Comment: This one really surprised me. Lovely article about a lovely destination. Needs a bit of polishing up but not much. Would make a great OtBP feature.

Understand is great, See is not particularly useful, Eat and Drink are barely worth reading and at least one of those images should be vfd'ed.   • Support A really interesting and very OtBP destination in a section of the world that hasn't seen any features in quite a while, if I'm not mistaken. A few things: The "Do" and "Drink" sections need more descriptions. Are all of the food specialties specific to Kuching or could some be moved into the regional article? Also, many of the listings are not properly formatted. (To those who keep saying formatting is not required, I'd like to point out that it is listed as a requirement through the statement, "listings/headers/etc. that match our manual of style." Formatting is part of the manual of style, and "listings" are even mentioned directly. Please continue the discussion on the talk page if you have any thoughts on this.) Yeah, was thinking that might come up, what if we temporarily delete (move to the talk page) those empty listings while it's featured? there are plenty of others to go on. Unless the "Do" and "Drink" sections are deemed to be lacking too much, I don't think it needs to be slushed for the formatting. If it were next month's feature, it would be more urgent, but since this is unscheduled, there could very well be 6 months before it is featured.   • Support. It would be very cool to have a Brunei feature, and this one is, I think, certainly up to guide status and thus qualifies for a feature.   • Needs work, Support. While there is some good prose, a lot of work is still needed. A amount of listings in the See, Do, Eat, Drink and Sleep sections need to be listingified. Even if we don't listingify, the Drink section still needs clean-up, and there are a lot of empty listings.   • Looking again, I am a bit concerned that the substance of the article has not been updated for a few years now. From my own experience, I can say that the article is a good accurate reflection of the situation from that period... but the lack of updates bother me for a featured article. Most other Japan pages have addresses. The listings on the Kanazawa page only mimic Wikivoyage's formatting, but they do not actual use it. I suspect that's why the addresses are left out.   • Yep, that is a bit non-standard. The article does though (correctly) use a region template, and cities is a valid sub-section of that. The alternative would be to put those 2 sections under an orientation sub-section of understand.   • Support. The article is up to date, detailed and contains a lot of information, especially (but not only) for the gay traveler. A map of Mykonos island and a map of Mykonos Town would have been nice , though it is doubtful if a map of the maze of tiny streets in Mykonos Town would be very useful. The listing of hotels and restaurants only consists of the better hotels and restaurants, from affordable to expensive, based on personal experiences and reviews at Tripadvisor. The article contains some nice pictures of which three could function as eye-cather for Destination of the Month. Tongren

New Orleans/Lower 9th Ward

Here's what I think would make for a great OtBP district nomination. Our guide is essentially complete, with a map to boot, and most certainly equal or better to any other guide you'll find on the neighborhood. While there certainly is not a ton to do there, there is an enormous interest in the neighborhood among visitors following the much publicized destruction in Hurricane Katrina. The article is also a nice little plug to recommend eschewing the big Grayline tour buses and instead try to get to know the place outside of a giant vehicle. I'll make just a few tiny tweaks, but I think it's ready as is. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 20:26, 2 June 2011 (EDT)

  • Support - Nice article. It'd be useful for the Do section to be broken up into headings so the info on DIY tours of affected sites and the big bus tours area separated. That would be neat, but it's way beyond my ability to talk about specific properties—they do kind of tell you their stories by appearance alone. I pretty much just wandered around, then talked to people at the Chinese place and some random guy near the steamboat houses. Probably nothing you could write down would be more effective than just saying hello to people you meet. I think the bus tours were left out (both by myself and the other people who worked on it—mostly Infrogmation) because they wouldn't pass our tour policy. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:00, 9 June 2011 (EDT)

Nusa Lembongan

We have featured a number of Indonesian articles over the past 2 years but none are currently nominated. This wonderful little island speaks for itself, and the article is a Star. Could be arguments for it being either DotM or OtBP. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 20:58, 2 June 2011 (EDT)

As a star article, I can't imagine a possible objection. I would call it OtBP, along with virtually anything in Indonesia other than Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, and Bali. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:46, 3 June 2011 (EDT)

  • Support. From personal experience in 2010 I know that with a print of this article you can visit Nusa Lembongan without needing another travel guide. The article is up to date, detailed (especially the map) and contains a lot of information that you cannot find in any travel guide. Absolutely delighted to hear that this article was so useful in the real world to a Wikivoyager. I think it could sit happily as DotM or OtBP. It is part of Bali which screams DotM. However, it is one of the less visited Bali destinations which requires independent effort to reach, and is mercifully free of anything resembling cookie-cutter tourism. Hmm, I've changed my opinion, I now think OTBP is better. Bali as a whole is of course hugely popular, but if we look at all the articles within Bali, it is one of the lesser visited places. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 12:39, 20 July 2011 (EDT)

