Content being disallowed?

Hi all, I've been trying to add some content to the Toronto page about jerk chicken, but it keeps getting auto-blocked. I suspect this is due to the word "jerk" being mentioned several times. Do you know of any ways around this? Shawarman86 (talk) 20:05, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It can't be due to that, as you were able to post the word "jerk" here. I'm guessing something in the URL is on the blacklist, either locally here or, more likely, generally by wikimedia.org. Could you spell out the relevant URL so that we can look at it? The way to avoid the abuse filter is to spell it out as something dot something, rather than with the physical dot. @Shawarman86, I can add it. I set up a sub-section for you at Toronto#Jerk chicken. Feel free to correct and expand that. If it squawks at you again, please try to copy and paste the exact wording of the error messages. In the meantime, if it's really choking on "jerk", you might be able to get around it by typing something like "jrk chicken" instead. Someone else can clean up the typo if necessary.

Blocks are much more common for URLs than for words, so if you were going to add any links, try adding everything except the link first, and make a second edit to add the link(s). WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:34, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding the section -- for whatever reason, I keep getting this error message:

For the other regulars in this discussion – we may want to give this filter (and others) more specific names and descriptions than just "Disallowed" – maybe we can add advice to ask for help at the arrivals lounge, so that it's obvious to new users what to do when the filter gives a false positive. It's also a good idea for us to check the abuse filter logs regularly and see if false positives are showing up, so we can improve the filters to minimize the impact on good-faith contributors. —Granger (talk · contribs) 20:08, 9 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes a specific filter name is unwanted/undiplomatic, but in such cases I suggest adding a "code" that will make it easier to find. It could be something like "Disallowed (code 1234)", if you wanted to keep "disallowed".

If the user asks, as in this case, you can check their contributions page. It has a link to their entries in the "abuse filter" log, which show the filter numbers. No need to tell opaque codes to the user. –LPfi (talk) 06:40, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copy Wikivoyage page from German to English

Is it ok to copy an existing Wikivoyage page that exists for German, into the English section?

Is there an easy / automated way to do that with automatic first round translation, that would then be edited manually?

For example I want to create the English version of this: Nordstrand – Reiseführer auf Wikivoyage

If there is no article at Wikivoyage in English and the page fits the region structure, then just go ahead. You could either work in a personal sandbox (such as User:Robvann/Nordstrand) until it is translated, or start with an outline and add content as you get it translated. If the article exists, then you need to be a bit more carefully, so that you don't destroy existing work. There is a translation tool, but I didn't like it over at Wikipedia and I assume it doesn't know about the template differences across language versions. I don't remember how to activate it. Remember to attribute the German version in some way, perhaps best in the edit summaries, or the first and last of them (such as: "starting translation from ..." and "done translating"). –LPfi (talk) 08:40, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If there is a problem with the region structure, then some more thinking is needed. For Nordstrand, look at North Sea Coast (Schleswig-Holstein) and check whether just adding a link to the new article there makes sense. If not, you might want to discuss how to deal with it, or at least make very clear how the new article relates to the neighbours and the region, to allow others to fix it. –LPfi (talk) 08:51, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
