Regarding the following statement: "…Once you show your passport at the airport, you are free to move around pretty much anywhere…" This is mostly true. In 2004 I rode a minibus from Nazareth (Adama) to Addis, in the late evening after the regular buses stopped running. The police stopped us when we reached the outskirts of Addis and all the male passengers had to get out of the vehicle. I assume they were checking for contraband or weapons, and was told this only happened at night. I honestly don't remember if they checked my passport, though. There was no questioning. The men got out, the police/soldiers looked inside, we got back in and that was it (except by that point it had started to rain). This was not a big deal, but at the same time I don't think it's entirely accurate to say that one may freely go anywhere. In any event, it is generally advised that you make this sort of trip during daylight hours. -- (WT-en) Gyrofrog (talk) 16:13, 29 May 2007 (EDT)

Shopping centers

edit

Understand. Regarding this statement: "Addis Ababa is also one of the best and biggest shopping cities in Africa with 12-15 shoppingcenters in the centre of Addis Ababa.". This simply can't be true. At most there are about 8 supermarkets and about one shopping centre.

Please plunge forward and make the changes as you deem appropriate! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 13:53, 5 February 2009 (EST)

Phone numbers are out of date should be +251 11 XXX XXXX as of 17 Sep 2005

edit

The article appears to be full of out of date phone numbers from pre 2006 when the city changed from a 6 digit number to a 7 digit number. Number should be +251 11 XXX XXXX. However most are +251 11 XXXXXX. If the phone numbers are 4 years+ out of date I assume all the listings content is out of date as well.(WT-en) felix 05:15, 4 December 2010 (EST)

Please see the Wikipedia page on this monument for more information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiglachin_Monument The Derg were a murderous Communist regime that nobody now wishes to honor in any way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Terror_%28Ethiopia%29Country Wife (talk) 17:44, 3 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Guide and DotM

edit

This is one of our better articles (content-wise at least) of a major African city and I think it would make a nice Destination of the month someday. Africa is still underrepresented among our featured articles, though the situation has got better over the last years.

The article needs to be tidied up a little — some bulleted points need to be turned into proper listings etc. — and we have to check that everything is up to date before the article goes on the main page, and then upgraded to guide status. There's no rush, though, the article could be featured sometime in the latter half of 2018 at earliest. Also, given that it sometime still is hard finding information about points of interest in African destinations on the Internet, it's good that we have a local editing here. That's the lead photo, and the reason is no freedom of panorama in Ethiopia. "Sculptor Maurice Calka died in 1999. Photo can be restored in 2050 after expiration of copyright (50+1 years from death)." If it's important enough to us, we have to upload the photo locally before it's deleted from Commons. If it's important for us to show a photo of the lion statue, we could consider uploading a different photo locally, like File:Lion of Judah, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.JPG where the lion is more clearly visible. Alternatively we could use a photo of a different sight such as St George's Cathedral (File:Katedrála sv. Jiří.jpg) or the older lion monument (File:ET Addis asv2018-01 img38 Lion of Judah.jpg). I don't know what makes the best representation of Addis Ababa. —Granger (talk · contribs) 18:50, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've never been there. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:42, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

This article was nominated for dotm but slushed due to the emergency in Ethiopia; see Wikivoyage:Destination of the month candidates/Slush pile#Addis Ababa. As the country is more peaceful now, shall we nominate the article again? /Yvwv (talk) 12:50, 17 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

There are many listings that are out of date or undated. Ground Zero (talk) 16:26, 17 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
The lead paragraph doesn't explain why a reader should wat to visit Addis. Ground Zero (talk) 17:12, 13 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
