Merge attribution

edit

An edit comment of "Merge in", as in Special:Diff/4526795/4594515 isn't really helpful as attribution or for checking the origin of the content: one has to guess at the article name (and redirects are confusing for less seasoned users). I added a permanent link to the last non-redirected version instead, in the following edit. A permanent link is immune to later history of the page and thus preferable, but just a link works adequately in most cases. โ€“LPfi (talk) 09:58, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Fair point. I will be sure to add a link. Ground Zero (talk) 12:21, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Jaigaon

edit

The Jaigaon article was totally removed by a contributor who linked it to the Indian page. Not sure why he or she did that, but the page had useful information on the town. I have tried to undo his redirect edit, but the system is not allowing me to do so. Could you help. Thanks. unsigned comment by user:SingyeDzong, 12 Jan 2023

I've started a discussion at talk:Jaigaon to ask SBB1314 why this redirect was made. Let's find out beside changing it back. Ground Zero (talk) 17:33, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. User:SingyeDzong
I think you have left the message on the wrong user page. The person who reverted the page is User:Sbb1413 not SBB1314 unsigned comment by user:SingyeDzong, 12 Jan 2023
I've corrected it on the article talk page. Please don't forget to sign each of your comments on a talk page. It is easy to do by typing this at the end of your comment: ~~~~. Ground Zero (talk) 17:50, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

The same contributor has also merged Hasimara with the India page. Please see Talk:Hasimara. Thank you. user:SingyeDzong

What should we do about the contributions of IP sockpuppets of ArticCynda in articles like that? Those would be at least User:178.255.152.117, User:87.74.196.200, User:46.233.112.44 and User:178.255.156.181. It might be very hard to unravel all of their edits without also deleting the work of others. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:03, 8 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Ischgl is another tricky one. A lot of content was added by that guy, but not the entire article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:30, 8 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
LPfi already cleaned up that article, though. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 06:32, 8 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
You're right; I see that now. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:34, 8 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'm 4 days late, but...

...congratulations on passing 75,000 editsย :-). That's a significant achievement that only one Wikivoyager has passed before you (Ikan Kekek). Wikivoyage would be starkly different, especially when it comes to enforcing the manual of style, without you; please keep the updates coming! Thanks gor letting me know! I wasn't aware this had happened. Ground Zero (talk) 12:59, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, TBF, unless you use the NavigationPopups tool, it's not something you'd frequently check. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 13:07, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

I was deleting a bunch of vandal edits per Wikivoyage:Deny recognition, which was time-cosuming. I did not take more time to go through individual edits. Ground Zero (talk) 20:51, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Static maps

edit

Hi, Ground Zero. I have a bit of spare time on my hands until Monday, enough to draw a few static maps. Are there any regions that you want me to create a map for? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 00:39, 13 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the offer. KwaZulu-Natal is the only one I can think of at the moment. Ground Zero (talk) 12:38, 13 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Voila! It only took about 4.5 hours (not a lot for a non-cheap map), but I've made sure to include all major settlements, freeways and highways (including the highway to eSwatini). Unfortunately, I have not visited ZA nor eSwatini so I've based the MR8 on what's seen on this sign. I also had to use the default font similar to many East Coast Australian maps since downloading the ZA/eSwatini font would take too long. Is there anything else on the map that I should add? Otherwise, passe un excellent 14 juillet, Ground Zeroย ! --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 05:23, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
That looks great! I don't know much about the region either. I didn't make it that far east. Thanks for spending so much time on it. Bonne fรชte ร  toi aussi. Ground Zero (talk) 13:13, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Not a problem โ€“ it was also a good learning opportunity for me, too! Let me know if you want me to draw maps for any other region. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 13:30, 14 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Love the creativity

edit

Special:Diff/4731318 is definitely the first time I've seen anyone try to grab an anon's attention using 10 H2 headers โ€“ gave me relief while waiting for a train out in the 36ยฐC heat. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 06:42, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I don't know what else to do with this editor. Their contributions are good, and are expanding our coverage of the Philippines, so I don't want to discourage them, but they have ignored every other request. If you have any ideas, I'd be happy to hear them. Ground Zero (talk) 11:03, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
This seems very extreme, but I'm thinking of some sort of temporary edit filter that explicitly prevents them from writing the strings "12AM" and "12PM" in mainspace โ€“ it would only work for that IP, and it should be public so that they're aware of the issue. Unfortunately, I don't know how to write filters (any help, LPfi?) and it can come as draconian, especially given that it's not being used for anti-spam or anti-vandalism purposes.
The other option I had in mind was using a partial block on mainspace edits until they respond to your talk page messages, but I had an inner feeling that this may completely deter the user from editing. Otherwise, I'm not sure what to do. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 11:16, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Their last edits, logged in as Rogeliomnl24, used "noon", but still use โ‚ฑโ‚ฑโ‚ฑ to indicate price. Small victories. Ground Zero (talk) 14:40, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Noice. Progress, at last! --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 21:38, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
I think the filter would be easy to write. It would be something like (in pseudosyntax) "ip=IP and added_lines includes 12AM and removed_lines not includes 12 AM"; for those who try to avoid filters you need to be more clever. However, I am not in the mood of writing it now (soon rushing away), so we might want to wait to see whether they got it already. โ€“LPfi (talk) 15:29, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Adding some stuff to Michigan

edit

Hello I'm new here and I noticed that there was a lot of stuff missing in Michigan and I was curious if I could edit it Ryanmccreedy (talk) 16:17, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

