Talk:Eastleigh
This article has Star potential. It's well written with great information. However, for Star status it needs both to be entirely complete and to exactly match the manual of style. If you see how it can be improved, please plunge forward or point it out on the talk page. |
Promotion to Guide status
editI have been working on this article extensively for the last few days - do you think it should be promoted to Guide status? As far as I can tell, I have met all the criteria necessary to do so, but I want a second opinion. What do you guys think? 82.3.185.12 13:54, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- Is it possible to write more on cycling than just a link to a map? I also think you might want to have structured listings under Drink, not just prose. Vaticidalprophet (talk) 15:17, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- First of all, I've been noticing your edits here and can see the article's really taking shape. The Sleep and Do sections in particular look a lot different. The article ticks most of the boxes for Guide, but the areas where it's a bit weak is the Eat and Drink sections. Saffron, the Great Moghul etc. should have proper listings like the three restaurants that already do. Basically the same story with the pubs in Drink. If you want a hand with those over the next few days (I'll be relying on Google, because I've never visited Eastleigh), just let me know.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:34, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- A few things. The Eat and Sleep listings need a bit of description. Places in Drink should be listingfied with contact information & descriptions, the same for the couple of restaurants in Eat which are just named. And a pic or two in the last third of the article wouldn't hurt.--Ypsilon (talk) 15:54, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

- Almost Support – Feedback below
- Cycling needs better work. Listing the website isn't enough
- See the messages I've left for the time to get to London and Birmingham
- A little more description needed for the eat and drink, as guide articles usually have a description for the eat.
- Otherwise, I'm in favour of upgrading this. SHB2000 (talk) 21:46, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
@ThunderingTyphoons!: Thank you for offering your assistance. I'm starting now so feel free to help if you want to. 82.3.185.12 16:56, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

- @82.3.185.12: Okie-dokie. BTW, before you add any more chain restaurants, you might want to read WV:Boring. We generally don't list branches of (inter)national chains, because it's assumed that most travellers are more interested in trying something unique to the place they're visiting, and even if they're not, it's really easy for them to find the nearest branch of their favourite fast food place. Eastleigh apparently has no lack of independent restaurants, so there's no need to list the likes of Greggs, Maccys, KFC etc.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 18:56, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- @ThunderingTyphoons!, SHB2000, Ypsilon, Vaticidalprophet, Ikan Kekek: I am going to stop editing this page now and come back in a couple of days. I have a list of restaurants for Chandler’s Ford and Fair Oak to add to the list. I am well aware of the 7+2 rule, and I am planning to put them into smaller categories (maybe different types of places, e.g. Chinese, Indian etc.). I am also going to remove some places per WV:Boring, however I think it will be easier for me if I add all the places first, them remove some and categorise the rest. 82.3.185.12 20:37, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- Don't worry too much about long lists of restaurants. List everything worthwhile and subdivide as useful. I'd keep price divisions as primary and then suggest subsections within those price categories. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:42, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- If you want to split them, do User:KevRobbSCO's restaurant style. SHB2000 (talk) 21:45, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

@ThunderingTyphoons!: Although South Hampshire’s area code is 023, Southampton’s area code is 0238 and Portsmouth’s is 0239. I am going to put it back to that for now. 82.3.185.12 09:07, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry, but that's not true. The area code for the entire 023 area is... 023. You should read this Wikipedia article, because you're not alone in believing that 02380 is the area code for Southampton (the page W:02380 even redirects to that article). And if you don't believe Wikipedia, try using your house phone (if you've got one) to dial an Eastleigh landline with just six numbers, i.e. omitting 02380; it won't work.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:12, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- There's a reason I noted in this article that's it's a common misconception, and also that it's unfortunate that most Eastleigh numbers start 02380, because it makes everyone think that's the area code.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:13, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- @ThunderingTyphoons!: Most signs in Eastleigh say 02380 XXXXXX or just XXXXXX (although these might have been from when the area code was 01703). 82.3.185.12 09:16, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- I believe you, but they're still all wrong. Many signs in London say 0207 XXXXXX or 0208 XXXXXX, even though the area code is 020. It's just one of those things, because the vast majority of UK area codes have five digits (e.g. mine is 01252). As said already, I noted the misconception in the article because it's very common and easy to believe.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:26, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- @ThunderingTyphoons!: I see. You do occasionally see 80XXXXXX, although just XXXXXX is more common. Thank you for explaining that to me TT! 82.3.185.12 09:32, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

