Formatting and language conventions

For articles about Bahrain, please use the 12-hour clock to show times, e.g. 9AM-noon and 6PM-midnight.

Please show prices in this format: BD100 and not BHD 100.

Please use British spelling (colour, travelled, centre, realise, analogue, programme, defence).

For future reference the Project:CIA World Factbook 2002 import can be found at Talk:Bahrain/CIA World Factbook 2002 import.

Stay Safe edit

The stay safe section needs to be edited. I mean it says demonstrations can occur at any time that can happen any where the US switzerland I mean anywhere why should Bahrain be singled out

Regions edit

Who thought regionalising Bahrain was a good idea? The country is 30 miles long, most of it bare rock and sand. We have two city articles (one empty), that's it. This needs a big re-think and the minor content that is in the five regional articles can mostly be merged back into the main country article. To make it worse, the existing Manama region article is actually the Manama city article. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 01:22, 10 January 2010 (EST)

Agreed. Merge & redirect to Bahrain looks to be the appropriate course. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 03:07, 10 January 2010 (EST)

Currency, time and spelling conventions edit

Below is a proposed infobox to let readers know which formatting conventions to use in Wikivoyage articles. Do you agree with these proposals? If you have direct knowledge of what is most commonly used in the country, please let us know. Ground Zero (talk) 22:50, 4 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Moved to the top of this page. Ground Zero (talk) 04:07, 28 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Under 'Respect' edit

"People of the opposite sex have been arrested for kissing in public and it is just not socially accepted." What sex would that be? —The preceding comment was added by 77.124.123.105 (talkcontribs)

I think it means "Opposite-sex couples" - in other words, a man and a woman arrested for kissing each other in public. I'll try to rephrase it more clearly. —Granger (talk · contribs) 13:05, 16 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Alternative banner for this article? edit

Banner currently used in this article

Suggested new alternative banner

I have previously created an alternative banner for this article (which was initially created for the parallel article at the Hebrew Wikivoyage, but I decided to suggest we'll use it here at the English Wikivoyage article as well). Which banner do you prefer that we'll use on the top of this article? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 13:31, 13 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Prefer the current banner, which is more visually distinctive. Vaticidalprophet (talk) 14:51, 13 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Do you guys want to discourage people from traveling to Bahrain? The fort isn't "misleading" if people can visit it. If a smoggy city is the only thing I can visit on an island, do you think I'll rush over there? Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:22, 13 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Smoggy perhaps isn't, but I think the fort isn't the reason someone is going to visit Bahrain. Leaderboard (talk) 19:35, 13 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Entering fake details for free wifi edit

@Leaderboard:, is this legal? Since if it isn't legal, then unfortunately it has to be removed per the Wikivoyage:Illegal activities policy, but if it is, then I'll uncover the invisible text. If it is legal, then I'll uncover the text. (also even if it is unethical, it's allowed.) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 03:10, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@SHB2000: I mean, it's just as entering a generic phone number and name... Leaderboard (talk) 06:00, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Since it's not illegal, I'll uncover it. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 06:09, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Spelling edit

See User talk:Leaderboard#Spelling used in Bahrain. Leaderboard has confirmed that British spelling is used in Bahrain, and even Bahrain articles all use British spelling here, not American. So I'm proposing to change it to British from American. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:45, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

If @Leaderboard: has personal experience with Bahrain, I'd want to go with that. I checked a few websites, and have found that there isn't consistency. Gulf Daily News Online and Gulf News use UK spelling, while the Government of Bahrain website uses US spelling (-ize, labor, license as a noun). Ground Zero (talk) 11:19, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
  Done SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 11:45, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Some websites also seem to use Canadian spelling. Including the main Bahrain page (-our, not -or, but -ize, not -ise). SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 11:46, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
I am quite sure that's not intentional. There is no particular connection between Bahrain and Canada. We shouldn't be surprised that people who are writing English as a second language don't use consistent spelling. Ground Zero (talk) 12:03, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Very true. I often don't think that because when writing in French, I only write in French French, and the next two major dialects (CA, BL) are nowhere near popular internationally. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 12:17, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
