edit<!--Cities and Other destinations lists are limited to 9 items. Please first discuss proposed changes.--> Hello what is it I am frist time to use the apps I am Andy218.250.228.154
- Hello, this is a problem indeed, I created this issue to track it: https://code.google.com/p/oxygenguide/issues/detail?id=40 Thanks for your feedback! Nicolas1981 (talk) 06:44, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
Destination link opens inside the map's IFrame

Sorry to be abstruse, Nicolas, but what and where is this "Destinations" button, please? --W. Franke-mailtalk 13:38, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
- It seems like the button has disappeared indeed! See [1]. It actually appears from a brief instant, so I guess it is a bug that Joachim should solve soon. Nicolas1981 (talk) 04:42, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
- OK Nicholas, I see it now as the last (sixth) button in the vertically arranged column to the left of each dynamic map. Thanks for putting me out of my misery, I was worried I was being even more abstruse than usual. Are you still in Japan? --W. Franke-mailtalk 15:01, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

Linking to Wikipedia
editHello: I am checking for matching names - Once they are separated out I was thinking we could take a look at the NIWP and check for something to link them to that may be different but applicable... So yes, I think we are thinking along the same lines. Matroc (talk) 02:17, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
The Australian by rail link is a bit of a dud - there are specific articles about the 2 trains that are outlined in the article - however... still thinking as to whether your placement is of any real use - as the 2 train services dont necessarily jump out of that article... sats (talk) 09:54, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
Ipad
editWondering if the oxygenguide is available for the ipad? Travel Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 00:45, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
- I have never tried on iOS, but I guess it is possible, as OxygenGuide is just a lot of HTML files interlinked with relative links. This discussion suggests that "Goodreader" can be used for this. Please let me know whether it works, OxygenGuide needs iOS beta testers :-) Nicolas1981 (talk) 02:32, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
Syntax checks for WP links
editHi there. I don`t know exactly what you are doing to run your syntax checks, but by using an AWB routine in conjunction with Module:Wikibase, I've managed to add WP links to several thousand articles over the last couple of days, which should mean that I have covered every mainspace page whose corresponding Wikidata item had a WP link listed. So, happily, your syntax lists should be in dire need of an update now, and all that should remain are those more difficult cases where no WP article exists and/or the pages are linked to the wrong wikidata item. How are you generating those lists, by the way? Is it easy? Texugo (talk) 22:36, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Texugo! Thanks a lot for the hard work! I have always wanted to use AWB, but it is not available on Linux unfortunately. I will try to run it via Wine. I think that once every WV article is correctly linked to WikiData, we will be able to get the coordinates via template, without having to manually insert coordinates into the article (except for special cases). I think we should also lobby for Wikidata to include zoom levels.
- You are right, my list really needs an update. It uses the bi-weekly data dumps. I am re-generating it right now from the latest dump :-) Generating is easy, just use the OxygenGuide "all.sh" script, and run a few greps. I should have pasted the exact command line, I will post it. I think that one of the most important things is to maintain this list, so that we do not loose time on those at every new dump. Cheers! Re:Check whether a Wikivoyage article is linked from Wikidata

Isn't that what Special:UnconnectedPages is for? Texugo (talk) 22:30, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Merci.--Adehertogh (talk) 06:00, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. This category is getting up to almost 200 banners that need to be added to WD. Would you mind running the bot again? (It was you who did it before, right?) Texugo (talk) 16:49, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Hi again. There are currently over 500 in the category again.. If you could rerun this bot, that'd be much appreciated! Thanks! Texugo (talk) 10:33, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Pub sweeping
editHi! I'm sweeping some of the older conversations from the pub (around 2 months or older) and a few that were started by you I have moved here to your talk page.
The reason is that I'm not sure where these topics belong in WV. If you can think of a better place to move them then please do let me know! Andrewssi2 (talk) 03:39, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
Australian climate articles
editAfter seeing your reference to the adelaide article on wp en - went to have a look - interesting in years gone by they all seemed to be seen as unnecessary forks... and not a consistent collection for australia either - the sydney one seems the most developed. I am still very uncertain as to whether they are a good idea as independent arts. sats (talk) 14:59, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
listings.csv
editWhen the next database dump comes out in May, just wondering if you could produce a new listings.csv file? -- WOSlinker (talk) 22:22, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
- Sure! They did not seem to be very popular (1 download per day) so I am not spending much time on it anymore. Would you be able to run the script, or even better set it up for automatic generation on Wikilab? Anyway I am generating it right now :-) Cheers! Nicolas1981 (talk) 05:26, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thansk for running it again. I've been using the previous version to tidy up the data in the articles. I've downloaded the new version and can now look for more things to tidy up. -- WOSlinker (talk) 12:13, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

