Deletion
editOur standard welcome template already mentions "If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here." In which case, I don't see a good reason to keep using this template even for welcoming Wikipedians. Thoughts? --Saqib (talk) 09:27, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

And in lieu of Template:Welcome already providing several links for Wikipedia editors to read such as Wikivoyage:Welcome, Wikipedians, I have to agree that this template seems superfluous. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 10:12, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- Keep I think it doesn't hurt to greet someone already familiar with WP and show the main differences immediately. I quite like using it. Danapit (talk) 20:24, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
- Keep We do need to accept that our growth depends on successfully integrating users from sibling Wikimedia projects, who will already have wiki editing experience (so no need to explain MediaWiki to them) but will find the way we do things a bit strange compared to the meticulous footnotes and reliable secondary sources which go into an encyclopaedia. Possible edit
editInstead of "If you need help, take a look at Wikivoyage:Help, or else post a message in the travellers' pub or on my talk page," could we substitute "If you need help, take a look at Wikivoyage:Help, or else post a message in the travellers' pub or as a reply below"? I don't want to discourage people from posting on my user talk page, but I find it neater for new users to keep the thread on the same page. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:11, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I don't exactly agree. Communication with new users is always encouraged, and if they have a question for you, then they should ask on your talk page. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 21:13, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- How about at least adding "as a reply below or on my user talk page"? Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:33, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- That might be ideal. Being welcomed to somebody's own talk page may feel more personal and welcoming, while it may be easier and more effective for the user to use their own. –LPfi (talk) 06:08, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
- That works. I would prefer that. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:05, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
- Done. Thanks, guys. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:52, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
Where do I go to edit a template?
edit- Swept in from the pub
I'd like to edit subst:wikipedian, because I don't agree with inviting new users to my user talk page by default, not because that's bad but because I think it's more useful and probably easier for them to reply on their own user talk pages if they have a question. However, I can't find the page where the actual text of the template is. I think it's bizarre that it's so hard to find the place to edit templates, even for a user like me who's been on this site for over 15 years! Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:08, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- Check Template:Wikipedian. The text you want to edit is accessible by clicking the "edit" button, but isn't visible before clicking that button for some reason I'm not techie enough to know. Vidimian (talk) 13:23, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- P.S. I mean the larger "edit" button at the topmost row, not the smaller one on the corner of that blue box, which leads to nowhere. Vidimian (talk) 13:29, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- I finally figured out you meant the edit button above the article. Why are there two edit buttons on the page that don't work and send the editor to another page that has an "Edit template data" button that also doesn't show the text the template produces? Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:07, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- I started a thread on that template's talk page instead of making the edit; see Template talk:Wikipedian#Possible edit. Thanks again! Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:12, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- Ah yes, I couldn't find a way to clarify better and I noticed the third edit button just now. Vidimian (talk) 14:47, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- The edit buttons for the /doc subpage at enwiki are close to the words "Template documentation". That might make their purpose clearer. Compare the location of
[view] [edit] [history] [purge]
buttons in w:en:Template:Quote box vs our local Template:Wikipedian. - If folks would like the location changed, I'm willing to (try to) figure out how to do that (unless one of you already knows how). WhatamIdoing (talk) 14:59, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- I have no strong opinion on the placement of those links. For this kind of large template it is quite obvious that the small buttons are for the documentation page (the edit works for me, for editing the /doc page), only the template text is shown. Now it is. For some reason it was placed inside <includeonly> tags, explicitly making it invisible. Perhaps the author found it easier to have those tags there, as some constructs might give odd results on the template page. Where there is no text in the template itself to be shown, the edit buttons are more confusing, but the normal page-top edit link should still be clearly visible. Perhaps some line breaks could be placed in a <noinclude> to move down the documentation box in templates where this might be a problem? –LPfi (talk) 15:33, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