- @ThunderingTyphoons!: Eastleigh used to have a five-digit code (01703) just like Aldershot, although they changed it to 023 instead. Although this Wikipedia page says Southampton’s area code is 02380. 82.3.185.12 15:58, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- @ThunderingTyphoons!: Most of the articles for towns in Hampshire - and the article for Hampshire itself - use +44 23XX XXXXXX rather than +44 23 XXXX XXXX. Is it best to change it on all of them or would that just take too long? 82.3.185.12 16:40, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- @ThunderingTyphoons!: Should we change it to +44 23 XXXX XXXX? This Wikipedia page says Southampton's area code is 02380, and the phonebook uses 0238X XXXXXX. As well as this, most of the articles in the Southampton/Portsmouth area (including Hampshire's article) use +44 23XX XXXXXX. It would probably take quite a while changing it on all of them. 82.3.185.12 17:52, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't get these pings. The numbers should be changed, but as you said it will take a while. There's no immediate rush to change them, because they've probably been like that for years, but as I visit articles gradually I'll change them; you could do the same if you wish.--ThunderingTyphoons! - It may be possible to revert those, rather than changing them back manually. But it depends whether there are later edits that conflict.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:09, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
- @ThunderingTyphoons!: I see. 82.3.185.12 16:29, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
- I added mobile coverage. Suggest removing the area codes from "Connect" (and generally), as to give these in isolation from a number is like saying an address in town ends in East . . . (eg what about mobile-based businesses). Grahamsands (talk) 13:34, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- Their presence is useful and can only help or be irrelevant (they're not going to mislead people). Generally, I've been marking 'nonconformist' numbers (i.e. premium lines, mobile, non-geographic standard rate) as such, so they're not a concern.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:53, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- The number format can probably be changed quite easily with search-and-replace (if one finds a time when there'll be no edit conflicts), so there is no need to change it manually. I think knowing the local area code is useful, although it might be redundant with explicit marking of 'nonconformist numbers'. –LPfi (talk) 14:10, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

I'm done
edit@ThunderingTyphoons!, SHB2000, Ypsilon, Vaticidalprophet, Ikan Kekek: I think I have done all I can to improve this page. Feel free to check it out and tell me whether you think I should upgrade it to Guide status or not. 82.3.185.12 16:36, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

- Would still be good to have some kind of descriptions for the sleep listings, maybe from their websites but otherwise it could probably be promoted to guide status. For future reference, you can have a look at articles we have previously featured on the Main page: Previous Destinations of the month for bigger and more visited destinations, Previously Off the beaten path for smaller and less visited destinations, and Previous Featured travel topics for travel topics (itineraries, cuisines, phrasebooks, historical and cultural topics etc.) to get a picture what guide articles should look like (they're interesting reading too :)). --Ypsilon (talk) 16:57, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

- Not yet. On a quick look I saw a few things that are not perfect: The page banner is a photo taken near Curbridge, which is not really in the scope of the article. Understand has a sentence about Bishopstoke which has a blue link which takes you back to where you started from. The Concorde Club is not a "see" listing unless it has something like an exhibition on its history - it is do or drink. Connect has nothing about phone reception, wifi, post offices etc. Hotels have no price ranges or descriptions. Generally I would prefer to wait a few months after the post lockdown reopening to see how things work out. AlasdairW (talk) 19:10, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

- This looks to me to be pretty close to Guide standard already. Many of the comments in the prior section (and some of my bullets below) seem more appropriate for an article seeking Star status. However:
- I want to reiterate the comments about Get around > By bike. It doesn't need to be long, but include a sentence or three on the main routes. (In my pet Star article Caldas da Rainha, I stuck Bicycling under Do > Outdoors, as I felt it was more practical as a leisure activity than as transport).
- The Eat listings could do with a bit more description beyond restating the cuisine already mentioned in the subsection header. Maybe mention especially good dishes / house specialities, decor, or standard of service.
- Under Connect, I don't think that eastleigh.online complies with Wikivoyage:External links.
- Under Go next, break up the second bullet into separate bullets for each place, mentioning at least one interesting sight in each.
- I know prices are difficult, as people order different meals and hotel rates depend on many factors, but try to give travellers some rough idea of how much they can expect to spend on eating and sleeping establishments.