- Hi Matroc! When you want :-) I just launched the generation of a fresh one. It takes about 8 hours, I will upload to sourceforge when it is done. Thanks for using it! Nicolas1981 (talk) 07:19, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

- New data uploaded! Nicolas1981 (talk) 06:07, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hello again! - have a minor surprise for you -- not exactly perfect, but you were thinking about an idea for a map of Tokyo - I took the .csv file and pulled out all the see listings in categories related to Tokyo and played with them for a couple hours - editing, processing (figuring out the steps etc.), and a bit of hand fixing (ha ha ha!) - anyhow See: this page - Cheers! Matroc (talk) 11:06, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
- -- Added note: The see listings are numbered in order; however, there is a minor issue that took me hours to figure out! -- Insure that the listings have both a latitude and longitude or both are empty. Any numbered entry after the listing that is missing a long= argument for example, will be numbered correctly as well as any listings that follow... Everything will appear to be numbered correctly on an a page - but the kicker is that numbered icons after that listing will be increased by 1 on the map... ie. entry 10 on page will be 11 on a map etc. Can make life confusing... Cheers! Matroc (talk) 22:15, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
- Wonderful! It makes it very easy to find missing places! Especially useful for places that could be in one article or the other. Are Tamanrasset POIs included on purpose? Nicolas1981 (talk) 16:24, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi! - I believe I found another small bug:
- When images of road markers or links etc. are put in the directions field of a listing. Can see this in article Budapest - eat - Wasabi
directions=[[Image:BKV m 3 jms.svg|15px]]:close to Nyugati station
- this field appears to be cut off in the .csv file and appears as
"[[Image:BKV m 3 jms.svg"
- And in article San Bernardino - sleep - Wigwam Motel
directions=Route 66 at [[Rialto (California)|Rialto]] town line
- this appears to be cut off in the .csv file and appears as:
"Route 66 at [[Rialto (California)"
- Maybe the | is the problem - not positive if this occurs elsewhere besides the directions field. Cheers! Matroc (talk) 07:43, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
Kiwix

syntax check
editUseful tool, thanks for running this. Is it possible to be even smarter with the latitude/longitude? In particular distance between a listing location and centre of the geo coordinate more than say 50 km, sometimes incorrect values are input. --Traveler100 (talk) 06:35, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Yumenoshima
editHi Nicolas! I suspect you know Tokyo well. Can you please help me to find out which district (in WV) does Dream Island (Yumenoshima) belong to? I looked in your POI map (brilliant!) and missed one POI at Dream Island I plan to visit soon, and I wonder which article I should add it to. Thanks! Danapit (talk) 11:25, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Transvoyage
editHi Nicolas, I downloaded Transvoyage from https://github.com/nicolas-raoul/transvoyage and expanded, have now four files, one readme, and the licence, and then the other two which may be the functions. Not sure about the next step, I understood I can edit the script, and have no fear to so with any text program, but before I start to try, just wanted to ask if you have any type of manual or likewise written somewhere? greets, Dan Koehl (talk) 08:06, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Dan! Inspired by your message, I just wrote a manual described how to use and adapt the tool :-) It is visible at https://github.com/nicolas-raoul/transvoyage Please try to follow the manual, and let me know if the manual is unclear. I encourage you to use Git, it really helps collaborate. Good luck! :-) Nicolas1981 (talk) 09:15, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, Ill do that. Dan Koehl (talk) 09:19, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
User rename
editThis is just a suggestion that you should feel very, very free to ignore, but at least for a short while it might be useful if your signature was something like "Syced (formerly Nicolas1981) (talk)", just so those who aren't aware of the rename know who it is they're talking to. Again, feel very, very free to ignore, but I suspect I won't be the only one who occasionally gets confused. -- Ryan • (talk) • 04:34, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