Frankfurt (DotM)

Was slushed in 2009 for bad formatting. I started a full review and added also a small citycenter map. The Eat section is a bit weak but i work on this as i will do some business trips to Frankfurt, soon ;-)

  • Weak Support The article is much better than before, but I would still like to see the "See" section organized by districts of some sort. The Museumsufer, for example, is so much more helpful for a traveler than "Skyline" or "Other museums", which give no indication of location in the city or in relation to other sites. CW: I don't think it would make any sense to districtify Frankfurt. The city is pretty compact and splitting it up would be difficult because that would result in a lot or redundancies. I will try to write in the opening paragraphs of the section some more orientation. Wikipedia has an own article for the museumsufer in English [1] and it is very compact. I don't mean to districtify it into separate articles, I mean give districts as subheadings of "See" (like the Kurashiki article), such as "Musumsufer". Right now, I have no idea whether or not I can walk from one specific site to another. It's much more helpful for a traveler to have sites organized according to location. That way, if I'm at or planning to visit the Goethe Haus und Museum, I can see what else is in the direct vicinity versus what I may have to use public transport to reach. Menzies (OtBP)

An old goldrush town in Western Australia. Lots of history and interesting sights in and around. Best time to visit is Aug-Oct, but anytime of the year is fine as long as you don't mind the heat. I know that featured articles don't have to be stars, but that's what I'm shooting for and I'd like to wait at least until I'm reasonably certain that the quality is up there before featuring it. Don't Support - I know the arguments about attraction v destination have been done to death in the past wrt Disneyworld, and the article does look very, very good even if a lot of the prose reads a bit "corporate" for my taste. However I don't think we should be featuring a commercial attraction as DotM. Fair enough it would be a tiny drop in a huge ocean as far as Disney's publicity is concerned but in my view it's still too much. (WT-en) Tarr3n 05:01, 12 May 2010 (EDT)

That is not a valid reason to oppose a nomination, per the rules: "All objections have to be based on the guidelines above: poor formatting, missing information, etc. Personal opinions, dislikes, etc do not count." Also: "Any destination, region, itinerary or event that passes the 'What is an article?' test is eligible for DotM/OtBP." In other words, if you feel that some topic should never be featured, then we should never have an article on that topic and you should begin a VfD discussion. Or, if we need to, start a discussion to formalise that there is already a ton of other factors about a destination in every nomination that goes beyond formatting and completeness. IMO Wikivoyage having a better guide than is available elsewhere is an excellent reason to nominate, and Wikivoyage only being one of many similar guides in mountains of information and publicity is an excellent reason to de-prioritize, and this doesn't come down to a personal opinion about the article. If we just concern ourselves with completeness and formatting, featured articles becomes just a subset of a starnom. Not commenting on this particular nom, of course, on which I have no opinion. --(WT-en) inas

  • Strong support. This is one of the strongest guides on our site, soon to be a star, and all around a no-brainer choice for a feature. (WT-en) Tarr3n is still contributing but has not started any discussion (that I am aware of) about revising the feature guidelines, and I believe Inas has left the site out of frustration of how it is run. Although I don't personally feel like theme parks are the type of features that Dotm/OtBP is meant for(similar to O'Hare International Airport), without any discussion on talk pages, I also don't think it's fair to hold a nomination in limbo by use of non-response or guideline complaints with no move to change them, so until someone starts a formal discussion, the current non-support is invalid and unfair.

Jeju (OtBP)

OtBP Nom: Well off the beaten path for English-speaking tourists yet a MAJOR tourist destination for Asian travellers (the destination itself easily befitting a DotM on a non-English Wikivoyage). Recently got a pile of UNESCO natural accolades dumped on it. One of the few places in South Korea I'd truly recommend as internationally noteworthy; places like Andong, Gyeongju and Jeonju might be nice but they're a royal pain in the butt to reach for anyone short of a local English-teacher. Jeju however is linked internationally directly by air. Peak season is summer naturally, although that's also "crap, this hotel has no rooms" season, so perhaps an off-peak nomination for any of the other three seasons?(WT-en) Snave 03:37, 19 February 2011 (EST)

