Shakey's Pizza and Jollibee photos edit

Hi, everyone. These are business photos. Do they fall within our exception policies? Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:02, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

There is an exception for images that are meant to be illustrative of the type of business establishment in a certain region but I do take your point so I will delete the picture of the new Robinson's Place (even though Dumagetenos are inordinately proud of it) and amend the captions of the other two. I do think it's important to have these photos, since otherwise some folks from Manila, never mind New York think it's all sari-sari shops and Nipa huts in the "provinces" -- Alice 03:30, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
If you think it's important to have those photos, maybe they should all remain in the article, with appropriate captions explaining how these businesses are particularly notable locally. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:42, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
One deletion has been made now and the two captions amended to make general points about armed guards and ransom kidnappings, etc. Happy? -- Alice 03:52, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
I didn't have a specific goal in mind; I just thought this should be discussed, which is why I asked a question. How do you feel about this? Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:24, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have a guilty feeling that I've been naughty but a proprietorial interest in seeing the images remain (proprietorial not in the sense I have a personal or family business connection to Robinson's or Shakey's or Jollibee's, just in the sense that Dumaguete is really one of the nicest, friendliest and cleanest little provincial towns I've ever visited in the Philippines and I'd like to encourage more people to enjoy a few days there.) -- Alice 04:35, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
And with that comment, you probably have. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:48, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I just took out the Joillibee's photo; the point about armed guards is now made under Dumaguete#Stay_safe. Pashley (talk)
The comment above is from a few months ago. The Shakey's photo is now gone too, since that location seems to have closed. Pashley (talk) 15:29, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Beach resort? edit

We currently have a listing in this article for "Monarch Sands Beach Resort" which says it is "an hour from Dumaguete airport". On the map, it is miles from Dumaguete but quite near Siaton and the address says Siaton.

I want to move it to Siaton, but that article is very much a stub so I'm checking here first to see if anyone has a better idea. Pashley (talk) 02:19, 21 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

There's already a stubby entry for that resort in the Siaton article. I don't think there's a better option than merging any useful information there. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:28, 21 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've plunged ahead and made the change. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:56, 21 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Guide? edit

I'm in Dumaguete, probably staying a couple of months (it sure beats a Canadian winter!), have done some work on the article, will likely do more. I just promoted it from Outline to Usable. What does it need to get to Guide or Star? It might make a good DotM about a year from now. Pashley (talk) 23:56, 10 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I hope you got a good deal on a rental. Don't forget your hard hat if you go outside on Hogmanay... --Ttcf (talk) 08:02, 11 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Lucky you, Pashley :-) I'd say the article is already pretty close to guide, as it seems most of the info one needs is just there. Good candidate for a feature indeed. It needs a banner, of course, and there are still some coordinates missing. Listings like the post office and tourist office should have proper addresses and opening times. Maybe you could give a more convincing understanding of why this town is popular with travellers, in the intro. Make it more... appealing. Also, just looking around on other websites, it seems that Dumaguete is a popular base for diving. I understand that this might not take place in Dumaguete, but if diving is one of the reasons why people base themselves here, it should be mentioned more explicitly in the intro and in "do". If there are so many bars, there should ideally be a few more good picks in the Drink section. Some one-liners should be added to the "go next" section. Just a few thoughts - I think the article is already great. Enjoy your time! JuliasTravels (talk) 08:37, 11 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
I now think it is at guide, though not all the suggestions above have been dealt with. However, I'll leave it to others to decide when to actually promote it. Pashley (talk) 10:41, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
I agree, so I did. JuliasTravels (talk) 11:36, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Go next edit

I am about to edit this section, get rid of the entries with no details given, so I am preserving them here:

  • Casaroro Falls
  • Forest Camp
  • Japanese Shrine
  • Apo Island - Ideal for divers.
  • Bais City for Dolphin and Whale Watching
  • Lake Balinsasayao
  • Lake Balanan
  • Mabinay Caves
  • Villa Merced

I will cut it to just the two with links. Pashley (talk) 04:01, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