Futzing
editHi:
- Long time since I left any messages for you - :) - I noticed that you have been getting involved with Wikidata. Just to let you know that I have done some futzing as a learning Lua and wikibase experience.
- I have created a temporary module (Module:Sandbox/Matroc) for looking at country, city, region data for my own personal analysis with information & links that are found in Wikidata. You can go to the Module page and see the functions available. It is a bit klutzy and needs streamlining (a lot of streamlining) - anyhow thought you might be interested before I remove it. Might give some more ideas for ya....
- I simply edit the bottom of an article and add something like: {{#invoke:Sandbox/Matroc|stuff}} and preview the results of the edit -- Please Don't Save the edit - just physically leave the page in order to keep the page in its original form.
- Will keep on editing as usual and see what other mischief I can get into. Hope you are having lots of fun!
- Have a great day! - Matroc (talk) 21:13, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
- Very nice Matroc! I am particularly interested in "coords1" as it seems to transform coordinates into a usable format, would you be able to use the same logic to implement lat/long extraction for the second listing here? Thanks a lot! Syced (talk) 09:00, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
- see "Futzing with Wikidata" on my Talk page -- Matroc (talk) 04:53, 12 June 2015 (UTC)
- Just couple notes - lat/long come out of Wikidata in decimal form.
- To make maps work would have to use safesubst which creates the completed listing on a page, this is the only way I can figure out to avoid parsing issues which were the problem.
- Again check out my talk page and my talk page/Sandbox for things done with wikibase as well as notes and other info so far.
- At this point in time there is no way to get the Qnnn using wikibase Client but perhaps that will change; hopefully, soon. - Cheers! - Matroc (talk) 19:20, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry I am not sure to understand the technical details... would you mind editing Tokyo/Roppongi's National Art Center listing to extract lat/long from Wikidata? Thanks a lot! :-) Syced (talk) 05:39, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- This is the code that will make the listing use data from Wikidata - and that data will be available for creating the map icon and map location. Even though you can get the information from Wikidata without using the safesubst: command and looks like everything is ok -- It is not there until after parsing has taken place. The reason why the icon on map has NO NAME etc.
- This will replace the complete listing on the page.. no more calling wikidata and result will be a final listing (as if someone typed it by hand).
{{see | name={{safesubst:#invoke:Sandbox/Matroc|title|Q1362638}} | alt={{safesubst:#invoke:Sandbox/Matroc|wikititle|Q1362638|jawiki}} | wikidata=Q1362638 | url={{safesubst:#invoke:Sandbox/Matroc|url|Q1362638}} | email= | address=7-22-2 Roppongi | lat={{safesubst:#invoke:Sandbox/Matroc|latitude|Q1362638}} | long={{safesubst:#invoke:Sandbox/Matroc|longitude|Q1362638}} | directions=Nogizaka stn, exit 6 | phone= | tollfree= | fax= | image={{#property:P18|from=Q1362638}} | hours=W–M 10:00–18:00 | price=Entry fees vary by exhibition, some are free | content=Tokyo's latest and greatest art museum, housed in an undulating wave-shaped building designed by Kisho Kurokawa and devoted entirely to changing exhibitions.}}
- becomes replaced with:
*{{see | name=National Art Center | alt=国立新美術館 | wikidata=Q1362638 | url=http://nact.jp | email= | address=7-22-2 Roppongi | lat=35.66528 | long=139.72634 | directions=Nogizaka stn, exit 6 | phone= | tollfree= | fax= | image={{#property:P18|from=Q1362638}} | hours=W–M 10:00–18:00 | price=Entry fees vary by exhibition, some are free | content=Tokyo's latest and greatest art museum, housed in an undulating wave-shaped building designed by Kisho Kurokawa and devoted entirely to changing exhibitions.}}
- 1 National Art Center (国立新美術館), 7-22-2 Roppongi (Nogizaka stn, exit 6). W–M 10:00–18:00. Tokyo's latest and greatest art museum, housed in an undulating wave-shaped building designed by Kisho Kurokawa and devoted entirely to changing exhibitions. Entry fees vary by exhibition, some are free.
- Scribunto (Lua) works after the page has been parsed or built... safesubst: simply says "Wait a minute, I want to do this before parsing (building) the page.
- This is a bit ugly and could confuse editors etc. I think something more needs to be done to be able to accomplish what you require. (a discussion with wikibase coders etc.). This will not be changed in Scribunto (Lua) as the issue of parsing has been addressed previously. - Matroc (talk) 22:53, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- Great, that works! Thanks a lot :-) Now the listing looks great. It also shows up at the right place on the dynamic map, although with no information in its tooltip. The complexity would probably be hidden either by templates or by a dialog. Syced (talk) 07:13, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
- NoName as tooltip was because the name is not there for the map though present for the name in listing... As I said before, its all in timing (parsing) and a headache... -- Matroc (talk) 03:20, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