    • Pretty much, for now. It's developing rapidly, but I don't think I could call anything outside those Jeju/Seogwipo/Jungmun a "city". Even Jungmun is pushing it given its a hotel agglomeration. Furthermore, only those two have dedicated local bus routes, which was the rationale behind the layout when I was cleaning the page formatting up. Put it this way: The comment someone put up about Seongsan Town's most notable feature apart from the obvious UNESCO-listed site being its disproportionate number of marts is pretty (amusingly) apt from what I saw. And that's one of the larger towns outside of Jeju and Seogwipo/Jungmun. The islands mostly little rural hamlets and homogenously placed weird theme tourist attractions. From what I saw, Jeju city itself was a pretty generic Korean city, a tightly packed agglomeration of housing, seafood restaurants, hotels, English schools and doughnut shops that you can walk to the edge of, turn around and quite literally see a line where the buildings stop: mostly an admin centre, only notable by its placement on the island. You are right though, the linked city pages are lacking, and if getting those up is essential for the main page then perhaps we could contact the Jeju Life magazine mentioned and ask them to put a call out. If there's a chance to get the island featured maybe they'll try and get a tonne of restaurant/bar listings up on the two city pages.(WT-en) Snave 04:04, 23 February 2011 (EST)

A wonderful city in the "less-well-known" part of Florida. I was surprised to see this wonderful guide article has not been nominated before. Best time to visit/feature the city is October-November or March-April when temperatures are pleasant. It's a shame we didn't feature this before the oil spill, but October is far enough in the future for it to be cleaned up and the beach is only one of the several attractions in the city. The way I imagine OtBP is featuring little-known places that WT browsers would want to travel from far away to visit. While Franklin seems like a nice place to stop by if I were traveling through, there's nothing spectacular about the town that I feel warrants it any special recognition. It has a church (as if there aren't hundreds of historic churches in the Northeast/Midwest), a couple small museums (none noteworthy), and a racetrack (again, not a noteworthy one). Everything else in see & do sections can be found in most small towns...park, ice rink, theater, bowling alleys. Plus, almost every small town in the Northeast/Midwest hosts some kind of fall festival. So, in my opinion, it's just another non-noteworthy small town. Use this for OtBP as a last resort only. I have wondered the same about some destinations, but we have featured Spring Green (there is less to do there than in Franklin, and I don't imagine international tourists wanting to plan a trip there. It looks like a place of interest to domestic tourists that have never heard of it before). The cities of Sligo and Saint Martins Island also seem to have nothing really to do or see, but they were featured. Is this article somehow worse than those? I guess I was under the impression that all cities that can sustain an article would be able to become DotM or OtBP once the article was up to standard. I think some OtBPs are the "hidden gems"-type of destinations and other cities may be more "if you're in the area, you may want to check out this city"-type of destinations. I can't agree with those comparisons, since they all have pretty clear angles. Spring Green is utterly bizarre, and a real top destination for American architecture fans—worth making the 3 hour trek from Chicago; Sligo is one of our nine Irish cities, and the principal population center in the northwest of Ireland, through which anyone in the area will likely pass; and St Martins Island is a tropical paradise, and one of our only 5 ODs for Bangladesh. These aren't simply useful articles, they're things that pique interest in trips (and in using our guides on those trips). The one tiny PA town that would fit that angle that I can think of would be the ever ridiculous Punxsutawney (if it were a good article).
The Franklin guide looks like a great one for anyone passing through the area, but is there a reason why people would seek it out? Per our criteria, personal affection for the destination isn't a valid reason to oppose a nomination, but I'd still like to remind of the consideration that the DotM/OtBP's sole purpose here is to get people interested in the site. It would at least be nice if the article had an understand section highlighting what makes the town really unique/important and worth seeking out. IMO, though, this is the kind of article I'd rather see pushed to star status (since it would be a nice example of how to properly do a small US town) than featured as a dotm.

