Hello, AdamT777! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. New users are also welcome to post any questions or concerns to the arrivals lounge. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. If you want to contribute with information about the place where you live, see Wikivoyage:Welcome, locals.

Thanks for improving the Los Angeles International Airport article! --Ypsilon (talk) 05:15, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

"Get in" edit

I'd like to echo the thanks above! Do keep this in mind, though: We have "Get in" sections. Those sections are exactly that: They're about, for example, where airlines fly from, not to. You don't get in to Juneau by flying out of the airport. Please keep this in mind and always use language about where flights to a destination originate from. In the "Go next" section, you can discuss how to get to other destinations, but nowhere else in a destination article.

Thanks!

Ravn Alaska edit

About this airline: I think it's reasonable to include a notice about its closure for the time being (probably no more than a year) in Alaska#Get around. But what I think should be done in articles for cities that mention that this airline flies there is not to keep the text stating that and then contradict it but to simply delete all mention of this airline. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:28, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Is the airline shut down permanently or only temporarily? If it's permanent, I think I agree with Ikan Kekek. If it's only temporary, I would leave the airline in the relevant city articles and not try to add coronavirus notes everywhere. Readers have to assume that many or most transportation options in the US are disrupted right now, and it's not realistic for us to keep individual city articles up to date about the crisis. —Granger (talk · contribs) 13:45, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Ravn has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and is asking for government aid, so it sounds like they mean to restart. I agree that we should not say that Ravn operates flights and then immediately say that they've all suspended flights. That's confusing.
I also want to thank AdamT777 for the work they are doing to update and expand flight information. This is valuable information for travelers. Keep up the good work! Ground Zero (talk) 18:40, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hey edit

Your contributions here are welcome. But please respect other people here in Wikivoyage. User:Ikan Kekek asked you above to respect that the Get in section to always use language about where flights to a destination originate from. I've been cleaning up after you hoping that you would follow my lead, but I see that you are still writing as if this section is about getting out of the cities.

Do you not understand what we are saying to you? If there is something you don't understand about this, please ask questions. We're happy to help.

It kind of looks like you're just doing your own thing and ignoring other editors. This doesn't go over very well in a collaborative project. I hope this isn't the case. Regards, Ground Zero (talk) 22:38, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Adam, thanks for your reply. I don't want to discourage you from contributing. It's great that you're updating the flight information and adding more information. Just please try to remember that the information in the "Get in" section is about how to get to the city, so for Fairbanks, for example, readers would get in on flights from Canada, or Germany or Chicago. It doesn't make sense to tell readers to get in to Fairbanks on flights to Canada, or Germany or Chicago.
It's not a huge deal, but since you're working a lot a lot of articles, it would be best if you could keep that in mind. Thanks, and again, welcome to Wikivoyage. Ground Zero (talk) 00:52, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Adam, are you going to fix this, or are you going to leave it for someone else to fix? Ground Zero (talk) 10:41, 20 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Overly detailed flight/airport info edit

Hi AdamT777,

Thanks for the updates you've been making regarding airports and airlines, particularly which airlines fly out of which terminals. There's no good way to keep that kind of info updated except manually, so it's great that you're stepping up and doing so.

However, as you seem to be new to Wikivoyage and Wikipedia (at least under this username), I want to point out that there are some differences between the two projects. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and generally welcomes extremely detailed information about the exact airlines (including subsidiary brands), complete lists of destinations, exact gates at an airport, and which airlines use them. Wikivoyage, however, is a traveller's guide, and travellers shouldn't be overloaded with excessive details. At most airports with multiple terminals, for example, a traveller can figure out which terminal they need just by knowing what airline they're flying, or because it may be printed on their ticket; it's uncommon that they need to know which gates are in which terminal, and it's definitely too much detail to point out that there's a gate 18A or that the numbering skips gate 13. Similarly, we don't usually list airlines' subsidiary brands on WV because it's useless information; you can't book flights with them directly, so just saying "American", "Delta", or "United" is sufficient.

I've partially reverted some of the changes you made because of this. I tried to keep the helpful updates (such as lists of airlines) while removing extraneous details.

If you haven't already, you should probably take a look at the project and talk pages for WV:Airport Expedition (talk) and WV:Airport article template (talk).

Again, we're glad to have your help, and I hope you'll keep contributing to make our coverage of the world better.

P.S. You can reply to people here on your own talk page. If you include {{ping|Bigpeteb}} (assuming you're using the source editor) at the start of your message, it will include my username so that I'll get a notification that you were talking to me.

@Bigpeteb: Thank you very much for your very useful information. I’m very familiar with Wikipedia but I am very new to Wikivoyages. As a beginner to editing on Wikipedia/Wikivoyages, I am feeling the pressure of being a ‘newbie,’ and I keep doing things wrong. I do have a lot of free time on my weekends, so I’m feeling the commitment of editing on Wikipedia. AdamT777 (talk) 21:14, 20 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Adam, I hope you don't mind me butting in here. Don't worry too much about making mistakes. It's how we learn. I certainly made mistakes when I came here from Wikipedia. This is a mostly collegial community, so we're just trying to help you learn how things are done here so that your editting can be even better. We're glad you're here, and hope that you enjoy contributing. Ground Zero (talk) 21:38, 20 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yeah. Don't feel bad that we're suggesting corrections. It's OK if it takes you a while to get used to them, and don't let that inhibit you from continuing to add information! Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:25, 20 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

When not to edit edit

Hi there :)

Although we encourage people to edit anywhere in the travel guide, there are two things you shouldn't edit: the wording of other people's comments on talk pages, and the content of other people's userpages (without their permission).