- As you prefer. Few days ago I've tried to left a message on en:w without any success. If you want you can left a message both in the talk page of the competition and in the bar of ja:w. If I'm not wrong 3 active users are enough to bring out a wiki project from the incubator. At the moment this would be our first target to be reached. The improvement of its content will be managed afterwards. --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:09, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
Rabbit tourism?
edit- Swept in from the pub
Some people travel thousands of kilometers to go the the rabbit island Ōkunoshima, I also see another island in Cambodia, a Rabbit Village in Latvia and a rabbit beach in Sicily. Japan also has numerous rabbit cafés. Would a Rabbit tourism be on topic, and acceptable with enough substance? The nearest travel topic I could find is Birdwatching. Not sure whether the Eat section should list restaurants specializing in rabbit dishes. Cheers! Syced (talk) 05:38, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
- Travel topics can be whatever (legally) floats your boat. That said I'm not sure Rabbit aficionados (who visit Rabbit cafes) and Rabbit diners (who enjoy munching on rabbit) have that much common ground. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 10:00, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Redirects
editYou redirected Yamanashi to Yamanashi (prefecture) on the grounds of being contentless. That is not a valid reason to redirect. There are a lot of contentless or near contentless articles and many of them can easily hold their own articles. Yamanashi City and Yamanashi Prefecture are two different locations. We should never redirect a city to a prefecture/state. I just now noticed you also responded to the traveler's pub post. It's best for legitimate cities to have their own articles. This one is blank because of the particular circumstances in which it was created (to correct an error rather than as an organic creation). I'll see if I can add a few things so that it's not completely empty... ChubbyWimbus (talk) 12:07, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Suggestion for a coding project that might help bring many new language communities to Wikivoyage
editHi Syced. I noticed that you are an expert coder. I wanted to suggest an idea for a little coding project, which I think might help bring over many new language communities / readers to Wikivoyage.
I myself have been active on the Hebrew Wikivoyage for almost five years, and since I am the only highly active user there, I have developed various techniques to make sure that my contributions have a significant impact over time, and that I focus my attention to the most sought after articles among Hebrew readers. Over the years it has become very clear that the majority of the readers of the Hebrew Wikivoyage find most value in the phrasebook articles in comparison to levels of interest in destination articles and other type of articles. Unfortunately, creating good phrasebook articles is a long process... which needs to first involve a lot of copying and pasting, later includes finding an expert in that language willing to help improve the initial work... and unfortunately the hard work most of the time doesn't yield 100% perfect results (even when native speakers of those languages help improve those phrasebooks).
I also noticed that the time consuming process and the difficulty involved in creating good accurate phrasebooks are usually the main reason most of the regular editors on the Hebrew Wikivoyage completely refrain from improving or expanding them (which is a big problem, because most of the time, if a good "foundation" already exists to a phrasebook, the first native speakers of that language whom find it would be more likely to help correct all mistakes and finish the work - they usually don't do that if the article is almost empty from content or half empty). I have been told before that some editors prefer to refrain improving them because they don't speak those languages and therefore they are mainly afraid in creating mistakes in the Hebrew transliteration.
Either way... since the main initial creation of most phrasebook articles mostly involve a lot of CTRL+C and CTRL+V (before I get to writing the Hebrew transliterations), and since I am the main person whom is creating the phrasebooks on the Hebrew Wikivoyage, I decided to do two things most other Wikivoyage editions don't do with phrasebook articles - I use tables so that it is easier to paste a lot of content into them (and to review a lot of content) + I include the English transliterations column in each phrasebook articles which appears right next to the Hebrew transliterations that I later on create based on the English transliterations.
it looks something like this:
Phrase in Hebrew | German | English transliteration | Hebrew transliteration |
---|---|---|---|
יום טוב (פורמלי) | Guten Tag. |
GOO-ten tahk |
גוּ-טֶן טאק |
מה שלומך? | Wie geht's? |
vee GATES? |
וי גֶייטס? |
ערב טוב | Guten Abend. |
? |
? |
לילה טוב | ? |
shu-nun AH-bunt nokh |
שו-נֵן א-בֵנט נוך / גוּטֶן נאכט |
אני לא מבין/ה | Ich verstehe das nicht. |
eesh fur-SHTAY-uh dahs nikht |
? |
As you can see in the example above, in some instances the phrasebook articles in Hebvoy have question marks where work is still needed.
Our most wanted/read phrasebook on the Hebrew Wikivoyage is actually the Arabic phrasebook which I believe is used mostly by high school students in Israel whom are learning the language at school (Arabic of course also a very dominant language in Israel and that might also be the reason that many Hebrew speaking Israelis seem to be using the phrasebook on the go at the mobile version of the page instead of the desktop version of that page). The Arabic phrasebook on Hebvoy, which was created by me mostly, is still missing a lot of content and hasn't been significantly improved yet by native speakers of the Arabic language, but still... it is constantly ranked #3 of the most viewed pages of the Hebrew Wikivoyage (1,806 pageviews in the last 30 days).
My suggestion is, to create a software that helps generate the initial phrasebook articles for any language combination possible based on the information which is already available on the English Wikivoyage phrasebook articles (for example - creating Hindi-Hebrew phrasebook, Hindi-Dutch, Arabic-Japanese, Japanese-Dutch, etc). In order for such a software to work properly, this software should be capable of first being fed all the necessarily data from all phrasebook articles on the English Wikivoyage (even though I would probably never do this... since I don't know how to code, I have been very tempted to create something like this by getting all this data into one big excel file and then figuring out how to output the content from there with minimum work needed), and after that it should be able to easily generate all the top 30-40 phrasebook for any Wikivoyage language edition that is low on content or which hasn't been launched yet (I assume that there are many combinations and therefore I think a software would be better to do this initial important work than humans). Even though these bot generated articles would initially contain, just like in Hebvoy - tables, an English transliterations column, and question marks wherever data isn't yet available.... I believe that their existence would help gather a lot of interest from new readers to those Wikivoyage editions and would be very useful for editors like me, whom are spending multiple years of their lives copy+pasting content into phrasebook articles from the parallel articles on the English Wikivoyage.
What do you think ? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 19:07, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi ויקיג'אנקי! To help me understand better, could you please write what the software would produce for a new Wikivoyage in a language called ALLUPPERCASE, at ALLUPPERCASE.wikivoyage.org/English_phrasebook ? Thanks! Syced (talk) 03:20, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Syced. I decided that the first example I create of such a bot generated phrasebook would be a Hindi-French phrasebook. As a matter of fact, if you choose to create such a software, I suggest we first create the most sought after phrasebooks for the newly launched Hindi Wikivoyage mainly because they are one of the languages with most speakers world wide + because as of now they have no phrasebook articles at all on hi.wikivoyage.org.
- I should also mention that meanwhile I have also copied my Hindi-French phrasebook to hi.wikivoyage.org and asked them to help improve + expand it. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 17:01, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- On the second thought, I guess I should have created a Hindi-English phrasebook instead, as you probably don't know French. Oops. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 17:18, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- Should I make the Hindi-English phrasebook as well so you can use that as the main reference? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 17:53, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- I know French better than English, actually :-) Questions: 1) How did you get the Hindi sentences in the first column? Google Translate haha? 2) Why would Hindi speakers need English transliteration? Syced (talk) 01:39, 26 October 2017 (UTC)