But even from as close as Pennsylvania, I can't imagine anyone planning a trip just to visit Spring Green. It just wouldn't seem worth it unless you were also going somewhere else. I agree that Spring Green looks interesting, but a three hour trip from Chicago is still a nice day trip. People make similar trips to Franklin from Buffalo. I would be surprised if people from Europe, Asia, etc. planned special trips just to go to either Spring Green or Franklin. That's why I think it's like Franklin, not because it's "boring". I thought it was a "cute" feature.
At any rate, to answer your question about "Why should someone visit Franklin?", people typically visit Franklin to view all of the Victorian architecture, get away from the city/see some nature, and to see the church (although AHaneen considers it to be like any other "historic" church, I think it's more liked than many American historic churches, because the windows are the focus rather than the history. Of course, those who don't like Tiffany will likely not be impressed). I don't know if that makes it sound any better... Franklin is part of the Oil Region (where oil was first discovered/drilled in North America and the Standard Oil Company was founded), so a visit to Franklin usually entails a visit to Titusville and maybe Oil City or Pithole. Probably if this were being featured with Titusville or as Venango County, its value and interest to travelers would be more evident.
I will work on adding some sort of "Understand" information, as there is actually no mention of the Victorian houses, and only small allusions are made to the oil history, which are both important. The organised tour started in Senggigi, Lombok stopped two nights at Gili T, then onwards to Nusa Lemboggan for some snorkeling and finished in Sanur, Bali. I had a quick look and the two biggest german speaking travel companies now offer for all package tourists this option. Strictly speaking I guess Gili T (especially) is no longer OtBT. And even within Indonesia you could make an argument for many places better deserving of this tag. I think it is preferred to keep the DotM/OtBP diverse. Although there may be instances when the same country occupied both features, I'd rather avoid that. It makes the features less exciting when one nation dominates, and it doesn't showcase the full scope of Wikivoyage. How about instead of featuring this with Bali we switch it with Tobacco Caye? I also read Select and think that with the partial lift of the EU ban on indonesian airlines the no. of package tourists will significantly increase and in 2010 no one will argue anymore that it is OtBP. I think we should keep Hyderabad as proposed in January 2010 as it is the best time for a visit but Christchurch could be an alternative to the Asian overweights in the list. May or June is good scheduling for the Gilis: good weather but before the islands become over-run in July and August. The months to avoid are December to February when rains can be fairly extreme and the islands flood (wading through one metre of floodwater on Gili T is not much fun!). Those few improvements aside, the article is very nice and I think it is a good choice to feature as DotM. As far as timing goes, would summer be best? Rochester (New York)(DotM)

I've finally gotten around to listifying and reorganizing everything in this article, and just tonight finished the overview map and added four new images to the article. I think it's more-or-less ready for consideration for Destination of the Month.

I should point out that while I wrote much of the prose currently in the article, a fair bit of it also came from User:(WT-en) Nicksand, many many moons ago. Considering the age of the text, I think he might be surprised to see how much of it survives in the current draft. Kudos to him and User:(WT-en) Savogt1, also, for writing about the bars and clubs, because I've never been to any of them myself.

I'm most interested in your thoughts on the tone of the article, and secondarily the style. I still am not sure I have an intuitive grasp of the house tone and so would greatly appreciate any thoughts and impressions on that topic. The article's content is extensive but could hardly be said to be complete; I'll be working on adding some of the glaring omissions in dribs and drabs but I don't think that should keep it from being featured.

A couple more things: I think the hotel listings should be formatted properly. Also, I think the part about winter clothing in Stay Safe could be clarified a little (or just tie together the prose a little better). It reads oddly to me to have the extreme cold followed up with the fact that you may not need a coat in the "winter sunshine". Lastly, I think the Panda Falls picture could be cut and the Pearl Waterfall image put in its place, along with either the Five Flower Lake or the Arrow Bamboo Lake. Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park (OtBP)

I have wanted to get one of the Indonesian park articles to a state where it could be nominated for some weeks now and here it is. It is not the longest of articles but it provides a good, accurate guide to the park. And you get to look at one of Mr Patokallio's finest which is used as the lead image.

A bit of history for this article. When I first had a look at the East Java region articles, there was one each for Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru and another one for the national park. Clearly that did not make too much sense so all 3 were combined into one. You could make arguments for this being DoTM or OtBP. It is not that well known a destination internationally but is very much on the domestic Indonesian tour package circuit. Hence I am fairly ambivalent as to which category is more appropriate. Sakhalin OtBP

This one is dear to me, my first feeble edits on Wikivoyage was to the Korsakov guide, while sitting at the post office desperately trying to figure out where the hell I could by tickets for the ferry to Japan, information which it turned out was impossible to find anywhere both off and online. After a nice Russian grandpa type (who didn't speak any English) working in the harbour spend half a day helping me to find the small hidden-away office selling tickets, I got involved in Wikivoyage, hoping to save other adventurers the same trouble. After that experience I'm quite confident that our information Sakhalin is unrivalled anywhere on the internet! (at least in English), it's certainly leaps and bounds ahead of my Lonely Planet guide.

You may find some sections of the Okha and Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky guides deceptively empty, but trust me, it has taken many hours of work, ploughing through books and Russian websites just to get the sections filled up with what's there now - I think the hotel in Alexandrovsk alone took 4-5 hours just to find an address and phone number. Many of the pictures are results of personal requests to get them released under the CC licence, I'm especially happy about the reindeer picture, Thanks Aleut!. The Literature section on the main article are waiting for Mr Fitzgerald to finish reading up on Anton Chekov, but it's easily fixed, or the section can always be removed before a feature. The reason I'm suggesting it now, is I want to swap it in for April or May, when the mountains go light green over the dark volcanic rocks - it looks amazing!