That would be a pity. Apart from Villa Merced & the Japanese Shrine, they make good day trips from DGT. If you tell me where you're staying, I'll email a friend from Bais to visit you and give you the detail so you can flesh things out. Even if you don't wish to avail of that opportunity in the next couple of weeks, if you let the entries stand, I can ask her to add some detail and then copy edit. --Ttcf (talk) 06:38, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Already gone, but of course any of them can be restored if anyone knows enough to add a good one-line description. Are some near Bais? if so, maybe add them in that article.
I'll pass on meeting your friend, I think. Pashley (talk) 07:20, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
You may well bump into her by accident - Dgt's a very small place with an effective grapevine (as you've probably found out by now).
Certainly the Mabinay caves are probably best visited from Bais, but the Casaroro Falls and the Forest Camp are definitely excursions from Dgt. Lake Balinsasayao and the volcanic area are much closer and have better access from Dgt, while Lake Balanan, while still deserving of a brief mention in the "Go next" section of Dgt, is probably best given a detailed exposition in the stub Siaton article. --Ttcf (talk) 08:13, 16 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
There is currently stuff about Mount Talinis at Dumaguete#Do but w:Mount Talinis says it is in Valencia. It also says the twin lakes park is part of the volcano complex, but w:Lake Balinsasayao says the lake is in Sibulan. How should this be handled? Pashley (talk) 14:23, 23 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
I moved all this stuff to Do or See, since it is not really Go Next, and rewrote much of it. Comment? Pashley (talk) 12:19, 24 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Deletions edit

Guy Hall, built in 1918, was one of the buildings occupied by Japanese troops during World War II

I just took out this text "Other places to visit include Maxino College in Barangay Bagacay and Maranatha Full Gospel Church (Sunday morning)." since it seemed pointless to me; the descriptions lack detail & the places do not seem interesting. I am preserving it here in case someone wants to put it back. If you do, please create listings and add detail. Pashley (talk) 12:16, 24 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I also removed this from the Mount Talinis part "Tourists may avail of the services of local guides who can arrange everything including transportation, food and porter. All-inclusive trek ₱5,000/group of 3." It seemed useless because it does not say where to find guides or indicate how long these treks are or how difficult. Pashley (talk) 12:33, 24 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Also the Guy Hall photo; it is not listed as a sight to see and we already have two photos of Silliman University buildings.

And a rather nice photo of a waterfall which is already used at Valencia_(Negros_Oriental)#See. Should it be here as well, or even instead, since many visitors are likely to reach it on day trips from Dumaguete? Pashley (talk) 04:53, 25 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

And this:

  • Dumaguete Review hosts detailed reviews of musicians, etc. and, because there are no fees relating to creating or positioning of a listing and visitor ratings and comments are encouraged, it is a very useful resource for travellers who may not know the local scene.

It has some listings of bands, but none are recent and there are almost no reviews. Utterly useless, IMHO. Pashley (talk) 16:55, 26 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

And this, from the Understand section:

Dinanguet was one of the first names of the settlements that were incorporated into the parish of Tanjay in 1590. It was only when it became a separate parish in 1620 that its name was changed.

I cannot see that this info is of any interest or value to a traveller. Pashley (talk) 15:52, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

I removed references to Lilo-an in the discussion of ferries to Sibulan. w:Liloan, Cebu shows that town as in Metro Cebu, north of Cebu City. Am I missing something here? Pashley (talk) 03:14, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

I was missing something; there's now a disambig page at Liloan. Pashley (talk) 15:29, 18 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Comment, anyone? edit

The first paragraph in Get in/By air now reads:

Cebu Pacific has flights from both Manila and Cebu, and Philippine Airlines has flights from Manila. Cebu used to be by far and away the more pleasant airport to arrive at with an international connection (especially if travelling by Qatar or Silkair) but the corrupt and unfriendly attitude of Manila officials has diminished over the past year and Cebu Pacific now has most international arrivals and domestic departures from the modern and relatively efficient Terminal 3 in Manila. If you have an overnight connection in Manila, allow plenty of time to actually enter the airport and begin baggage check-in since the security controls to actually enter each terminal sometimes cause very long queues to form!

I wrote the first sentence & an anon user added the rest. He or she has a point; I'd have just said "Cebu is much easier", but I may be out of date. However, I have the feeling this is overstated and/or does not belong in the Dumaguete article but rather in Philippines#Get in. I'd like to "fix" it, but have little idea how. I almost reverted the edit as irrelevant, but am posting here instead.