- Great! It seems to me you don't fully understand the importance of these half-baked "foundation" phrasebook articles I suggested we create to language communities whom need them the most. The most important thing you need to understand is that it is much more likely that these half baked phrasebooks would go through major revamp just because they exist and because most people prefer to improve extensive articles like the phrasebooks instead of creating them from scratch... and therefore, I believe we must accept that the ideal development process of the phrasebooks (which in my opinion are probably the most sought after articles which bring all Wikivoyage language editions most of our readers) should be divided into two phases:
- (1) Phase #1 - creation of a rough draft that is mostly based on copy+paste from existing content on Engvoy and contains the English transliteration column so that it would still be useful for the many Hindi readers whom come across that phrasebook over the years (and some of them along the way are most likely going to add the Hindi transliterations sooner or later).
- (2) Phase #2 - a person whom knows both languages used in the phrasebook (in this instance, French and Hindi), comes across the phrasebook, is excited to have found it, and helps finalize our work and fixes all or most of the mistakes. This phase is inevtable, as more people would find the article from Google, and if we'll add links from Wikipedia (in this instance, I plan to add a link from the "See also" section in the Hindi Wikipedia article about the French language).
- Regarding your questions - in order to get the Hindi sentences I mostly used what was available in the English Wikivoyage Hindi phrasebook article (for 5-10 missing sentences I DID use Google translate... but... I assume that they would be fixed quite fast once they are up at hi.wikivoyage.org - I actually asked the Hindi Wikivoyage to go over that phrasebook and fix whatever they can). I believe I answered the second question in above. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 02:41, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- You prefer to not be involved in that? (please let me know if I misunderstood). ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 18:10, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
- I added it to my TODO list :-) However, my TODO list is really really huge, and as I am travelling quite often these days I don't make much progress :-/ Syced (talk) 02:42, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- That's fine. I'll probably try to get to it myself with A LOT of copying and pasting. ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 03:01, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Listing editor: invalisection
edit- Swept in from the pub
I just tried adding Q66048967 as the Wikidata item for Muan's aviation museum, and I get this error when saving:
Error: An unknown error has been encountered while attempting to save the listing, please try again: invalidsection
What is the problem? Thanks! :-) Syced (talk) 05:24, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
- I just did it with no problem using the pop-up listing editor. AlasdairW (talk) 22:56, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
