mentioned in the paragraph above, though. If you have new ideas for how to define the districts of New Taipei optimally for travelers, please propose them at Talk:New Taipei. Districting has often been changed on this site. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:57, 18 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ikan Kekek Yep, I already have. Kdm852 (talk) 23:39, 18 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I'll publicize that on Requests for comment. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:51, 18 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
