Im Schiffchen

@ThunderingTyphoons!, Hobbitschuster, Mx. Granger: I think we can delete this listing. We have listings for other restaurants. Would we list a restaurant that says that Black people are not welcome? Or one that says that Jews are not welcome? I hope not. There is no apology on the restaurant's website, so I don't think they get why this is a big deal. Ground Zero (talk) 16:16, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

I see your point, but the traveller comes first; this is a popular and acclaimed restaurant with apparently high quality food, so travellers will hear about it from elsewhere but may not, if they don't see it here, know about this incident. People should decide for themselves whether they eat there or not, and without knowing the facts, the choice isn't a free one.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:27, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
When did they say that? This Jew, who had a pleasant meal there several years ago, is quite disappointed and upset to hear this. However, a place where Goethe was a regular and which many other famous cultural figures patronized is IMO too historically important to be delisted, even if the quality of their food and drinks declines at some point. I think we have no real choice in this situation but to maintain the listing and mention the bigotry, and in this kind of case, I think we should make an exception to our usual external links policy and include at least one link to a respected news source. If I recall our "avoid negative reviews" policy correctly, this is almost a textbook example of when to include a "negative review" - the place is well known, might even meet wikipedia "notability criteria", but there is a reason not to go there which we should tell our readers. And I also like Ikan's proposal to include a link or several to reputable media covering the issue. Hobbitschuster (talk) 18:06, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Does anyone remember what we did a year or two ago with the listing of a hotel and bar somewhere in northern central US (Montana?) that didn't want Native American patrons? Some users thought we should keep it with a warning, others that we should delete it. --Ypsilon (talk) 18:24, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm neutral on whether to keep the listing or not, but if we do keep it, we need to clarify that the chef later denounced the apparent meaning of his Facebook post, and Chinese travellers are in fact still permitted to eat there. This is important to know for any Chinese travellers who do want to visit the restaurant despite the incident. —Granger (talk · contribs) 22:50, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
It looks like I am the righteous minority of one here. Granger's edit is worth including since the majority is in favour of keeping the listing. Ground Zero (talk) 22:54, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
By the way, @Ground Zero: the ping above didn't work—I only saw this discussion because I happened to look at this talk page. I believe pinging only works if you add your signature in the same edit that you use to add the ping. —Granger (talk · contribs) 22:55, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Mx. Granger: that's inconvenient, but good to know. Thanks. Ground Zero (talk) 22:59, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm quite certain that whatever chef thinks, a restaurant cannot refuse service to people based on their nationality or ethnicity in Germany. The restaurant clarifying that they "allow" Chinese customers, when those customers' rights are protected by the law, is the same as if it put out a statement saying they "allow" kids to talk at the table, or as me saying I "allow" Ground Zero to comment on this discussion. It's utter fatuous nonsense and shows, as GZ said, they don't get it at all.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 23:16, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

[undent] If they'd rather not serve Chinese people, they could be pretty unfriendly to them and have that chalked up to the blunt style of service one often encounters in Germany, rather than illegal discrimination. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:24, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

(edit conflict) Readers may not know that Germany has that law, and even where discrimination is outlawed it is sometimes still practiced. Some restaurants in multiple countries have been refusing service to Chinese customers this year; it's useful for travellers to clarify that, despite the Facebook post, this restaurant isn't actually one of them. —Granger (talk · contribs) 23:25, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
None of this is to defend the chef, of course. I'm just saying that in the listing we should aim to give readers as much clarity as feasible about whether or not they will be refused service. —Granger (talk · contribs) 23:31, 25 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Is this article ready for Dotm? Or is something missing? /Yvwv (talk) 13:22, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Many of the listings were added before 2015. Are they still open? Ground Zero (talk) 21:05, 17 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