As far as I can tell, these are the things people think should be done to promote the article to guide status:
- Done Add more description for the "By bike" section
- Done Add information about how to get to London and Birmingham
- Done Add more places to eat
- Done Add more places to drink
- Done Split up the "Go next" section
- Done Add description to the hotels
- Done Promote the article to Guide status
I will try to update this list as I complete these things. 82.3.185.12 17:12, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

- @AlasdairW: The banner is of the River Hamble, which is technically in the Borough of Eastleigh. Feel free to make a new banner if you want to though. 82.3.185.12 18:02, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
- Fareham appears to cover this area slightly more than this article, in that it has a listing for Bursledon Brickworks (should this listing be moved here?) Maybe a sentence could be added about the River Hamble - are there any riverside walks? The banner technically is too small an image, so it would be better to replace it. Do you have any photo suggestions - either pictures already in Commons, or could you upload a photo? AlasdairW (talk) 20:16, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

Pubs
editI'm not really sure which pubs to include per WV:Boring. Here are a list of five pubs that were on the article but were removed. Which ones do you think should be added again?
- The Chamberlayne Arms (Marston's)
- The Wagon Works - formerly The Tavern (Wetherspoons)
- New Clock Inn (Hungry Horse)
- The Cricketers Arms (a Greene King pub)
- The Hiltonbury Farmhouse (a Lantern Inn pub) - this was listed as an 'Eat' listing. 82.3.185.12 18:18, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry it took me a while to get around to this. I'd say all apart from the Hungry Horse can be reinstated, since they're mainly about food, and the food is not great. The rest all look like nice places to spend some time in.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 21:15, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Star nomination 2
edit[From WV:Star nominations/Slush pile#Eastleigh]
I have added lots to this article over the past month, and I believe it fits all the criteria to become a Star. 82.3.185.12 15:41, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- Support as nominator. 82.3.185.12 15:43, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Almost Support also just a check below --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 07:49, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
Has a tourist-style map with point-of-interest markers showing how to get around the destination, with major attractions, restaurants, etc. that match the listings in the guide. - Done
Layout and listing formats either match the manual of style exactly or are the exception that proves the rule. - Done
Prose is not only near-perfect grammatically but also tight, effective, and enjoyable. - almost, though could be a lot better
At least one good-quality photo accompanies the article; preferably 2-3 showing famous or important attractions. - Done
SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 11:29, 5 May 2021 (UTC) Check my new feedback below.
Still needs work:
- There's almost certainly more to write about Chandler's Ford in 'Understand'.
- Every listing needs a street address with postcode.
- 'Get in' could do with some info on parking - is it easy, how much etc?
- 'Get around' could list some useful bus routes, particularly for getting from Eastleigh town centre or the stations to outlying places of interest (CF, Bishopstoke, Marwell Zoo?)
- 'Buy' mentions independent shops exist; are any worth listing? The shopping centre and supermarkets could do with full listings as well.
- The 'Eat' section seems quite long; are there really 30+ highly recommended restaurants in Eastleigh, or could some of the fat not be trimmed off? I think they would be better organised by price (budget, mid-range, splurge) rather than cuisine. Listings also need full descriptions and some indication of price (e.g. average cost of a main).
- Conversely, the 'Drink' section seems very short. I appreciate that User:82.3.185.12 may not be very well-versed in pubs yet and I'm happy to help add more if there are ones worth listing.
- 'Sleep' - room rates are essential. There's probably a greater variety of accommodation than currently represented too (B&Bs, camping?). Again, should probably be split by price.
- I agree with SHB2000 that the writing could be zingier. Also more photos! (hints: Marwell Zoo, River Itchen)
Apologies if a lot of this seems harsh or nitpicking, but 'Star' articles are essentially supposed to be perfect, so standards are really high. There may be other stuff I haven't spotted yet. The important thing is not to feel like you have to immediately tick everything off; there's absolutely no rush to complete anything, and this nomination can hang on here just fine for as long as people are working on the article (ignore the fanciful stuff above about "concluding after two months" which experience has taught me is unrealistically short).--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 12:25, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
