How are users to upload files? Some issues:

1. I do not see the expected "Upload file" link in left sidebar.
2. Wikivoyage:How to add an image may need updating.
3. Wikivoyage:How to upload files may need updating, also.
4. MediaWiki:Common.css has the comment, "/* hide upload link in toolbox */" at top but no corresponding CSS. Perhaps that is an artifact an admin might want to delete.
5. Special:Upload has an info box at top that may be relevant to all this.
6. Wikipedia's left sidebar "Upload file" links to an upload wizard. Do we want to implement something similar?

1) I changed it to Non-free files, but we really need a direct link to Commons:Special:UploadWizard.

4) was an artifact from the WT days (WT's Common.css still has only the one command in it, to hide the upload link). I've removed the comment. There's a bunch of other stuff in there, though, that's been added since the migration, and I don't know what half of it does. They should be commented. LtPowers (talk) 03:03, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

1)Yes, that's what I was thinking too. Most of the images should go straight to Commons, but with a clear note on when and how to upload locally.

The text on Special:Upload says "Stop! You should upload images to Wikimedia Commons." I think that we should add the word "free" in that text.

It also says that "All uploaded images are automatically licensed under CC-by-SA 3.0, unless otherwise specified." and it is only possible to select a CC license. But non free files should not have a CC license. They should have a non-free license like on Wikipedia. --MGA73 (talk) 19:05, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

The media in question are otherwise-free photos in which one copyrighted piece of sculpture or architecture is visible. In that case, the copyright of the photo and the copyright of the artwork are two separate entities. That's a little different from Wikipedia, where record album covers and cinematic theatrical release posters are allowed to appear on the page about that recording or film under "fair use" or "fair dealing" but are clearly not free and contain no free content. But that can be fixed by adding a "joint template" like w:Template:Photo of art. That way it is very clear to everyone looking at the file page that it is a photo that is not 100 % free. --MGA73 (talk) 20:04, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

To recap, I'd like to have the upload link in the Sidebar Toolbox (currently "non-free files") replaced with a link to a page with directions on where to upload what. MediaWiki:Upload

It is confusing to have the sidebar linking to a page called "Non-free files". I strongly suggest that MediaWiki:Upload be changed back to "Upload file", since we have to assume users will (a) not know to go to Commons in order to upload free files, and (b) not recognise the term "non-free". There is a link on Special:Upload to Commons' upload wizard, and a notice warning users about what to upload here. This, that and the other (talk) 06:37, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Some of you might have noticed that someone has been uploading stuff here in recent times. Is there a way to combat this? I think the easiest way would be to limit uploading files to autoconfirmed users. Or are there reasons against this? Hobbitschuster (talk) 21:56, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Is it possible to set up an Abuse Filter preventing the upload of certain types of files (.ogg, .webm, etc.)? -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 22:09, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

No can do. Some images must be uploaded locally because they would be deleted at Commons for reasons of lack of freedom of panorama but are considered important enough to be one element in an article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:11, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Besides blocking the accounts indefinitely (I saw a few that weren't blocked), I would report to stewards at m:SRCU, asking for a CheckUser and a global block of the IP addresses. It is also possible to limit uploading to autoconfirmed, if you get consensus and then ask for it on Phabricator. --Rschen7754 06:08, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

A consensus to limit local uploads to autoconfirmed users shouldn't be problematic. We only allow them for a very limited number or cases, of which new users are not aware anyway. We don't see valid use cases by newbies at all, just the spam. Such a limitation would solve the whole spam problem for now. I'm all for it. JuliasTravels (talk) 11:42, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

I believe that this would require a config change; if you want to do that, then I can figure out who to ask.

What are the autoconfirmed limits here? I believe that the default is 4 days and 0 edits, but a few of the wikis are set to zero-zero (which would make requiring autoconfirmed status pointless). Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:07, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

I don't think we should limit editing restrictions more than needed. Limiting local uploads to autoconfirmed is the standard, also on Wikipedia, and it's usually enough to keep spambots out. In fact, I was under the impression that this already was the threshold here - that's also what it says on Wikivoyage:Autoconfirmed_users. It seems to be just an oversight that it wasn't put into effect. So how do we get that changed? JuliasTravels (talk) 16:51, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

How can one download images from commons and upload here?

I saw at the pub that images from Taiwan at commons are being deleted. I don't know If there is any organized effort here to try and save those files by uploading them to wikivoage? I myself have never uploaded images anywhere because I find it way to tedious to learn which images are allowed and how to do it (I admit I have a short-fuse when it comes to learning new stuff).

Is there an explanation anywhere on wikivoyage about how images can be uploaded here from commons? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 19:09, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

You can use Special:Upload, which is linked in small print at the end of Wikivoyage:Upload file (this page, linked in the left margin). First save the full resolution version of the file on your device by right clicking "Original file" on the file description page, below the image itself. You may want to "edit" the wikicode of the image on Commons to copy it and paste it in as description over here. Change Commons links (such as usually the username attribution) to point to Commons, as they did automatically on Commons (so "[[User:LPfi|LPfi]]" should be changed into "[[:Commons:User:LPfi|LPfi]]"; mind the colons). After saving, check any redlinks to templates and the warning about the file not being used anywhere and edit accordingly. E.g. the language templates are absent from Wikivoyage; remove the "{{en|1=", the closing "}}" and the file description in other languages after having checked everything is there in English.

For the Taiwan case, anything where the licence of the photo is in order can probably be used in articles as fair use and thus uploaded here. Fair use does not cover use as a collection of images, so you may upload only files already in use or one for which you find a use. Moreover, the image should "materially contribute to the quality" of the article, which means that the image should be of something iconic for the city, or a good representation of street life or whatever. This indeed seems a bit convoluted when writing it down. We should probably have some semi-automated procedure, but I haven't written such tools and I am afraid the one on en-wp is too complicated for me to port it over just so. At least we should make it possible to fill in all required fields without first saving the page.

(edit conflict) No, but it's not so difficult. Sorry if the instructions below are too detailed. Go to the file on Commons - not the Media viewer view where it's almost fullscreen, but instead the classic view with information below, e.g.[1]. To get there, you can click on the photo in the article, then on the link in "Information from its description page there is shown below. " to get to commons. If you're still at the Media viewer view, hit "More details".

Then you should download the photo, how to do this depends on what kind of device and OS you use (for instance on a Mac press Alt and click on the photo). Keep that Commons file open in a tab.

Next go to Wikivoyage (in desktop view), click Upload file in the left sidebar and in the text in Wikivoyage:Upload file, on the link "upload it locally to this wiki". "Choose file" and navigate to the file and press Open or whatever it says in your OS. You will see a preview of the photo below. Below you have the option of changing the file name, better to keep it as it is because articles using the file (as a side note, I think it's only allowed to locally upload photos that are or will be used in articles, to make it Fair Use) will refer to that exact file name. Then a larger Summary box, below it a link to add a set of parameters; description, source etc. Copy in the information from commons (you did keep it open in another tab, right?). Below it is a Licensing menu, click it open, and of the licenses listed under the heading "Non free files", choose the license corresponding to the license for the file in commons.