Other opinions? Pashley (talk) 10:11, 3 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

It should be fairly easy to check if Cebu Pacific now indeed has most international arrivals at Manila, or not? If so, then that info seems relevant to me. I'd put the possible shift in a more positive turn though -increased service level or something, rather than diminished corruption- unless this is a generally accepted statement. I don't know if the cueing is any less in other Phillipines destinations? In any case, I must say a bit of extra warning on such things never bothers me, as I typically don't read the full country article if I'm only flying in to a specific destination for a week or so. JuliasTravels (talk) 19:31, 3 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
My guess is that s/he meant to say that most international arrival and domestic departures operated by Cebu Pacific use Terminal 3 and did not intend to say which airline had the most international arrivals (which info is pretty irrelevant for non-airline buffs). He or she is spot on about corruption. Add nepotism and a money politics presidential system bequeathed by our erstwhile colonial masters and you get the main reason why the most English speaking and Christian country in Asia has been for decades an economic basket case. Things have recently improved drastically and travellers need to be made aware of that. Even more important is the queuing tip. Travellers risk losing both time and money if they think they can just waltz into the terminal and check-in like most other airports. I've lost count of the number of times baggage has been off-loaded on my flights because passengers never made it inside the terminal in time. Most international travellers will be completely unaware that at busy times they need to set aside 40-110 minutes just to enter the terminal and join the check-in queue! --180.191.105.141 10:10, 4 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
I moved the text up into the intro to Get in rather than Get in/By air and edited it. Comments? Pashley (talk) 15:16, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Has Manila Terminal 3 improved to now compete with Cebu Mactan International? edit

I think so, and I do listen to what passengers say and don't just always use the VIP/Crew/Diplomatic lane.

Here are some supporting opinions: in "Worst Airports of 2014" Manila drops from pole to fourth position - admittedly a minority perspective but still a valid stance "Consider this a firm recommendation to do all that you can to fly on airlines that use Terminal 3 rather than Terminal 1", Sunstar reports Representative Teddy Casiño filing House Resolution 1836 directing the House Committee on Transportation to conduct an investigation, in aid of legislation, on the problems besetting the NAIA after reports it's "in bad shape, overcrowded, and has unfriendly staff... also claimed airport workers took bribes and were corrupt" and "Airport taxes are collected, but the money does not seem to go towards the betterment of the airport", Skytrax passenger reviews, "The inanity and stupidity of the Department of Tourism – more fun in the Philippines, indeed", [http://www.philstar.com/travel-and-tourism/645609/villar-seeks-probe-airports this feud between customs officials and foreign carriers has now been resolved by Presidential intervention..., Facebook page: Corrupt Philippine Immigration Officers, for those who understand Tagalog, the comments here are interesting, --180.191.108.13 12:07, 7 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Merge in nearby towns? edit

There is discussion at Talk:Sibulan of whether various articles on nearby towns which are more-or-less suburbs of Dumaguete should be merged into this one. Pashley (talk) 15:07, 21 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

I merged in Sibulan & Valencia. Should Bacong or Dauin be done too? Pashley (talk) 04:20, 6 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I frankly have no idea. What are the pros and cons? Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:51, 6 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
If we merge Dauin, we should do Bacong too since it is between D City & Dauin. Beyond that, I'm not sure.
Pro: we'd get rid of two stub articles, expand Duma a bit. Dauin is suburb-ish; people live there but work in Duma, or come in to shop or drink. Con: Dauin already has listings for three dive resorts & I think more could be added. Should the article be kept so as not to mix those in with the many sleep listings we already have in Duma? Pashley (talk) 13:55, 6 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I went ahead & merged Bacong. I left Dauin out for reasons above.Pashley (talk) 02:15, 26 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
There is now discussion at Talk:San Jose (Negros Oriental) of merging in that town & Amlan (Negros Oriental). I'm inclined to oppose, but not certain. If we do merge Amlan, we should do San Jose too since it is between A & the city. Pashley (talk) 19:46, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