The information on the web about Sakhalin is indeed scarce, so the articles look fairly complete. If you feel that it is worth to do more search through Russian websites, I can try this. It will also be a pleasure for me to do the translatations for Russian version of Wikivoyage. It's tricky. You should scan through numerous travel reports (mainly from backpackers), and you have to know where to find them. OK, I will try, and let's see what comes out. At first glance, I can see that you missed one important thing about the ferry: it is strongly subject to weather conditions, especially in winter time. Once or twice a year these ferries just stop for a week (it is a disaster, because cars and goods get jammed in Vanino). I will start to translate the articles and will try to add things on-the-fly. I have 3 requests out for permission to use some images for Okha under CC, but no replies so far, and it's months since I send them emails. There are also many good pictures on Panoramio, but the one request I made have gotten no response either (probably doesn't speak any English). There are no usable CC licensed ones available at all (at least that I can find).

Ravello (OtBP)

A little jewel on the Amalfi coast apparently, someone put a lot of work and love into this - unlike most of our other Italian destinations outside salvaged Rome. Guess we could have the whole DoTM OtBP path discussion again, but even though it's a relatively popular destination (in the hugely popular amalfi coast) but it's only home of 2,500 people. I really don't care either way, as long as it's featured - so be my guest to move it up there.

Washington, D.C. (DotM)

It's one of the world's top tourist destinations, the U.S. capital, my hometown, with a collection 3 star articles and 9 guides, something like 25 maps marking every last listing in the guide, and we've even managed to get the breadcrumbs to display! I've gone through the (rather stiff) travel guide competition at the bookstores downtown, and I think our guide is competitive with the best of them. I'm still polishing it before future star nominations (getting better photos, proofing, weeding out some of the stranger rubbish I've written, etc.), but I think it's certainly ready for a DotM feature. The only bad time of the year to visit is summer, but that's also peak season, so I'd consider it fine to feature any time of year. For reasons that still baffles me, someone decided to spend a great deal of time whipping up an amazing guide for this nice arctic city, but then flat out refused to include any sort of practical information like addresses or phone numbers in the listings. It's been bugging me for quite some time, so I've tried my best to remedy the situation, include all the missing practical information and bring it more in line with the MOS. Medellín (DotM)

Quite surprised that this hasn't been nominated before. Addresses & phone numbers are listed for all restaurants and hotels. There's a good "learn" section. The "talk" section has a couple interesting notes. The "get out" section isn't lacking. The only problems I can see are that the "If you only have a day" feels out of place (it's nice, but shouldn't it be elsewhere in the article?) and there is a "$" price scheme to the "eat" and "sleep" sections, but no guide to what $, $$, $$$, etc. represent. It also could use 2-3 more pictures (although there are already many good ones there), especially a cityscape pic. This would be a good choice for February DoTM as it is non-US/European and Feb. is the second driest month and quite temperate for all those Wikivoyage browsers stuck in N.Hemisphere winter.

Maybe I think the listings should be formatted properly first. I am also not sure about the lack of "See" and "Do" options. OK, some points here. I did a thorough update making sure everything outside the eat section is properly formatted, and in the same process I read up up quite extensively on the city to find addresses etc., and I'm pretty sure the see and do sections are near complete (LP, Tripadvisor, IgoUgo for example don't have any more than we have, and wikipedia barely has an article. As for the restaurant listings; I think they are awesome, and I think disqualifying a guide on this basis is a slippery slope, it's not a star nomination. It's the debate about well formatted text versus the listings template again :) A small point, but it would be good if the prices were all formatted as per WT style guidelines (i.e with a comma for the thousands and the currency symbol before the amount). Also, is the currently-used "F" an acceptable abbreviation of the West African Franc? Or should it be Fr? I guess I should clarify what I meant by proper "formatting". I don't mean that it needs to be star status and have information in each space. What I mean is that in this case, the "Eat" listings should be listed as the (eat name=, Etc.) format (which they are not). I think you did some work on this already. I am not really referring to the content as much as the presentation, although the content is also much easier to critique if it is in the proper format. It's not a requirement, but I think that it should be. It doesn't require any knowledge or research about a location to do; it just requires time. I don't think that's such a slippery slope. I Think this was never agreed on, as it's highly subjective, but I do think capitals can be OtBP, have you ever heard of Palikir, Lomé or Castries before? Though it's not something I'm particularly adamant about. The whole country of Niger have 60.000 tourist arrivals per year compared to 55.000 on previously OtBP Svalbard and 60.000 on the Falkland islands from cruise ships alone, though that was not techically OtBP. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 21:05, 13 October 2009 (EDT)
I DO have the Bradt guide! It's great (22 pages of info/maps for Niamey) and hopefully a lot of the hotels/restaurants listed are still open. Unfortunately, the security situation has changed a lot since the guide was written (for almost everywhere besides the southwest)...such a shame because places like Agadez and Air/Tenere are now very unsafe/impossible(legally) to reach yet they seem far more intriguing than Niamey. I'm quite busy, but I'll certainly try to find some time over the next few weeks to fill in some good Niamey info. I agree with Sertman that this should be an OtBP. The few things I've got left are: expanding "History", add local operators under "Tourism Information", add "By boat" & "By car" and cleanup the "By bus" sections in Get in, "Respect" & "Stay safe" maybe need a rewrite, add money exchange under "Cope", add to "Get out", & add lots of pictures. With a little more work, we can truly bring this to guide status. A few good sources for you to help contribute are: Niger Ministry of Tourism website en Francais, InfosNiger.com also in French, The Bradt Guide to Nigeria on Google Books page 93, & Nigerien Embassy in Canada click "Travel & Tourism". One other thing is timing. I see it has been moved to January. December & January have the best (coolest) weather, while February-May are quite hot (around 40 degrees). Copenhagen (DOTM)