There's usually nothing preventing you from editing these, but it's a matter of etiquette that you resist the urge to do so. There have been many times where I've wanted to edit someone's userpage, but I don't because it would be rude. We respect each other and trust the person who wrote a comment or a userpage bio knew what they were writing and how they wanted it, so we leave it alone.

If you have any questions about this, please let me know in a reply below. All the best, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 08:23, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I’m new. I’ve only been here editing for about a week but thanks for your tips! I’m still getting the swing of things. I understand, so I won’t edit anyone’s talk page or anything like that. Thanks AdamT777 (talk) 17:46, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

No worries, I know you're new. You can edit people's talk pages, that's how you send messages. It's userpages that I'm talking about. For instance, I can edit your talk page, like I'm doing now, but I shouldn't edit your userpage at User:AdamT777, and I shouldn't edit any of your comments either here or on another talk page, only my own. Hope this helps, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 18:40, 24 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, but wrong direction again edit

In Flying to Africa, you write:

"Air Arabia: From Alexandria to Amman, Dammam, Jeddah, Kuwait City, Riyadh, and Sharjah", etc.

You need to write "To Alexandria from Amman, Dammam", etc. Otherwise, we'd have to rename the article "Flying from Africa". Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:15, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Would you like me to change it as I am editing right now? AdamT777 (talk) 05:16, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Yes please, it might get you into the habit! I know it's unnatural to write "from" and not "to", and I still slip up occasionally, but it's for the best because it makes the most sense to readers. It's not a massive issue, and we'd rather have you here editing making mistakes than not editing at all, but if you could just put in a bit of effort to remember "from, from, from", that would help. Cheers, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 07:22, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes indeed, it would be very helpful if you would change it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:31, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Airport articles edit

Thanks for recommending some new airport articles! Just in case you're not familiar with Wikivoyage:What is an article?#Exceptions, take a look, since some airports aren't considered large enough to have articles of their own. I can't say whether that applies to the airport articles you suggested at Wikivoyage:Requested articles, but I thought you might want to know when considering future airport article suggestions that not all airports merit an article on WV. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 23:45, 16 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

To be specific, the policy page I mentioned says the following:
"Some specific guidelines as to when an airport merits its own article:
  • It should serve as a hub with a large number of connecting flights. Travellers are unlikely to spend a lot of time at airports that are merely origin or destination points.
  • It must have several food and shopping options available; if the airport does not have enough amenities to fill out a "Buy" and "Eat and Drink" section then it does not merit its own article."
The guideline that is generally applied is that an airport has to be a "huge" airport like ATL to be eligible for its own article. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 23:48, 16 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
[Edit: I didn't see the section immediately above this one before I posted] I'm unconvinced all the airport articles you're proposing should be started (some of them definitely should be, IMO), but have you looked at Wikivoyage:Airport Expedition? In particular, have a look at Wikivoyage:Airport Expedition#Article criteria and Wikivoyage:Airport Expedition#Future targets. Note:
"If you wish to add another article for creation through this expedition, please discuss it on this page's discussion area first."
Best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:49, 16 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello all, I didn’t know you had a Airport Expedition page. Thank you for taking the time to write to me as I’m a pretty inexperienced editor. I will be a little bit more considerate on what airports I recommend. If there’s an airport you didn’t like I guess you could delete it if you want. AdamT777 23:56, 16 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Don’t worry about it, since it’s all a part of learning to contribute. As IK said, many of these suggestions probably could be articles. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 00:15, 17 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes. And all of them could be discussed at Wikivoyage talk:Airport Expedition. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:13, 17 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Default address info, ref tags edit

Addresses on this site are just street addresses. See Wikivoyage:Listings#Template parameters. We omit the name of the city unless it's not the city covered by the article. And we don't use ref tags. See Wikivoyage:External links. Did you copy this verbatim from a Wikipedia article? If so, please read Wikivoyage:Copyleft. It's imperative to cite Wikipedia articles in an edit summary or on the article's talk page. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:11, 18 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Creating blank pages edit

Hi, Adam. I think you're just about the only constructive user who does this. I don't see a good reason to waste time doing that, though. Talk pages can remain nonexistent until needed.

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:42, 31 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

And it also takes up a lot of lines when people are patrolling recent edits, so that we have to spend time looking past a bunch of things that don't need patrolling because they're completely empty... Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:47, 31 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sherbrooke edit

A small place in Nova Scotia, with few other amenities than a pioneer village, doesn't seem to be the same as the city Sherbrooke in Quebec. Am I totally lost? –LPfi (talk) 12:19, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

I had no idea that Sherbrooke is a city in Quebec and Nova Scotia.
:-)
Such things happen. Surprisingly few place names are unique, so it is wise to always double check the descriptions.

Flying to Africa article edit

Hey,

I saw you were the last user to keep the article Flying to Africa up-to-date. Currently there is a discussion on the article's talk page to delete the article because it's outdated and so not helpful. What is your opinion about it? Would you like to update the article again? 80.187.73.210 01:43, 13 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