New place on Rizal edit

As of Feb 2015, most of the space between Casablanca and Why Not? was a construction project nearing completion, a two-storey building with a lot of frontage on the boulevard and some patio space on both levels. It looks as though it will be retail, restaurants or a mix, so Buy and/or Eat sections may need updating when it opens. Pashley (talk) 02:11, 25 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

There was also a sign at Silliman U saying a new Portal East building is coming. Presumably it will be largely commercial like the existing Portal West so we may need updates there too. As of Feb, construction had not started. Pashley (talk) 11:42, 29 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I am back in Duma & will be updating the article. Portal East is under construction now. New one on Rizal is open; I do not have details yet. Pashley (talk) 04:14, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Updates done. New complex is called Paseo Perdices. Pashley (talk) 15:35, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I am back again. Portal East is still under construction. Some progress has been made since spring, but it does not look near completion. Pashley (talk) 02:44, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Which protestants? edit

Our caption says the university church is Episcopalian (Anglican) but w:Horace Silliman says he was an active Presbyterian. Is one of these in error? Is the story more complicated as the uni's page for the church seems to indicate? Pashley (talk) 14:10, 3 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I changed it to just "a protestant church", which is probably not the best solution but is at least accurate. Pashley (talk) 00:15, 6 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Protestant should be capitalized, so I did that. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:39, 6 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
If you actually talk to the ministers and congregation, they see themselves as being thoroughly ecumenical rather than protesting or counteracting the thoroughly dominant Roman Catholicism of the Philippines. 175.138.99.217 13:47, 6 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
I don't see how that makes them non-Protestant. To be Roman Catholic, they'd have to be part of a hierarchy that swears allegiance to the Pope. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:41, 6 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
I edited it. Comments? Pashley (talk) 11:45, 29 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Seems totally fine. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:08, 29 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Star? edit

It looks to me like this article is now close to Star status.

Only one thing I know should be added; there is a sign as you leave the ferry terminal informing people about the anti-smoking bylaw, and a photo of that would go nicely in Dumaguete#Smoking. I meant to take such a shot but forgot.

Would anyone care to nominate it? Or make suggestions for what is needed before that? Or better yet, make contributions that would get it there? Pashley (talk) 00:40, 16 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I now think it needs more coverage outside downtown before it might be a star. Pashley (talk) 15:41, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

New airport? edit

I ran across a real estate ad for a property in Bacong that said it was near "the new airport". A quick web search gives no solid confirmation, but does show some news stories about it as a possibility.

Does anyone know more? Pashley (talk) 11:03, 1 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

This looks promising. Can anyone confirm? Pashley (talk) 19:32, 22 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Cang's location edit

We show this department store, I think correctly, on E Rovira but the underlying OSM map has a Cang's at the corner of Maria Cristina & San Jose. Are there two locations? Is one location wrong or out of date? Pashley (talk) 00:32, 14 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have no clue, but I'd be tempted to use the address listed on their own pages. Their Facebook page seems active. JuliasTravels (talk) 17:12, 14 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
It's not impossible that the location of a sight or business is wrong on the OSM maps. I now and then have gone on coordinate adding sprees and through that noticed that at least one place in ten is placed at least somewhat off the real location. The estabilshment's own site, Fb page, Google Maps or such should be more trustworthy. ϒpsilon (talk) 17:39, 14 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Detouting edit

Pashley, you probably noticed that a tout just added a restaurant to the article — three times. Do you by chance know this place and in which category it should be listed (Drink, Eat/Budget, Eat/Mid range)? Of course, the language also needs to be toned down in the listing. ϒpsilon (talk) 12:19, 14 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

I removed the two entries in Eat, and left the one in Drink. ϒpsilon (talk) 12:42, 14 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
I actually posted on their facebook page suggesting they add themselves since I've heard the place is rather good. I've now moved the listing & de-touted it some. I think it fits where it is, under Dumaguete#Drink. Pashley (talk) 13:30, 14 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Removed some text edit

These places are not yet open so I removed the listings. Saving here in case we want to restore later:

  • City Mall, Dumaguete Bacolod Road. 8am-8pm. soon to open a new mall in Dumaguete. low price.
  • Puregold Supermarket. soon to open in Dumaguete. the 2nd biggest supermarket group in the Philippines with over 300 stores.