I know there are some gaps in the coverage, and the main article sort of needs a makeover, but seeing Vientiane has been smacked up for December, I thought I'd give a shout and propose Copenhagen for that month instead. In itself Copenhagen is actually a good place to visit during Christmas, with loads going on, even though the weather can be tricky.

And this year, the worlds eyes are going to be tuned towards my little city, with all the worlds leaders gathered here, for the renegotiation of the Kyoto treaty - basically going to be the Copenhagen Treaty I suppose[2]. More than 10.000 NGO's, as well as swarms of journalists and other people who are likely to use wikivoyage as a medium are coming to town, So I'd really like to see wonderful Copenhagen smacked up on our front page during that month. And don't worry, even though progress is rather slow, I'm going to fill in the blanks, don't want my little jewel in the making looking like that, when the world is watching :)

It's too bad this one didn't have a good collaboration of the month however, I think it is nearly ready. The uneven coverage should be addressed before it is featured. From what I could see, Vestegnen needs descriptions under Drink and Sleep sections and the "district under construction" label has to go. Fredriksberg needs information in the "contact" section, since it's currently empty, and the hotel listings should be formatted properly with more descriptions. As something that I think should be addressed but is not so crucial to the DotM, the northern suburbs' shops should have descriptions and the "Paddling Down the Mollea River" box is too long. It would be proper to fill out the history and literature sections of the main article first, but that's a very minor and easy thing to change. I've noticed that a DotM/OtBP main page feature sends google results for that article through the roof. Accordingly, with Copenhagen big in the news, we could get a lot of new traffic by featuring it in December. Moreover, Christmas in candle-happy Copenhagen would make for a lovely visit. Kilkenny (OtBP)

This article is very good and gives a good insight into the Medieval Capital of Ireland. Its small nature, I feel, qualifies it for Off the BEaten Track. As a resident of Kilkenny, I feel that it deserves the opportunity to be on this list.

The article contains many nice photos and detailed descriptions of Hotels and ways of getting in and, of course, things to to.

It is a guide article.

Birmingham (DotM)

Not a huge tourism destination (which is why it seems ok to go without districts), but one of England's biggest cities, and a major business hub. The article looks borderline perfect and the maps are jaw-dropping. Weather on this island is always rainy and a little chilly, and the main draws are nightlife, shopping, and proximity to nearby destinations, so it doesn't really matter when we feature it. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 01:23, 19 August 2008 (EDT)

Spring Green (OtBP)

Has a couple of very interesting attractions and some small-town, away-from-the-interstate charm. Might be too small to be featured, but it's a nice weekend trip. Could work for December (there are Christmas festivities in town, and the House on the Rock supposedly goes all out for Christmas), otherwise a warm weather month. Not yet - I don't know if being too small is a problem - we've had Berneray as OtBP and that article covers 10 sq km and has just 128 residents. However there are a few problems - we need a few more things to do listed either in See/Do or the Get Out section, a bit more info in the get in section (e.g. nearest airport) and some more info about the town as a whole. I also like to read about places before I visit, so some general pre-visit info and history about the town would be nice. Also there needs to be more details about the hiking trails and canoe trips. The Taliesin Estate closes at the end of October, and the American Playhouse ends its season on October 18. OtBPs are changed on the 15th. So if this article were pushed back a month, two of the three major attractions would be closed for half the time the article was being featured (until November 15). Colorado's Wine Country (OtBP)

