Removed provinces edit

I removed the provinces, I don't see any added value for travellers -- (WT-en) Ronald 22:19, 25 Nov 2005 (EST)

Provinces edit

Chimborazo not a city edit

Chimborazo was listed as a city. There is a province called Chimborazo, but the city which is "host" to the mountain is Riobamba. --pjt33

English-language newspapers edit

I managed to buy the Miami Herald from a small street news-stand in Riobamba (by Correos). Was this exceptional, or should mention of the possibility of buying English-language newspapers in the street be added? --pjt33

ATMs edit

On the use of automated teller machines: I was part of a large group, and we had different (UK) banks. Most of us found that we couldn't make withdrawals from all banks, and which banks we could and could not use varied between us, although in each case a network universally worked or didn't. For example, I could withdraw from any Banco de Guayaquil machine, but never from a Banco de Pichincha machine. Therefore be prepared to try two or three ATMs in order to find one which works.

I added this info to article, as I agree and think it is important to travellers. --(WT-en) Fridday

Water edit

I deleted the price given for water ($0.25 / bottle) because, obviously, it depends on the size of the bottle. A 5 litre bottle is typically about $1, and a 25 litre bottle $2.50, although for the latter you may also have a pay a deposit on the bottle.

Visas edit

Should information regarding visas to enter the country be added? I have found it hard to find exact information(accept at the consulates themselves) regarding the documents to bring for the various visas.71.79.241.58 08:05, 12 September 2006 (EDT) No visa needed to enter the country

Regions edit

The regions used currently are quite a mess.. I d be willing to sort these

What we have right now is :

Could that be used as regions ? Three regions only for mainland Ecuador seems few.. I ll look for a list of the departments and a map so we can sort them out precisely.

(WT-en) Rafcha 16:24, 27 October 2009 (EDT)

Here are a list of provinces with the capital and proposed region :
1 Azuay Cuenca Andean Highlands (Ecuador)
2 Bolívar Guaranda Coastal Lowlands (Ecuador)

10 Guayas Guayaquil Coastal Lowlands (Ecuador)
11 Imbabura Ibarra Andean Highlands (Ecuador)
12 Loja Loja Andean Highlands (Ecuador)
13 Los Ríos Babahoyo Coastal Lowlands (Ecuador)
14 Manabí Portoviejo Coastal Lowlands (Ecuador)

22 Sucumbíos Nueva Loja Amazon (Ecuador)
23 Tungurahua Ambato Andean Highlands (Ecuador)
24 Zamora-Chinchipe Zamora Amazon (Ecuador)

To sum up :

I ll wait for some feedback and then sort the articles using these categories(WT-en) Rafcha 17:15, 27 October 2009 (EDT)

I agree that three regions is fewer than what would be ideal, but I don't know anything about travel in Ecuador, so I won't be able to really help. Your sort, though, into the existing regions looks good to me. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:06, 27 October 2009 (EDT)
Oh, and that map can be uploaded to Shared—select the "GFDL and any Attribution-ShareAlike" option from the pulldown menu on the upload form. Here's a guide to the different licenses we allow for images. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:13, 27 October 2009 (EDT)
While doing the sorting i realize theses regions make the most sense, at least geographically. The only further division i could imagine is splitting the Andean region into north and south parts.(WT-en) Rafcha 18:28, 27 October 2009 (EDT)

Volcano eruption: do we need a warning box? edit

Ecuador declares volcano emergency Pashley (talk) 18:24, 16 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I think it would be good to have, at least in the Cotopaxi article. ϒpsilon (talk) 18:53, 16 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Cities (towns, etc.) in "Other destinations" edit

"Other destinations" means "other than cities (towns, hamlets, etc.)", such as parks, archeological sites, major waterfalls and the like (beaches qualify, too). Right now, this is the list of "Other destinations", other than "National parks":

  • Baeza - Gateway to the northern Oriente and up-and-coming mountain town -- still has sleepy small-town feel.
  • Canoa - Small beach town.
  • Esmeraldas - A lesser visited city to the north of some of the most popular beaches in Ecuador.
  • Guamote - A cosy and authentic Andean village though easy accessible.
  • Guaranda - A small Andean city famous for its Carnaval celebrations.
  • Mindo - Excellent bird watching in a cloud forest setting.
  • Montañita - World famous surfing beach and beach hangout.
  • Puerto López - Beautiful small ocean side city, access point for Machalilla National Park, and Isla de la Plata "Poor Man's Galapagos".
  • Puyo - Amazon rain forest town frequently destination of downhill bicycle rides from Baños.
  • Quilotoa Loop - An Andean travel route that encompasses Quilotoa volcanic crater lake, Zumbahua and Chugchilán. Quintessential Andean landscapes and cultural experiences.
  • Salinas - Beautiful beach and boardwalk, swamped with Guayaquileños during holidays.
  • Tena - Amazon rain forest town famous for some of the best white water rafting and kayaking in Latin America.
  • Vilcabamba - Popular for expats living and retiring, and famous for its legendary older inhabitants whom claim to have some of the longest lifespans in the world.

Without even looking at the articles, just based on the descriptions, the following should be removed, based on Wikivoyage guidelines:

Baeza (town), Canoa (town, although if its beach is made the "Other destination", that could work), Esmeraldas (city), Guamote (village), Guaranda (small city), Puerto López (city, although if the listing is for the coast or the island, it might work), Puyo (town), Tena (town, though maybe it could be listed purely as a center for rafting and kayaking). Vilcabamba seems clearly to be a town, too, based on the description that focuses on living and inhabitants.

Your opinions? Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:28, 10 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'm in the process of adding a lot of content for Baeza, having stayed here for a while and realized that it is a idden gem of Ecuador -- where would I link it from, if it doesn't belong here. I couldn't find the answer in the guidelines...maybe it is just that I'm a wiki newbie, apologies if so. Itinerant503 (talk) 20:39, 10 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

The easiest answer is that you'd link it from the article for the region it's a part of. Many places that are gems don't get linked from the national level. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:37, 11 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ho ho! So much information linked from the welcome message I received. And, "I couldn't find the answer in the guidelines," but only because I didn't really look. Thanks/sorry. Delete this thread if you like, Ikan. Itinerant503 (talk) 12:58, 11 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
No need to delete the thread. There are a lot of places in "Other destinations" that need discussion and possible deletion from this article, and it's not completely clear which ones. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:32, 11 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Any more comments? We really haven't resolved anything much here. Which of these places belong in an "Other (than cities [towns, villages, etc.]) destinations" and is there any overriding attraction that is more of a draw than the city itself in any of the other places, which could be mentioned as the destination instead of the city? Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:10, 17 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── 7 years later, have we decided yet? There are still 17 ODs in the article, so 5 have to go. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 01:35, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Current banner

New banner

I originally made this new banner for the article Latin America, but I ended up adding a different banner there, and I think this one would be better for Ecuador than the current nondescript green hills. Thoughts? —Granger (talk · contribs) 14:22, 28 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Seeing no comments for a few days, I've gone ahead and changed the banner. We can always change it back if someone objects. —Granger (talk · contribs) 20:14, 2 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Currency, time and spelling conventions edit

Below is a proposed infobox to let readers know which formatting conventions to use in Wikivoyage articles. Do you agree with these proposals? If you have direct knowledge of what is most commonly used in the country, please let us know. Ground Zero (talk) 13:58, 6 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Warning box edit

I understand the need for it, but given that it only affects a small part of the country, wouldn't it be better placed in Ecuador#Stay safe instead? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 11:42, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Good suggestion. I've moved it. Ground Zero (talk) 13:02, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