Without more detail, I'm not sure these will be worth restoring, even when they open. Pashley (talk) 01:55, 17 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Terror threat? edit

There are some indicators of risk:

On the other hand, I'm in Dumaguete & have seen nothing untoward except more police & more of them with automatic weapons.

What warnings do we need & do they go here or in some higher-level article, perhaps Central Visayas? Pashley (talk) 13:00, 13 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada have issued new warnings; see Talk:Negros#Need a warning?. Pashley (talk) 12:36, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Removed some listings edit

Both these places are gone. Part of the building is undergoing renovations & has a sign about a future coffee shop; the other part has "Commercial Space For Rent" signs. Saving deleted listings here:

  • 1 Coco Amigos (Rizal Boulevard), +63 35 226 1207. Mexican restaurant with very nice décor; the place is enormous and can easily accommodate large groups. Most of the Mexican food is mediocre, though the chili is good; European items like the schnitzel or German-style potato salad are better. Milkshakes are very good, smaller and cheaper than elsewhere on the boulevard. There are two patio areas, smoking and non-smoking, with live music out on the patios on Friday and Saturday evenings. Service is often slow, especially on the smoking patio; you may need to go inside the restaurant and prompt them to send a waitress.
  • Duma Seafood Restaurant (on the second floor, above Coco Amigos). Large.

Coco Amigos at least may reappear. It was busy, looked like it was making money & the company is large; it also has a hotel in Duma & resorts on Siquijor & Apo Island, so maybe it has money to set a new place up. Pashley (talk) 02:52, 27 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

This one is also gone. I'm told the place has been renovated & re-opened with the same chef but a different name & menu (more Filipino dishes) and is often extremely busy. Save listing here in case parts apply to new place. Pashley (talk) 05:25, 18 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • 2 Café 4tea2, 145 Bantayan Avenue (faces Hibbard, a bit south of Rovira), +63 35 422 4242. 08:00-22:00. Russian chef, but a fairly eclectic menu. Several good dishes — Russian dumplings or pancakes, chicken curry, spare ribs — in the ₱80-150 range. Enormous serving of fish & chips, ₱250. Many types of tea; milk shakes at ₱115 are large and good. All-you-can-eat buffet on Saturday evening, ₱290

Flights to Clark? edit

Clark-Dumaguete flights to start in June The paper attributes this to the closure of Boracay, hence a possible surge in tourism to Duma. Pashley (talk) 05:43, 21 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone know if these have started? The article currently says they are "due to start in June" which seems a bit odd to say in July. Pashley (talk) 15:25, 1 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Removed restaurants edit

Both of these are closed now & their signs are gone. Lindai's looks like it is being renovated. Pashley (talk) 05:50, 4 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • 3 Blue Monkey Grill (corner of Rizal and Silliman). A large place with outdoor tables (not all with shelter if it rains) serving beverages and barbecue to a mostly Filipino crowd. The satay-like pork BBQ sticks are great. Live music on weekends.
  • 4 Lindai's Buffet, Noblefranca St (just off Perdices). All-you-can-eat buffet of Filipino food. ₱199.

Time formatting edit

Does the Philippines use a 12&hr clock (7PM) or a 24-hr clock (19:00)? This article uses both formats, which is kind of confusing. We really should just use one format per article (or really, per country). Ground Zero (talk) 10:07, 4 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Bogart's is gone edit

I removed this.

  • 5 Bogart's Bar, 48 Rizal Blvd, +63 917 622 0700. M-Sa 8AM-2AM, Su 4PM-2AM. Small and plain compared to other places, with no a/c but many fans. Owners are an Austrian/Filipina couple, and the menu is mostly European. There are many expatriate customers, including a lot of German speakers and Scandinavians. Food is excellent and they have some good European beers as well as the usual Filipino fare. Their coffee and milkshakes are OK, but nothing special. Free fast WiFi.

Left this for now. Does anyone know if it still exists?

    • Japanese place (down a hallway beside Bogart's). Nice decor, sake and other Japanese drinks.

Boo hoo. Bogart's was my favourite bar. Pashley (talk) 00:08, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