Written single-handedly by User:(WT-en) WineCountryInn, presumably of [4], but this is almost a textbook example of how to sell yourself correctly on Wikivoyage. It's a little hype-y and some of the purplest prose ("adult adventure of the senses"?!) needs trimming, but hey, this is an itinerary for wine lovers and it's OK to be enthusiastic. The article is excellent so far, but at least a few of the vineyards should have descriptions highlighting what makes them notable or exceptional, preferably with more contact info than the website. I'm nominating it as a dotm, because it is one of the main stops on the very popular Golden Ring circuit in Russia. We discussed on the Russian version whether Bogolyubovo should get its own article and decided pro. So Alexander will probably take care of that on the English version as well long before this would be featured. Foreign English-speaking tourists? What's "on the beaten path" for a Russian or Eastern European may not be for the majority of users of the English-language version of Wikivoyage. (And vice versa; I've had some misgivings about some things we've called DotMs on the grounds that, if you're not a resident of an English-speaking country, they're quite definitely off the beaten path.) Well, like I said, I think it could go either way. But the path here is very well-beaten, and I don't mean in terms of domestic tourism—endless boatloads and busloads of foreign tourists come here, as the Golden Ring circuit (at least parts of it) is included in virtually all "tour Russia packages" for Westerners. Of the sizable cities on the route, I believe that Vladimir is the most visited, since it's easy to combine it with a visit to ever popular Suzdal. Personally, I'd want to avoid coming here during the summer months—in addition to the humidity, I'd worry that my "Russian" experience would turn into a joust for camera space with some hungover Finns, a group of loud Italian women, and a septuagenarian couple from the Detroit suburbs. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:07, 25 February 2009 (EST)
That's interesting, When I was in Suzdal in May, which I suppose is the top attraction, we basically had the place to ourselves - well everything was booked up, but it was all Russians. You know Russia better than me, but judging from the tourist facilities in Vladimir, I'd personally be surprised if I bumped into anyone from States. I'm not sure if the template is correct, as it started with a city template and I tried to turn it into an itinerary. As a disclaimer, I was the one to put the "guide" label on the article...but it as come a long way from the outline it started as. It has a few possible MoS violations which I feel can be justified. Please read this list and their justifications on Talk:Dalton Highway before posting your comment here. Boracay (DotM)

The Philippines is comprise of 7,100 and more islands yet none of these had been nominated at least once since 2004 compared to other countries in Southeast Asia (maybe due to lack of promotion or perhaps unnoticed). This country has lots to offer: one of them is the white-sand beach Boracay. I nominate the destination (not because it is one of the few good travel guides here for the Philippines) to be featured on April 2008 because the country is on its hottest summer on that month and is ideal for beach-lovers. Did a superquick openstreetmap.org import of Boracay (Image:Boracay.svg) which had surprisingly good coverage, if you want to work with this - I'm sick of maps at the moment after doing a great deal of work on Copenhagen map imports. We've got <1 month until the next DotM change. Boracay has been nominated for the next DotM. Is it or is it not ready? If not, what will we do for March? One thing I might note is that we'd have 2 tropical islands in the Pacific featured for the first half of the month (along with Wake Island as OtBP, which in turn replaces an article for a tropical island). If there is any other article that could work for March, I think this should get bumped a month or two. Uluru isn't bad (although nominated for OtBP, but see discussion below). Oh my lordy lordy, have any of you read the get in section? ...the atoll is no longer generally open to visitors. The airstrip remains available as an emergency landing site for trans-Pacific flights; if you don't have official business there, that's perhaps the most likely circumstance in which you'll visit the place. In non-emergency situations, a "Prior Permission Request" must be filed to use the airstrip (and will probably be denied). So, we're featuring a place that you can't go to unless your plane gets a bird in both engines mid-flight and needs to make an emergency landing? That's all we can come up with for Feb??? Am I missing something else? Or does the section need an update? How about #Tobacco Caye instead? The obvious "get out" destination is Angkor, and that's a previous DotM in its own right. Jakar (OtBP)

A small village in the mountains of Bhutan. Accessible by road - one full day from the capital Thimphu and two days from the border. There are no addresses in Bhutan, so hotels are just listed by name. Jakar is a summer only destination, and is being offered as an alternative to Windsor (Ontario) as there has been some reservations about featuring this border town. There aren't any real restaurants or cafes except for those in the hotels. It is a very small village with just one main street. In addition, tours to Bhutan can only be booked through a travel agency, and so guests have no/little say in which hotel they will stay. For them, accommodation is just in an international standard hotel. The important thing for Bhutan is info on attractions. Anyway, I am just pointing out the differences in defining articles for Bhutan than other countries, but agree that the current lack of info about hotels and restaurants/cafes may not look good on an article being show cased on the front page. I'll give it some thought... Anyway, we still need to think of an alternative for Windsor if that is the way consensus flows. Good article. It provides a detail information of the city. Bandung is famous for its beautiful scenery with mountains surrounding the city, nice foods and the cool weather throughout the year. Mesa Verde National Park (OtBP)

This is a very interesting locale, located quite far away from any major city. The Ancestral Puebloan ruins are very well-preserved.