All users can edit articles here, so of course you can edit it, but what is it that you wanted to add? I ask because there are many things that should be covered in local or region articles, rather than the article for the state. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:30, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Dublin - Ferryman

edit

Hey - The discussion was actually over in my usertalk page. The suggestion was instead of having the image of the pub in the first portion of the page - we stick it in the Drinks section. -- In general I'm finding the quality of images in Dublin's page really quite poor, so I'm look at ways to help improve that aspect. If you don't mind me asking: as I'm in the midst of writing Australia without a car, how knowledgeable are you on being able to create/add content to Canada without a car (a redlink as of writing this)? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 07:14, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'm not really one to ask as I have driven from coast to coast, and as far north as I could get on paved roads. I'll take a look at your Aus article, but for the moment a Canadian version would just restate what's in Canada#Get around. I don't have much to add beyond that. Ground Zero (talk) 07:22, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Same here since I'm mostly a road tripper and only use public transit within cities when it's more convenient โ€“ having road tripped from Southwest National Park to Far North Queensland to the Yorke Peninsula. I just figured that I had to write it about my rather limited knowledge for the many travellers who don't drive or aren't willing to drive (inspired from United States without a car). --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 07:34, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Any idea?

How to get of this weird red error (Page Template:Pagebanner/sandbox/styles.css has no content.) at Goseong_(South_Gyeongsang)? And thanks for c/e-ing my students' article. Feel free to offer them feedback on the talk (if you do so, please ping them and me). Cheers, (oh, and I'll also ping @Gregsmi11 who also did some c/e of this - thank you as well). Piotrus (talk) 04:09, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Piotrus: the Pagebanner template had "/sandbox" in it. I've removed it, and it works now. The biggest issue we're facing with editors who I think are your students is that some of them are adding a lot of text that is too detailed for a travel guide -- information on hydrography, details on administrative structure of municipalities, lists of neighbouring municipalities, and so on. What a travel guide really needs is information on how to get to a place, and what to see and do. I suspect that some student are just copying from Wikipedia or other sources. However, It is good to see our coverage of Korean and Chinese destinations being expanded. I hope that your students are finding this to be a useful exercise. Here are two examples: [1], [2]. Ground Zero (talk) 04:49, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I am aware of this problem. I'll try to come up with some activity that addresses this next year. If you have any ideas (maybe there's a Wikivoyage page that describes this problem?) I'll add something to User:Hanyangprofessor2 (see the last section where I ask them to read artcles about what I think are relatively common errors, I can add more reading there and make it required earlier on - something I am thinking about for next year). Piotrus (talk) 05:14, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
@piotrus: I've looked around at our style guides, and I think that Wikivoyage:Goals and non-goals would he useful for your students. It addresses the "encyclopedia" issue, but provides a bigger picture of what we are trying to do here. I hope it helps. Ground Zero (talk) 07:44, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Great, I'll add it there. Piotrus (talk) 10:21, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sorry

edit

Hey, just wanted to apologise more formally about my coarse words the other day. Just read through them again and I was out of line. I sometimes act like I'm on a private, raucous chatroom rather than on a public wiki. This isn't anything sycophantic; I have zero ambitions here. But I did step out of bounds with my language and I want to affirm my original apology. I came across as way too aggressive. That was not my intention. Sorry. Brycehughes (talk) 17:33, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for this. I appreciate your sincerity. It wasn't necessary, though. I don't believe you bear me any ill-will. We're cool. Regards, Ground Zero (talk) 02:40, 22 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Trying to read you on CautionBox but what are you asking? Do WarningBoxes allow external links but CautionBoxes don't? Sorry, I can't really follow, probably my fault. Brycehughes (talk) 18:57, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Two sorries in a row gets me a Canadian citizenship I think. Brycehughes (talk) 19:00, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hahaha. God I met the most racist Canadian (shocker) today. But he was like 70 years old and from northern Saskatchewan so I think he gets a pass. Brycehughes (talk) 20:21, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

I've been really out of the loop for quite a while with uni exams and now travelling, but I just saw your message on the pub regarding warning boxes โ€“ and I have to say, thanks for getting to it. It's been on that list of mine for a while but never ended up getting to it, so thanks for handling thoseย :-). --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 00:35, 24 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Adelaide Hills

edit

I understand your reasoning. I was considering something along the same. I mentioned the wealthy... because their properties are what some people want to see and stay at. By splitting between Lead and Understand, has the balance of what the area has to offer been changed. Also this area is a little cooler on a hot day and that might be an attraction in itself.