- @ThunderingTyphoons!: - What does this sentence mean? "I appreciate that User:82.3.185.12 may not be very well-versed in pubs yet and I'm happy to help add more if there are ones worth listing." SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 13:01, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
- 82 attends school, so is probably underage.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 13:45, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
- @ThunderingTyphoons!: There are more pubs however they are owned by chains, so I wasn't sure whether to include them per WV:Boring. There are a few B&Bs and definitely no camping sites. I've not added prices/opening hours since they are constantly changing due to COVID-19. 82.3.185.12 14:44, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
- @ThunderingTyphoons!: - None of my family have any interest in pubs or drink and it may explain why I tend to not improve the drink section sometimes. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 05:32, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
- You can usually get a rough idea of prices from Google Maps or sites like Trivago etc. There was a discussion a while ago (here) regarding chain pubs, which didn't really get resolved; I think some are okay to list, as long as there's a balance. Some chain pubs are better than others - e.g. Wetherspoons always serve some local beers or ciders and often have good deals on food and cocktails, but Greene King pubs only sell their own low-quality beers.--ThunderingTyphoons! @ThunderingTyphoons!: Here is the list of pubs that I removed/didn't add, feel free to choose which ones should be in the article.
- The Chamberlayne Arms (Marston's)
- The Wagon Works - formerly The Tavern (Wetherspoons)
- New Clock Inn (Hungry Horse)
- The Station - formerly The Litten Tree (owned by Great UK Pubs)
- The Spitfire - formerly Stones (Craft Union Pubs) 82.3.185.12 16:13, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Not yet Almost Support (edited 11 May, and will change to support if lead paragraph is fixed)
I do also have some other feedback here:
- Does the times include with traffic, or no traffic and at what time of the say will you be able to achieve that time. What about in traffic?
- Explain a bot more on how to go from Southampton Airport to Eastleigh
- Tone could be a bot more livelier.
- Listings could be used for the buy section
- Explain what's unique about all the pizza and fish and chips shops in Eastleigh, instead of broadly saying "xyz".
- Are there any worship places in Eastleigh that could come under "Cope"?
- Why are some measurements in miles and the others are in metres
I'm also sorry for nitpicking, but these are the things I thought could be better. Although I have to say, this article is looking better than Menzies SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 23:52, 8 May 2021 (UTC)
- @SHB2000:
- Southampton Airport is in Eastleigh, hence why SOU IATA redirects to the 'By plane' section on Eastleigh's article.
- I think there are too many listings under Eat, but I don't know which ones to remove. Done - Most of the 'Eat' listings fit into one of the listings in the 'Buy' section above - it now only has nine items.
- Not listing places of worship per this. There are also no mosques/synagogues/temples in Eastleigh, and there aren't really many things to do in the churches.
- In England, we mainly use metres and miles (e.g. the shop is 100 metres up the road, the next motorway service station is 5 miles away) as miles is more common than km in the UK, and the only time you really hear distances measured in yards is on a satnav. 82.3.185.12 17:38, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- @82.3.185.12 That explains why I was confused when going on the M25 and the M3, 3 years back. I thought the US and Liberia were the only countries to still use the imperial system. (although NASA and SpaceX uses metric) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 07:34, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- But apart from that, I'm now going for Almost Support. Just the tone could be a bit more livelier. Also, in the routebox, doesn't M3 dump you onto Twickenham, not London? Yes, you do go on the A3 after that, but aren't they 2 separate roads? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 07:35, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- @SHB2000: Junctions 1 and 2 of the M3 are in Greater London. 82.3.185.12 16:05, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- @SHB2000: I think I have now implemented all your feedback apart from improving the tone. Could you please explain which part of the article needs to sound more lively? 82.3.185.12 17:47, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
- By reading what it says at the top of the page, and looking at Caldas da Rainha's nomination, I believe that this article will get Star status on the 25th of May if all problems are solved and a consensus is achieved by then. 82.3.185.12 17:47, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

- The Chamberlayne Arms (Marston's)
- The Wagon Works - formerly The Tavern (Wetherspoons)
- New Clock Inn (Hungry Horse)