Two, and something to consider broadly when nominating United States National Parks, I'm not sure it's even possible to do an article on this park in wiki form that approaches the content of more traditional guidebooks, etc. Is it really one of our "best" articles in terms of showing why Wikivoyage is an improvement on commercial products? All times of the year are excellent in Chicago but the summer is most active with many festivals and activities around the city. Best for August or September 2007. For the whole city, I'd suggest June to coincide with decent weather and Blues Fest, or Jazz Fest at the end of August/beginning of September (with much less decent weather). Chicago/Bronzeville would be a great OtBP for February, since that's Black History Month in the United States. The weather is usually bad in February, though. This is a great smaller city to explore in Azerbaijan. It has few international tourist every year, but the historical sites from lost civilizations (Caucus Albanians), ancient fortresses, unique food, and friendly atmosphere this is a place that should be visited by more. I have lived here for one year, and it is a pity to see so many ex pats living in Baku, Ganja, and Tbilisi but so few visiting this great place. The Greater Caucus mountains are beautiful no matter if they are covered by snow or by verdant grass and trees. I have been active in writing this part of the guide, and I will continue, but it would be even better to have more contributions and visits. Finally, although Sheki is beautiful all year long, it is best enjoyed from late March to June, when the weather is near perfect every day.(WT-en) Cupcakecommander 09:18, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

Here's the down load on climate: The hot season is from early March to end of May. Average daytime temperature is 30° Celsius (85° Fahrenheit). The rainy season usually begins early June and reaches to the end of October. Most rain will probably fall in September. So, if Guangzhou is featured in March (see discussion under 'Dubai' above), then feasibly Chiang Mai could be slotted into April in its place. While it is not the best month in terms of temperature (though 30° Celsius day time temps are certainly not unbearable), it is dry, which is probably the most important consideration. Why not bump up Guangzhou? The article actually says that finding accommodation during the yearly trade fair in April can be difficult, so March would seem better. Yahoo Weather says average March temps are 22/15°C hi/lo with 9cm of rain, which sounds pretty pleasant in my (tropical) book. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:09, 3 February 2007 (EST)
Yeah, that's certainly a possibility and, as you say, the weather there in March is pretty good. Another option is to slip Dubai in as the next CoW to see whether a group effort can bring it up to standard before the end of this month. Either way is fine with me.   • Oppose. Just glancing at the article, parts of it seems to read like an advertisement. Such as "It is a city of superlatives: for the fastest, biggest, tallest, largest and highest, Dubai is the destination." And then a lot of the See/Do listings feel empty and incomplete. I dunno, I understand there's a lack of articles for winter, but I think we should put this one off for a couple of years, to get the article ready for when the Burj Dubai and all those other crazy developments are near completion. :) (WT-en) PerryPlanet 20:59, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
    • That sentence has a very valid point, although it may not come through very well -- practically everything built in Dubai is intended to be the world's tallest tower, the world's most luxurious hotel, the world's largest ski dome, the world's first underwater hotel, yadda yadda.   • Support – I just cleaned this up more and added several new pictures, and added a map a couple weeks back as well. Having spent a month there, I'd say this article is very much near-complete... the only thing I can think of adding is a drop-dead gorgeous sunset picture at Radhanagar Beach... no offense to the already decent one we've got by Ravikiran, I've seen some nicer sunsets there, and some knockout pics, just not that meet our license requirements, yet. Most place on the island don't have telephones, which is why there aren't any listed... and the same for addresses, there's just 2 roads on island and no street addresses, so the only way to list them is by saying which beach they're at... believe it or not, this article is pretty darn complete. It covers almost all of the possible things to do and the main places to stay. The only drinking options are to buy beer at the beer shop near the port (that's already listed) or from a few of the guesthouse restaurants (also mentioned), so there's no way to expand that. PCO/ISD's are the phone booths around India... PCO for local, ISD for international, they're all over India and explained in the main guide, and I just added a little clarifying note on the Havelock page too – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 04:08, 26 May 2007 (EDT)

Remember, though, that a "January" OtBP is displayed for as much of February as January, because of our mid-month OtBP change date.
