Hello, Alexander Leisser! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here.--ϒpsilon (talk) 14:53, 8 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

First time on the english wikivoyage. Need help with first article. edit

Swept in from the pub

Hi wikivoyagers,

I write articles for the german wikivoyage. Mainly about countries I visited during a cycling trip from Norway to South africa. I have an article about cycling through the Western Sahara which I started to translate in english. Styles and templates are different in the englisch wikivoyage. Could someone help or point me in the right direction? —The preceding comment was added by Alexander Leisser (talkcontribs)

Welcome! We do indeed have a different style, for example when it comes to setup of listings and how images are placed in the article. Wikivoyage:Itineraries and the articles listed in that guideline's See also section can be useful.
However in practice we don't really have one single layout for itineraries, for instance Oregon Trail, King's Road (Finland), Trans-Siberian Railway, Ruta del Tránsito, Natchez Trace Parkway, Breaking Bad Tour, Ad's Path, and Golan Trail are all so good they will or have been featured on the Main Page and they are all slightly different. You can open these and have a look at the wikicode. Happy editing! --ϒpsilon (talk) 15:24, 8 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Shameless plug for my own previously-featured-on-the-Main-Page itinerary, Historic Churches of Buffalo's East Side. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 15:44, 8 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so long for your help!

I translated most of the article and cleaned up the templates so far. Can I publish the article? Do you have suggestions for the title? (Cycling the Western Sahara?) Alexander Leisser (talk) 05:53, 11 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Request for your help edit

I just saw your post on the Traveller's pub regarding your desire to create english WV pages. A few posts below yours is my request for help regarding a page that exists on german WV ("New page on the Alpi Di Siusi - whats the best approach?"). Can you help? I'm happy to take a first draft of the page, and leave the fixing of the auto-translate silliness upto you. Or perhaps you can make the first draft, and I can fix the content where you have questions. Marvin The Paranoid (talk) 00:06, 10 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Marvin, I don't have a perfect solution. My approach:

  • I copied the german article into my sandbox
  • Cleaned up the templates. Search and replace functions (with regex pattern) can help.
    • Vcard to listing|See|Go|... and convert all geolocations to decimal degrees.
    • there are no language templates (like arabic, french, ...) in the english wv
    • no wikidata template to extract data in en.wv
  • I used google translate to get a first working english version which I cleaned up afterwards.

Great work! To cycle from Norway to Southafrica is really special. I think not many people have the guts to do that. Renek78 (talk) 21:06, 10 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