- @ThunderingTyphoons!: Okay, thank you for letting me know. 82.3.185.12 19:49, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
- Looks like a good and thorough article, but I do have some comments and suggestions:
- Please fix the coordinates in the airport marker. Right now it's in the Channel off the Isle of Wight.
- Does Swan Shopping Centre need that link in the Buy section intro? It's already in the listing right below.
- Could the Eat listings provide some indication of cost? If not actual prices, how about division by budget/mid-range/splurge, with the {{Eatpricerange}} template?
- Could anything else be said for the restaurants beyond type of cuisine? Specific recommended dishes? Decor/atmoshpere? Service? What about hours? (These can always be updated later as pandemic adjustments warrant).
- UK phone numbers in WV listings usually include a hyphen: +44 YY XXXX-XXXX (may differ from non-WV practices). Wikivoyage:Phone numbers
- --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 20:38, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
- One more thing: I believe that the main airport listing and the SOU redirect should go in Southampton, even if most of the airport is physically in Eastleigh. Most travelers will associate it with Southampton. I did this with Westchester County Airport, which is associated with White Plains even though no part of it falls within this city. The small communities it actually lies in are too small for most people to have heard of. Nelson Ricardo (talk) 20:55, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
- In this case Southampton is so close that Eastleigh doesn't matter for most travellers using the airport (and I did the same for Bromma/Stockholm), but as the link leads readers to the right article, I think what matters is whether the nearby "small communities" are nearby also logistically (not by a motorway with no off ramp) and have something worthwhile to offer for those flying in or waiting for their connection, and whether services relevant for the airport are also relevant when visiting the nearby communities. There should probably be some guidelines in Airport Expedition. –LPfi (talk) 05:02, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Nricardo: Most phone numbers aren't normally written with a hyphen in England, however I have added hyphens per WV:Phone numbers. All eat/drink listings now have opening hours and prices, however these will change soon at people are allowed to go inside restaurants and pubs on the 17th of May. 82.3.185.12 18:20, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

- I still don't support because there are several outstanding points in my comment at least. The restaurant descriptions are still poor (look at the gastropub I added for inspiration on what could be put in each); the question about whether independent shops can be listed remains unanswered; there is still very little about Chandlers Ford in Understand; no info on parking in Get in; no info on buses in Get around... there's no rush to upgrade this.--ThunderingTyphoons! - I think it still needs some work - some examples:
- The description of Eastlieigh Museum doesn't look like it was written by somebody who has spent long exploring the museum.
- There are several mentions of raiway history, including in understand but this isn't properly explained - what happened here & when.
- St Mary's Church says what happened there, but not what you would see inside.
- Are the chippies restaurants or just take-aways? Although visitors are probably happy to eat outside in these Covid times, normally sit-in places are more important than take-aways. Maybe there should be a take-away sub-section to break up the listings.
- There is no hurry, and it might be better to wait six months, so you can see what happens when the current restrictions and support end. AlasdairW (talk) 22:40, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
- @AlasdairW: Most shops went back to their normal opening hours on the 17th of May, and I don't think that they will change again. I will try to add all of the other feedback that you have mentioned. 82.3.185.12 15:47, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

- Shops may be open as normal, but pub opening is far from normal. All customers must be seated in distanced tables, which gives a completely different atmosphere to normal. Siliarly churches have limited numbers and no singing, so you can't write much about the services in St Mary's.
- I don't think that "The town's link to the railway" reflects what is in w:Eastleigh Works. Commons has photos taken in 2015 at the works, so what remans today? AlasdairW (talk) 22:43, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Here is a table with all of the requirements and guidelines for a star city article:
Requirements | Done? | Guidelines | Done? |
---|---|---|---|
Tourist-style map | Done | Meets all of the criteria in the "Requirements" section | Done |
Listings match the manual of style | Done | Perfect spelling and grammar | Done |
District articles are at least "Guide" status | N/A | Wikivoyage-style map | Not done - but I don't think this is necessary |
Prose near-perfect | Done | Listings in alphabetical order or geographical order | Done - Listings are sorted by town |
Photos | Done | No duplicated listings | Done |
Time and dates formatted correctly | Done | ||
Section introductions | Done | ||
Em dash used for breaks in thought | Done | ||
