Template:Spaced en dash

This template inserts "&nbsp;– ", i.e. an en dash with spaces on each side, with a line wrap before the dash prevented. Perhaps we don't want dashes to begin a new line, but browsers should be smart enough to follow such an easy rule. It seems they don't, but for us to do something about it, we should use this template for a significant proportion of dashes on the site (it is now used in a dozen articles, and on a few other pages). To educate our editors to do that is in no way worth the effort, and the wikitext gets really confusing or awkward:

"[...] by locals{{snd}} although [...]"
"[...] by locals{{spaced en dash}} although [...]"

We try to keep templates at a minimum to keep editing simple, and this is really a textbook example of why we don't want excess template use.

  • Neutral but leaning keep. This is a technically banal template that doesn't require any maintenance. Need for maintenance is one of the reasons why template usage is kept at a minimum on a project of this size: Things should be technically simple and robust. But this template is already that. I've used it in some articles which is probably where most of its usage comes from. This template doesn't make editing any more complicated as it's entirely optional. When it is used it creates a nice aesthetic effect, and when it isn't, that's fine too. Uniformity is not required. If consensus develops more strongly toward deletion I will remove this template from all the articles myself, so please ping me about that. Alalch E. (talk) 23:47, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Using it is not difficult for those who use it, but it is confusing for those editing the article afterwards. I had to look it up when I tried to copy edit an article. Is it a template that affects the article elsewhere? An infobox template would make a box in the margin even when placed in the middle of a paragraph, which happens, is this something similar? Does it insert some kind of standard phrasing? I repeat my example: "by locals{{snd}} although". While copy editing the wikitext I might think that a comma is needed between "locals" and "although" – I have no idea that there already is a dash there. Unless I knew how to look the templates up, I would probably leave the template alone and place the comma after it or give up on that paragraph. –LPfi (talk) 08:26, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ugh. We had "hyphen versus dash" wars at en.wp some years back,and the only thought that went through my mind throughout the whole thing was that the vast majority of English speakers do not know the difference, and further, do not care. Anyhoo, I also find this sort of template more confusing than useful, novice editors will certainly not know what to do if they find it when editing a page.
